FOX 9 KMSP: PJ Fleck to Minnesota - six years $21 million
Two sources close to the situation say that Fleck has tentatively agreed to a deal tonight that will be in the neighborhood of six years and will pay him $21 million. Another source says a press conference announcing the decision is expected to be held Friday afternoon at TCF Bank Stadium.

HUGE is predictably modest.
I was the lone voice of reason. https://t.co/jSZCZ1bOpf

Except the 24/7 Minnesota message board, which was saying the same stuff as Huge...

His voice is so annoying.

I can't stand Huge. He behaves like a certain incoming president on twitter...

Why is he so bombast about this? It's a MAC coach taking a middle of the pack Big 10 job. Interesting story but he's acting like he's breaking a global news story or something.
January 6th, 2017 at 9:52 AM ^
Was there a single person watching this story develop that didn't immediately think "well I guess that might be where Fleck is headed"?

Thanks for stating the obvious, HUGE blowhard.
January 6th, 2017 at 12:02 PM ^
I could screen cap it if I cared enough, but even I...a random message board poster said before the bowl game that Claeys would be fired and they were going to break the bank to go afer Fleck.
Who gives a shit if you called this? It wasn't even that hard to see...I'd just heard it directly from a friend in-the-know who works in athletics at Minnesota, said it was a done deal 100%.
This is no surprise to anyone and he didn't call anything. It was always planned to happen this way.

since they now have a better chance to win a game in 2017.
He's likely looking over WMU's commit list hoping to snag some of their top recruits only to get a sad when they stay at WMU or flip to Minnesota.

Western Michigan beat more B1G teams this year than Dantonio. I'm just sayin'.

My favorite winter experiences are mostly all in Minneapolis:
1) During several 12 inch snowfalls, driving through downtown Minneapolis after 11pm, sliding around corners across three lanes of non-traffic.
2) Broomball on outdoor rinks that actually freeze.
3) Watching skijouring (dogs pulling skiers) and mountain bikers on ice at the Luminary Loppet.
4) Running Lake Calhoun on actual plowed paths (as long as it was above 15 degrees). Watching the winter kite boarding on the ice.
5) Um, in general, Minnesota is much easier driving in the winter since it stays below freezing. None of that 32 degree sheet of ice like Michigan.
Anyway, summers are amazing Minneapolis. Any friend I have taken to both Minneapolis and my hometown Kalamazoo generally prefer Minneapolis and it's not even close. I get that Kalamazoo is smaller, but spend 5 years in Minneapolis and you'll see what I mean.
I love Michigan (and Western Michigan). I do not feel bad for Fleck for the lifestyle he will inherit at Minnesota though.

Going to Minneapolis tonight for a wedding celebration thing (a Michigan Man). They had a ton of wintery outdoor things planned but canceled most of them because its just too cold. And they said it hasn't even snowed. Sounds nuts - when the Minnesota people say its too cold, its gotta be cold. Should be an interesting weekend.
January 6th, 2017 at 7:13 AM ^
Save the winter... which is about 5 months long.
Joking aside, the fiancee and I enjoyed Minnesota well enough when we were there. Too cold, though, and the drivers are absolute idiots. I honestly don't know how they manage not to kill themselves off in droves over the winter.

Minneapolis is a wonderful city. What don't you like about it? It's not that much colder or snowier than Ann Arbor.
January 5th, 2017 at 11:19 PM ^
Oh, it's colder all right. Right now in A2 it's 11 degrees. In Minneapolis it's -7.
Agree that it's a nice city though.
January 5th, 2017 at 11:29 PM ^
Our low in Duluth tonight is -15. Ann Arbor is both someone south and also covered by a bit of a shield in that Lake Michigan tends to warm the lower peninsula's temps a bit more than areas to its west. Minnesota has solid ground cover, where Ann Arbor does not.
But the Cities are a lovely place with lots to do. I'm impressed every time I spend time there.

Summers are 83 degree average, same as Ann Arbor, but 30 min more sunlight each day.
Honestly, it gets a bad rap for the winters. They are nothing like 20 years ago. I worked a little in agriculture there and all of the climate bands have moved north dramatically so that crops that used to only grow in Iowa now grow in mid-Minnesota.
Once I was in Minneapolis and it was 103 degrees, the hottest city in the nation that day (yes an anomaly, but it can get above 90 degrees often).
January 6th, 2017 at 2:01 AM ^
30 min less sunlight in the winter. Trade-offs. Dark by 4:00pm is depressing...

You may have missed it but the University of Michigan moved out of Detroit a little while ago (in 1837).
But anyway, Detroit is looking better these days, at least parts of it (certainly the downtown/riverfront and midtown areas).
January 6th, 2017 at 7:16 AM ^
Isn't colder than AA? Which Minneapolis are you talking about, because I know from personal experience that you're not talking about Minneapolis, MN.
Temps in winter regularly hover between 10 above and 10 below for weeks at a time.

Well, we do have the longest shoreline of any state in the Lower 48, and no place in this state is more than six miles from a lake. And we have U-M.
I get what you're saying - it's dumb to mock other states. But the whole OMG THE STATE OF MICHIGAN SUX HOW CAN U STILL LIVE THERE thing is annoying, too.

we don't know if the guy who made the snarky comment about Minnesota is a citizen of Michigan, do we? Everyone else has been saying Minneapolis is nice. (Although colder than Ann Arbor) At least that is what I read.

thank you. but i am now a MI resident again.
perhaps relocating from FL to MI in the winter brought on the sarcasm?

I appreciate this post as I've always been a little rattled by the disdain for any location outside of Michigan that many posters have exhibited during the time I've followed this blog. Having lived in Michigan, Illinois, Virginia, Tennessee, and now Kentucky (I can sense the oncoming collective gasp while typing), I don't quite understand the negative sentiments toward other states. Every state has its positives and negatives. I've read countless posts offering scathing critiques of various states, especially southern states. While Tennessee and Kentucky may not be the deep South that those posters are referring to, I have had nothing but positive experiences with the people and culture of these states. Even though it's not my original home, singing "My Old Kentucky Home" definitely does not make my residence feel inferior. Go Blue and when they're good, Go Big Blue!

If you're around southerners you hear plenty of complaints about the heat and humidity. They're probably not coming on this blog to tell you about it though. Sure, southern schools say how cold it is in Michigan. It's called recruiting. Just like posters say how terribly racist it is in the South and that a recruit will just be living in antebellum slavery if they go to an SEC school.
I'm in western Kentucky and it's 17* and snowing here...

Minny is a really cool city. Growing beer scene, a lot of parks (with a huge dog park), awesome amateur hockey scene, some really great resturants.

I have nothing against Minnesota, but if you are resting your defense of the state on dog parks and amateur hockey, then I'm not sold...

Great hire for Minny with plenty of upside potenital and a better face to lead the program than Claeys. Gophers will finally have a sports complex in '18 so I'm sure Fleck will be able to recruit on par with anyone in theB1G West. Fleck was smart to leave with his QB and Corey Davis graduating
