Harbaugh Now Highest Paid Coach in CFB
Harbaugh's salary has increased to $9 million. He is now making more than $2 million more than Nick Saban.
Who's got more money than us?!?
Some other notable coaches salaries and where they rank:
3) Urban Meyer - $6,094,800
6) Charlie Strong (for now?) - $5,200,130
10) Kirk Ferentz (lolz, Iowa!) - $4,500,000
14) Mike D'antoni - $4,300,000
The top 25 are in the link below!
Edit: Just a reference, the 2 highest paid coaches in the NFL (Pete Carroll and Sean Payton) are making $8 million per year...
And as pointed out below, this includes the huge life insurance premium of $4 million, so it is skewed. Either way, he has earned all of it!

Worth. Every. Penny.

And more.
He is underpaid.

that showed how much more revenue we have coming in with Harbaugh in place. Numbers show that he is earning his pay.
October 26th, 2016 at 12:49 PM ^
by the end of the season that's only going to be about $600k per win
not a bad ratio...

Suck it Pete Carroll!

Still in play...

There's no way he will leave millions on the table from the NFL to return to Michigan, they said...
There's so much more money in the NFL, they said...

Actually Oakland is on a roll at 5-2 with a reasonable chance to go 6-2 if they can beat Tampa next.
I'd say that Oakland is not in the market for a new coach and decidedly not in play.

Worth every penny

It's an interest free loan that is, if I'm reading correctly, to be paid back by the proceeds of a life insurance policy.
In other words, they gave him $2mm this year and will give another $2mm next year. He won't pay interest, and the loan will be repaid when he dies.
October 26th, 2016 at 2:18 PM ^
So it goes into the books as a loan, but it's effectively salary because he doesn't have to pay it back in his lifetime. Am I understanding that correctly?
In any case, this strikes me as an unorthodox arrangement. Are there any MGoAccountants or MGoTaxLawyers who can explain why his compensation package might be structured this way?
October 26th, 2016 at 7:42 PM ^
It's a not-entirely-uncommon form of deferred compensation.
The loan proceeds are used to purchase/fund whole life insurance as part of estate planning.
October 26th, 2016 at 11:41 AM ^
That's probably where it gets tricky. I would assume this includes total pay, ie his huge life insurance policy, etc. But I'm not sure.

That definitely skews the numbers, but he's worth every damn dollar.
October 26th, 2016 at 11:46 AM ^
Wow, I forgot his premiums were that much so yeah they definitely skews it.
But yes, he's made the university back that much and so much more!

I believe there was a one-time funding of an insurance/pension program that was set up. Still a lot of dough and as everyone agrees, totally worth it.

I love these posts.
Time to hear it from the stodgy Detroit old-timers who start second guessing because of the money involved.
"Well is he *really* 22% better than Saban??"
These are always fun.
October 26th, 2016 at 11:49 AM ^
Is Detroit known for stinginess or something? I'm from the area, but don't quite get the reference.
October 26th, 2016 at 3:16 PM ^
There are those who have worked in the service industry and then there are you.
J/K but I was more making a statement about people of a certain age. I used to hear it a lot about Tigers players from old guys, but that probably happens all over.
Old people don't understand inflation.
October 27th, 2016 at 7:59 AM ^
back in the day at an old-line Detroit bank who couldn't understand why he had to pay college grads more than the $17.9k per year he started at back in the '60's.
It happens.

Or people grumpily say it's a sad testimony that the "highest paid state employee is the football coach," or something like that. Those people do not realize the head football coach is not paid out of state funds, but rather from athletic department funds.
Then again, a lot of people are faily unaware of basic accounting or economics.
But grumps will be grumps.

Pretty sure that makes him the highest paid public employee in the country. And well worth it.
October 26th, 2016 at 11:49 AM ^
He's basically the CEO of the team that makes it possible for the athletic department to be profitable. Without football selling out Michigan Stadium, there would be no lacrosse, soccer etc.
I bet Saban will get a nice raise soon, especially when the Texas rumors get going again.

Saban needs a serious raise. He is quite underpaid, even at 7 mil.
October 26th, 2016 at 12:07 PM ^
Worth every penny too. It's not very often that a head coach can come in and not only completely restore a great football program but take it to another level of success.

What is amazing is how generous the terms are for some of the coaches. Right now the market is on the coach's side. What struck me as amazing is how much some of the small schools are paying.
For a place like the UM, ND, Texas, Alabama, etc., a lot of the development alumni work is made easier with a strong FB program so I can see why the high pay is justifiable but look at some of the schools on the list - probably the HC salary consumes a heft percentage of the whole athletic department budget.
October 26th, 2016 at 12:10 PM ^
This is just one more way to distract all the other top coaches in the NCAA. The coaches will spend more of their personal energy on asking for a higher salary. Once again Harbaugh is way ahead of them. It is not about the money, it is about competing and winning.
October 26th, 2016 at 12:18 PM ^
works harder than Coach Harbaugh?
