The most boringest college football weekend in the history of ever
No two ranked teams are playing each other this weekend. There aren't even that many "ranked team plays a decent team" matchups. I double-checked out of disbelief.
Aside from being a homer cackling with glee as Michigan devours UCF, how many of these look even remotely interesting?
#1 Alabama vs. Western Kentucky
#2 Clemson vs. Troy
#3 Florida State vs. Charleston Southern (part of it, anyway)
#4 Ohio State vs. Tulsa
#5 Michigan vs. UCF
#6 Houston vs. Lamar
#7 Stanford (bye)
#8 Washington vs. Idaho
#9 Georgia vs. Nicholls
#10 Wisconsin vs. Akron
#11 Texas vs. UTEP
#12 Michigan State (bye)
#13 Louisville vs. Syracuse
#14 Oklahoma vs. Louisiana Monroe
#15 TCU vs. Arkansas
#16 Iowa vs. Iowa State
#17 Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech
#18 Notre Dame vs. Nevada
#19 Ole Miss vs. Wofford
#20 Texas A&M vs. Prairie View A&M
#21 LSU vs. Jacksonville State
#22 Oklahoma State vs. Central Michigan
#23 Baylor vs. SMU
#24 Oregon vs. Virginia
#25 Miami vs. Florida Atlantic
The B1G slate isn't much better with unranked conference teams facing such powerhouses as Florida International, Wyoming, Howard, Indiana State and Illinois State.
I'm glad football's back, but that kind of implies football is back, not cupcake-eating contest. On the upside, at least Michigan's easy OOC schedule is now a relative thing.

Anyone else getting some serious Deja vu?
May the Harbaugh be with you
September 9th, 2016 at 7:43 PM ^
No, but I just had some Duja Ve, that strange feeling that none of this has happened before
September 9th, 2016 at 7:46 PM ^
Might want to lay off the Duja Ve.
At least until the tailgating starts.

Truth.
This really is a whack week for college football though. I'm an Iowa fan now because my girlfriend is a native Hawkeye so their game vs Iowa State is interesting to me. Iowa people really hate the Iowa State folks and vice versa. It's a heated rivalry and its usually pretty close but unfortunately its also usually a mess of a game. Utah-BYU might not be bad and Syracuse-Louisville is OK so far and it has that feeling like it could be a wild 2nd half.
I'm shocked more teams looking for a quality OOC matchupds wouldn't schedule it for WEek 2 instead of Week 1 -get a real game under their belt before facing a tough opponent. Week 1 was great but maybe overloaded. I wonder how much of that is ESPN/TV's fault.

Apt caveat is apt. Harbaugh and Doc Brown are mad geniuses so I'd be excited if they played chess.
I'm more calling into question the claim that Michigan has an "easy" OOC schedule. Before I looked at the slate I would've been the first to agree. Now I'm like, easy compared to what? Who the frick is Prairie View A&M?
September 9th, 2016 at 7:30 PM ^
His glare alone results in a TFL.
September 9th, 2016 at 9:52 PM ^
Prairie View A&M is an NPR variety show hosted by Garrison Keilor.

Or the actual worst team ever

September 9th, 2016 at 7:24 PM ^
as evenly mtached middling teams and VT and Tennessee at BMS will interesting for two reasons - proof that it was a horrible idea to play a game there and that Tennessee will lose and another SEC team proves to be a fraud.
Other than that, yeah it's crap
September 9th, 2016 at 7:39 PM ^
In terms of parity and regional Game of Thrones drama, Pitt vs. PSU is the most intriguing matchup.
Arkansas miiiight shock TCU but I can't bring myself to care about any game involving Arkansas since, oh, 1999.
September 9th, 2016 at 11:05 PM ^
might be interesting although Arkansas had a rahter close call last week.

wasn't clear to me whether we were hoping to beat UCF or not
September 9th, 2016 at 7:30 PM ^
I agree that it's bad, but VT beating Tennessee would be nice. TCU-Arkansas will be interesting too. I don't know. Besides Michigan, who else am I looking forward to seeing? Nobody.

I actually think that Virginia Tech can win.

Virginia Tech struggled with Liberty. Tennessee is probably gonna win by a comfortable margin. App State >> Liberty

Even if circumstances were different, very few of these games could've plausibly been a ranked-vs.-ranked matchup, based on recent program history at the time the games were likely scheduled.
September 9th, 2016 at 8:17 PM ^
Yeah, its slim pickings for ones that could have potentially been ranked-v-ranked when scheduled. I've got:
Va. Tech v Tenn.
Arkansas vs. TCU
South Carolina vs. Miss St.
BYU vs. Utah
Penn St. vs. Pitt
...and that's about it. After that you get into things like Florida v. Kentucky or Oregon v. Virgina, those were never going to be ranked v. ranked.
September 9th, 2016 at 7:36 PM ^
TCU/Arkansas, Iowa/Iowa State (because rivalry game), UT/Va Tech all could be interesting. But yeah, wow, what a terrible slate, especially after the GREATEST OPENING WEEKEND EVARRRRRRRR hype ESPN was doing last week.

it's pretty funny to watch Iowa lose to them which happens surprisingly frequently.
September 9th, 2016 at 7:45 PM ^
I'm sure Iowa thinks what's been happening to us is pretty funny as well.
September 9th, 2016 at 10:26 PM ^
Iowa State has beaten Iowa a surprising amount, you're right. I'm pretty sure Iowa's best season in recent memory was 2002 when they lost one game...to a shitty Iowa State squad in the opener. Cost them a chance at the BCS championship game. Iowa fans also like to complain that every time they come into a season with any kind of hype -Iowa State beats them. I hope it doesnt happen this time.
September 9th, 2016 at 7:37 PM ^
Isn't week 2 always kind of shitty?
September 9th, 2016 at 7:44 PM ^
Point taken, but this year it's REALLY shitty. There's a difference between a day-old Big Mac and a day-old Big Mac dropped into a septic tank.
Last year's Week 2 featured Michigan State vs. Oregon, LSU vs. Mississippi St., Oklahoma vs. Tennessee and Boise State vs. BYU.
September 9th, 2016 at 7:49 PM ^
Last year, there was only 1 match-up of ranked teams in Week 8 (15 Texas A&M at 24 Ole Miss).... followed up by 1 match-up of ranked teams (9 Notre Dame at 21 Temple) in Week 9.
Be thankful for last week --- and next week, which is looking pretty darn good.
