Happy Oberon Day 2016
Happy Oberon Release Day! This is the day Bell's releases Oberon to most of the US. Some states like California and Florida get it year-round for some odd reason. While not the stronges or tastiest, it does remind me of summer and is my favorite. The availability of the micro-kegs is a summer highlight for parties up north. There will be a run on oranges in my neighborhood!
Just dropped off my best friend downtown for the Pub Crawl. I'll be joining...eventually. Horray, employment.
Agreed, reminds me of summer, and for that it gets a bonus :)
Oh yeah! While not my favorite beer, nothing else reminds me of spring more than that first sip.
So warm weather and sunshine don't remind you of spring first?
Definitely picked up a case for myself earlier. Regardless of outside temperature you drink that first Oberson and you warm right up.
I'm down to my last six-pack at my weekend house. Love the stuff but oddly only when consumed there in Michigan -- not back here in Chicago.
It just seems proper that way.
Every year I try it, and every year it tastes putrid. Don't get why people continue to give it a free pass
to take care with it. Yeah, if you break out a semi-cold Oberon and drink it it out of the bottle it is, frankly, pretty nasty. If you drink it really cold out of a glass with an orange slice on a hot day it is enjoyable. There can be no debate though - it is not the beer it used to be. I don't know enough about beer to know why, but Oberon today is not what it was 10-12 years ago.
...wh--.....
Here's an Oberon inspired protip for high IBU IPA's: drop a slice of orange into your pint glass. You'll thank me later.
How is that a pro-tip? EVeryone puts an orange in it.
In an IPA? Cuz that's what I was suggesting.

I certainly wouldn't put a fruit into my beer, but other drinkers can enjoy their beers however they see fit
that doesnt sound very hip

I was excited to grab a 4 pack here in PA. Then I had it and was pretty underwhelmed. It reminds me of Spotted Cow with the popular following.
A fine beer but nothing to write home about.

Bell's tonight! Can't wait!!
I wore out Oberon one summer at my old golf course a few years ago and there's better Bell's out there, but living in NC now I drink any Bell's whenever I find it on tap.

i agree it isn't what it used to be, but it still manages to taste like Spring and nostalgia all at the same time. I think that is why I get excited for it everyear. It reminds me of being a kid. I will definitely have one the next time it cracks 65 degrees and the sun is shining.
luck with that 65 degrees. I just looked at the extended forecast and wanted to punch something.
I liked Oberon better when it was called Solsun.

I look forward to the release more than the beer at this point. A few times per summer I like having a few on a hot day. The past few years haven't seemed as good as usual. The tallboy cans are great, though.
There is a UM Spirit Group event at Brewhouse South in Cool Springs for Oberon.
Details on the Facebook Event page
For me, this is the worst time of the year for beer (overall). The autumn and winter ales are so much better and it's not even close.

Gee, you sound like such a pleasant person.
drank a few too many Berliner Weisse.
I love summer beers. They match the weather and the food!
Any day is a good day for some XXXX

Didn't the brewer who first made Oberon leave and go to Arcadia a few years back, which is why Whitsun has tasted far better than Oberon the last few years?
I still like Oberon. Couldn't find the mini-keg anywhere. I have the 2008 (when I moved back to Michigan because fuck living anywhere else in the country) through 2014.

Predictable Oberon debate in predictable Oberon thread. I get that there are better beers out there and many craft nerds think Oberon is overrated, but today's craft drinkers don't realize (or care) what Oberon was when it came out originally at the beginning of the "craft movement" and for many people like myself just looking for a drinkable, balanced beer that isn't too heavy or hoppy, Oberon is the bee's knees. Do I like more complex beers? Yes. Is Oberon my favorite beer? No. But it was a pioneer in the movement to advertise craft beer. You may not like Oberon that much or at all, but you will respect it.
To me it's now more of a symbol of summer. It might be a little brisk outside, but Oberon is on tap and baseball is right around the corner.
