Angelique: Harbaugh encouraged Drake Johnson to hurdle for M Track and Field
Does anyone know if this can still save a scholarship like Miami did with Santana Moss?

That would be pretty cool if Drake decides to do it. I dont think the scholarship really matters, as Drake a Senior.
It would matter as Michigan is currently a few scholarships over the limit.
I think football players always count against football, even if offered a scholarship elsewhere...
It's not just football, anyone who's on athletic scholarship counts toward their sport's scholarship limits. There really is no such thing as a "football scholarship," and Drake would count against T&F's scholarship limits too.
I don't think that's true, actually. There's a heirarchy of sports to determine which sport the athlete's scholorship counts against. Basically, football, basketball and then everything else. As most of the rest of the sports, especially on the men's side typically hand out lots of partial scholarships. Having a kid on a full scholarship for football count against T&F numbers would be a big disadvantage to the T&F program.
It says that if you're on an athletic scholarship and you play football you count for football. Period, end of discussion.
Football trumps everything. Hoops trumps everything but football.
Kind of a right bower/left bower deal.
Bylaw 15.5.9.7 says that you only count in one sport no matter how many you play.
+1 for the euchre analogy.
Cuz if you turn it down you lose for an hour. Everyone knows this.

here.
From having 100 dual sport players that aren't any good at shotput or javelin throw or fencing, but don't count against the football scholarship.
O I C. I stand corrected then; I had always thought that a scholarship is a scholarship and you'd count on every team where you appeared on the roster. I shall grab my dunce cap and make for the corner.
T & F is has a scholarship limit of 12.6 and that includes XC. It would be incredibly poor judgment to take a full scholarship from those sports to free one up for football.

Does not save a scholarship spot. Any scholarship athlete (for another sport) also playing football has the scholarship count for football.
Edit: wording.
If you're on the football team it automatically counts as a football scholarship, regardless of sport.
Good for Drake though.

Alabama would've had mens and womens hockey to get more football players on scholarship. Could you imagine Derrick Henry on skates?
Answer: No Harbaugh. That dude exploits loopholes with an EUTM...

when miami had scholarships taken away and had to find a way to get athletes on the football team, so they would take top speedsters and put them on the track team and then have them "walk on" to the football team. It was chronicled in the epsn 30 for 30 on miami. they did it very under the radar and brought in kids as big time athletes to help keep their program and team above water till their ban ran out.
While it is true Moss had a track scholarship and then did the walk-on thing for the Miami football team, as soon as he played his first snap in a football game his scholarship automatically became a football scholarship.

I love Harbaugh's take on this. players who can perform in multiple sports show that they are athletes rather than just football players. Goes back to during the summer camps when he had the guys playing dodge ball and fielding fly balls. Great athletes make great football players.
Think this sums it upm not to take too much from Angelique
Harbaugh: “Did you ever win anything?”
Johnson: “I won six state championships.”
Harbaugh: “Did you ever do anything more than that?”
Johnson: “I was an All-American.”
Harbaugh: “Do you run track here?”
Johnson: “No, I wasn’t allowed to.”
Harbaugh: “Next year, you’re running track.”
Johnson: “I won six state championships.”
Mother of God.

Tyrone Wheatley was a Big 10 champion and All-American in the hurdles, and managed to play football reasonably well, too.
I mean, we've seen numerous running backs hurdle a defender. But hurdle a defender AND click his heels while he's at it? Hello, Heisman. They might even have to change the trophy after that.
Drake Johnson, like many of his predecessors, epitomizes the "Michigan Man" mythology. You can't keep a good man down, a thow away line that has real meaning with Drake Johnson. Twice overcoming knee injuries, feeling sorry for himself not for more than a day, instead he remained, and continues to remain, in good cheer while motivating team and fans alike.
I know I'm not alone in wishing him well, and wishing him a most successful last season wearing the winged helmet. Wherever he may then go, whatever he may then do, I'm sure he'll do it with excellence while wearing his iridescent smile.
I've been on the Drake Johnson bandwagon since he carved up Ohio State at Columbus.
A healthy Drake Johnson is a difference maker for us. He hits the holes very quickly and slithers through tight spaces that may not be that well blocked. We don't have another back like him.
Johnson’s schedule is intense. During spring football practice, which concludes April 1 with the spring game, he will participate in every practice on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. On the off-days from football, he has track practice.
That schedule sounds particularly brutal somehow, but that's awesome that he is doing it and kudos to Harbaugh for encouraging him to do it. Not really sure why this was discouraged under the previous staff - the benefits seem apparent to me, especially when you do both well.
That's a lot of work with little recovery time in between.....I'd be nervous about this but I'm not paid millions to worry about it.
Yeah, I was wondering about that too. Does Johnson get let out early or get a pass when they run wind sprints or something at least? Football is already full-time. You need some recovery time at least.
Don't think this is a scholarship issue as much as it is Harbaugh wanting Drake to test his durability, while at the same time, have Drake trust his knees again. If he made it through a whole track and field season running hurdles, that would lead to a huge boost in confidence imo.
That was just the prelude to the heel click.
but in reverse. IIRC Bo was upset Butch ran track.
Morgan Trent was on the track team too.
I don't understand any football coach not letting his players participate with track & field. This is not an issue with the southern schools.
We've been over this, if a player is playing both football and another sport, the scholarship counts against the football teams numbers.
health concerns.
Did Hoke routinely not allow cross training/participation?
