OT - Awful Announcing
Was it just me or was Phil Simms awful (again)? Twitter was eating him alive and even Chris Cooley (former Redskin) watched the game on mute. Who else has been this bad? During the season I was ear-raped by Brock Huard, twice in a row, Spielman is up and down through a broadcast, and I absolutely refuse to listen to Pam Ward. And Blackledge is pretty meh too

Without Musberger, how would we know how hot AJ McCarron's girlfriend Katherine Webb is? I mean, what's nicer than having a septagenarian enthuse over the attractiveness of someone a third his age?

Or know that because ABC put Jenn Sterger on TV, "1,500 red-blooded Americans just decided to apply to Florida State"?

I am so glad that I never have to listen to Musberger again. He gets on a meme before the game starts and sticks with it - even if the opposite is happening in the game. Sucky Entertainment Commentator belongs in the SEC.

to the Rose Bowl in non-playoff years, you will hear Musberger again.
February 8th, 2016 at 9:45 AM ^
He still has an A+ play-by-play man's voice, but I agree, what he says with that voice tends to be awful these days.

Dakich does this all the time
February 8th, 2016 at 10:58 AM ^
Dakich because he is honest and just calls it how he sees it. When a player is dogging it he just says it or when a team doesn't show he calls them out. He flat out said we were finished against Indiana basically before their big run even started.
February 8th, 2016 at 1:58 PM ^
has become like Vitale--he says so much irrelevant and inconsistent shit that he is bound to be correct once in awhile. Also like Vitale, Dakich now lives in a bubble, spews platitudes and pet observations, and simply doesn't do his homework like he once did. Kara Lawson, for example, is far better prepared--as is obvious when they are in the studio together.

Galloway is far and away the worst commentator / analyst I've ever seen. He does a worse job than Lou Holtz at cover up his bias and is far less entertaining.
That said, there are a ton of terrible commentators; Phil Sims is definitely up there...
We need to just start an army of Keith Jackson clones

all good selections, but where is the hate for Cris Collinsworth? He is far worse than Sims (who is bad).

Doc Emrick, Gary Thorne or Martin Tyler should call every sporting event. If they aren't available, the game should not be broadcast until one of the two is able to watch it remotely and provide play by play.

Seriously. Gary was fantastic. Emrick is excellent, though.

In terms of purely calling a game, Bob Cole is my favorite hockey announcer now that Dick Irvin is retired.
Gary Thorne made watching Oriole games fun as a casual observer, so he definitely gets my vote for one of the best crossover announcers in the field. It still feels weird looking at him without Bill Clement and his stache.

Bob Cole is my favorite announcer ever. HNIC every Saturday growing up.
Plus, they way he said De-troy-it was awesome.

the two finest hockey (wings, of course) announcers of all time? loved those guys growing up. they were basically each like the earnie harwell of hockey.

Those are my favorites as well, though it's clear that they sometimes get some pre-game talking points and talk to them multiple times a game, regardless of what happens on the field sometimes.
I also like Tirico, and while Gruden is all over the place, he is at least entertaining, optimistic, and every once and a while drops knowledge (not nearly enough, but at least it's evident he knows what he's talking about).
And while Al Michaels is getting up there in age, his voice is iconic. I can easily put up with Michaels/Collinsworth compared to most other teams. I'll throw Jim Nantz in as solid as well.
I honestly don't mind most announcing teams. I think every team tends to hate each one because at some point or another they talk up an opponent and talk down their team. My biggest problem is that I feel like if most of them actually put in the amount of work that should be expected from major media types, then they could be great. The collective knowledge at places like ESPN, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, etc. is crazy. Yet they come at us with hot takes. But I guess hot takes sell, so...

I have no hesitation in saying that there is no better color analyst than Spielman. Hands down the most knowledgeable and conveys it.

The CBS crew is probably my least favorite. Nantz is good, but in the same way that vanilla ice cream is good. He brings zero excitement to the game. Of the network channels, NBC has the best NFL crew.
February 8th, 2016 at 9:36 AM ^
Yeah, for the Super Bowl I thoght he seemed bored to be there. Zero excitement. Zero big moment feel.
And then add to that the game sucked and was between two teams most people don't care about (and the commercials were pretty meh) and it all had the feel of just going through the motions.
It was the Super Bowl so you pretended to be into it, even though you were not. I started to fall asleep when it bacame clear that Carolina was not going to score once, much less twice, to get back in the game.
Oh well, we were due for a let down. Over the last decade or so we've had some great Super Bowls. Last year's may have been the best ever. Can't expect that every year.
