OT: East Coast Deathstorm 2016
NWS has issued it's first ever blizzard watch for the DC/Md/Va area.
12" is now the minimum; NoVa, Montgomery County may hit 2-3'.
Repent!
PS Yes, Northern New York and the UP get this all the time. We have 10x the population with much less the snow removal resources in this area.

Lol, I too was wondering how it would effect Mr. Gary's travel plans as well

We call this kind of event Tuesday here in Michigan.

I live in Mount Airy, MD.
This is what we're expected to see (from Wunderground):

Yeah, based on what my weather geek friends are saying, those numbers still might be conservative.
Still two days out, but all the signs are present for it to be a monster.

Given that the OP included the sentence "12 inches is the now the minumum" in the post, I cannot believe there is not a single "that's what she said" joke here yet...
January 20th, 2016 at 1:20 PM ^
That's what she said.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:05 PM ^
Sunday looks alright.
January 20th, 2016 at 11:51 AM ^
This should be interesting. I'm in CT and still saying only 3-5" for here, which would be fine
January 20th, 2016 at 11:53 AM ^
I'm in NoVA and I'm pumped. As long as I still have electricity, I hope we get 3 feet of snow... that would be good for at least the whole next week off work.
Nothing I love more than shoveling snow each winter whenever we get a storm, knowing that there will be jack shit on anyone's schedule for days on end.
I'm originally from Michigan... at first I thought it was insane and ridiculous down here when it snows. Now I just think it is awesome.
Beer and shovel at the ready.

the 30-50MPH wind gusts should take care of the snow on the roofs
January 20th, 2016 at 11:43 PM ^
Or the roof itself.

Inform Harbaugh about this rising recruit. We need him on our team!

I hate trying to drive around NoVA during any winter event, but there's something nice about having the whole region shut down for a few days as the snow moves in. I don't remember a lot about the storms in Michigan growing up, but here in VA it seems like we get our snow all at once rather than spread out over the season.
January 20th, 2016 at 11:54 AM ^
I'm in SW VA ready for some good sledding. Per WeatherUnderground it iooks like we'll get 12"+

I'm near Roanoke. I'm ok with a foot or so, and the kids are definitely looking forward to it. I hope we don't get much more than that.

NYC is usually fine. Most places are still walkable. Also the sidewalks have steam run underneath to keep them warm (and smelly).
January 20th, 2016 at 12:18 PM ^
Not to mention the way that the MTA keeps subway tracks cleared of ice and snow build up is to just run trains on them, so even public transit doesn't really stop or slow down much.

Being from the metro-Detroit area, with stints in the UP, and now living in Stafford, VA, personally I can't wait for the snow. My co-workers, knowing I'm from Michigan, keep asking, "bet you're looking forward to this, aren't you?!" To which I reply, "No matter how much, it won't be enough!" Go Blue!!!

Living in NC with an already hour-long commute, I'm fucking terrified.
Last time it snowed here:

I must say that burning your car is an innovative way to stay warm under those circumstances.

craziest part of that picture is that there is actually a business named Fred's Beds that does enough business to both have a truck and have the company named on the side of it.

Clearly that is an FBI surveillance truck.

is not forecast for Michigan right now but I really would not mind it if it was. My take on winter is this - I never get irritated or really even discuss snow unti March 1, at which time I get very pissed every time it snows thereafter. I cannot golf from November through February and I accept that, but my clubs come up from the basement on March 1 and I expect to be playing by the 15th and grilling burgers afterword. If Winter starts taking away my March and April I am not a happy camper.

a lot of times that the cost of the trip plus the hastle of getting there sometimes impedes my ability to enjoy it. So I take the winter break and it makes me that much more excited for it when it gets here.

There's a few weekends when your husband is out of town?
Good to know. In case I'm ever in the neighborhood. And by 'in the neighborhood" I mean sitting in a tree across the street with binoculars and night vision goggles.
