MGo love not enough - McCaffrey wins Paul Hornung Award
Christian McCaffrey is the 2015 Paul Hornung Award winner.
They don't show the voter results, but Jabrill Peppers had a substantial lead near the midnight voting deadline (Christian McCaffrey was a distant, distant third). The fan vote accounted for 1/17th of the final voting, so it didn't mean much other than providing us a chance to show our MGo love.
Look for Peppers to be in the mix next year.

Well, I'm not sure there is a compelling argument against McCaffrey as the winner.

He doesn't play defense, so.....
December 9th, 2015 at 8:51 AM ^
I can live with that one. He was a beast. No defense but his return game was pretty sick.
December 9th, 2015 at 8:52 AM ^
So the fan vote meant NOTHING???
If the Hornung award is for high-level, versatile players, doesn't get much more versatile than McCaffrey. His Pac-12 Championship game performance was ridiculous.
Jabrill will likely be up for this every year.
December 9th, 2015 at 8:57 AM ^
The fan vote was for 1/17 of the total, or something like that. Probably not really worth all the time we spent obsessing over it.
December 9th, 2015 at 9:00 AM ^
NOT WORTH IT?!
DON'T YOU EVER SAY THAT

Never voting again. First it was the blue M & Ms, and now this???

I mean, whatever, but Hey! We showed those other players which team's fans get behind their boys anyway!
December 9th, 2015 at 5:09 PM ^
I'm sure the love meant a lot to Jabrill. That was worth all of the voting spam.

McCaffery is a phenomenal player, with feet reminscent of Barry Sanders's. He is a game-changer, and rises to the occasion in big games. #noFredJackson4reelz
You could make a strong case for Peppers, but I'm fine with this result. As long as it didn't go to Johnny Consonant out of Ole MIss, my outrage level is low.
And really, doesn't this just mean that Stanford marshalled its bots a bit better than Michigan did. Losing to Ole Miss on a bot-battle would be like losing to MSU in a solar car race.
December 9th, 2015 at 9:02 AM ^
Nothing to do with bots... Peppers won the fan vote but the 16 "real" voters selected McCaffrey. I can't argue with the results. With the extremely low level of fan support for McCaffrey, it highlights the "don't give a damn" attitude of the Stanford fans.
December 9th, 2015 at 9:10 AM ^
YOU tell me how I'm supposed to throw in a shot at MSU's solar car program if the Hornung Award result wasn't a result of the bot battle. Where's my hook now?
I'm waiting ... .
(Fair point. I'd not seen much of McCaffrey before his last two games, but he was really impressive against good competition.)

He is an extremely versatile and talented player. I think it would be a shame if he did not win the Heisman Trophy. Good for him to pick up some hardware along the way.
December 9th, 2015 at 9:09 AM ^
McCaffrey has 1847 rushing yards with 8 TDs, 540 receiving yards with 4 TDs, 1042 kickoff return yards with 1 TD, 67 punt return yards, and 39 passing yards with 2 TDs. That's a pretty versatile year I think.
December 9th, 2015 at 9:17 AM ^
Yeah, but how many pass breakups did he have, huh?
December 9th, 2015 at 10:03 AM ^
Is he at least 6'0"?
December 9th, 2015 at 10:38 AM ^
Hard to say. We should analyze some pictures he is in and maybe we can find out.
December 9th, 2015 at 11:31 AM ^
Dude's not small. I bet McCaffrey is taller than Peppers.
December 9th, 2015 at 11:25 AM ^
The dude broke Barry's all purpose yards record*. Pretty good IMO.
*He is 30 yards short if you count Barry's bowl game. Which the NCAA doesn't. Also Barry had 2 less games to do it. But still. Prett BAD ASS.
December 9th, 2015 at 11:31 AM ^
It's really dumb that the NCAA does that. OK, maybe they don't have the stats from the 1902 Rose Bowl, but surely they can find them for bowls from the '70s/'80s/'90s.

Clearly the voters are racially motivated.

December 9th, 2015 at 9:13 AM ^
Maybe, unlikely, this can be used as a recruiting pitch for when were battling it out head-to-head with Stanford. McCaffrey, a Heisman candidate and one of the more explosive and productive players their school has ever seen and the fan base still doesnt give enough of a shit to get him even remotely close in the voting process.
That poll was the ultimate click bait though. I was not aware the voting accounted for only 1 of 17 votes. Either ax the poll or knock down the amount of people given a vote.

But he also got 3 more games to do it in.
NO ONE will ever touch the yds/gm Barry put up. It makes video games look silly.

Just 16/17th of a congrats, the other went to Peppers.

December 9th, 2015 at 9:49 AM ^
But they're still a doggone tree.
December 9th, 2015 at 10:17 AM ^
to stay away from something that is only 1/17th of the total. They could have created a program to generate votes and win the fan vote, but they probably focused on the other 16 areas.

- Jabrill Peppers - mgoblog (73,129 votes)
- Robert Nkemdiche - Ole Miss (65,072 votes)
- Jabrill Peppers - Michigan less mgoblog (2,298 votes)
- Christian McCaffrey - Stanford (1,279 votes)
- Adoree' Jackson - USC (1,132 votes)
December 9th, 2015 at 9:45 AM ^
Yeah, I am a huge fan of McCaffrey and really hope we land his brother in the 2017 recruiting class. It is very hard to argue against him winning this award, BUT Jabrill plays all of the same positions he does on Special Teams and Offense (QB, WR, RB) AND STARTS ON DEFENSE. So while McCaffrey is very very deserving of this award.. I think Jabrill deserves it just as much. It's too bad they couldn't both win.
December 9th, 2015 at 9:46 AM ^
I will say this - I was impressed with the lack of fan attention being given to McCaffrey on the fan vote because it seemed like Stanford fans either didn't know or didn't really care about the poll. Granted, this was for 1/17th of the total vote, but even the chance to show confidence in their player didn't get them to a computer for the most part.
That being said, it's hard to make an argument for Christian McCaffrey not winning this particular award. Other than play somewhere on the defense, he pretty much does it all and is rather productive when doing it.

I wish someone would've made this clear ahead of time...
That was a lot of time waste and silly threads that meant nothing if our votes really didn't matter.
I'm pretty sure if we all knew that it was 1/17th, people wouldn't have been trying to remind us to vote every day and folks wouldn't have been voting for different devices.
I demand this Hornung committee give us an explanation.
