Blocked field goal - only 9 men on the field [Ed: There were 11]
The TV announcers made no mention of this, but I've seen two stories - one on Sporting News, the other attached - that state that Michigan only had 9 players on the field when NW blocked the field goal.

Is that correct? How many times can special teams screw up the body count in a season?
Mod edit: I took one down before but here's the picture debunking the "nine men" post. JGB.

maybe i counted wrong, but i went back and checked and i saw 11

You're not supposed to include the kicker and the holder, so it's 9.

They had 11 on the field. Someone brough up a screenshot showing 9, but the center and one other player were hidden. Another angle showed all 11.

In the One Frame at a Time posted on the home page, I just counted what was in the screen and I get to nine. Of course, a couple of players could be out of the frame, but . . .
Ed. I see some are confirming that there were players hidden.

This was debunked. Michigan had 11.

Nice work, mgosnopes

They had 11. There was an incorrect message board post that suggest there were only 9.
This thread should probably be deleted so no incorrect rumors are spread further.

there a rumour going around that the coaching staff is incompetent? Hadn't heard that....

That link is dead now...kinda like this non-story.

I DVR'd the game and rewatched just a couple points (I had to miss the end - and yes, apparently I am a masochist for not just deleting that thing) and counted players from the presnap endzone view which showed 11.

It didn't seem like the sort of thing that the announcers would miss, even if sad experience this season might suggest that it was the sort of thing that the special teams coaches could very well miss.

This isn't true, but it is true that there was at least one punt where they were furiously running in an 11th man at the last second because someone forgot they were supposed to be on the field.
Why is this stuff so difficult?
November 10th, 2014 at 2:41 PM ^
unless I have my shoes off, then I can only count to 20. I can count to 21 though!! But only if I'm....errrr, nevermind.
November 10th, 2014 at 10:56 PM ^
I've never heard it referred to as that.

Wile's kick hit the ankles of his lineman... maybe if we had only 9 on the field it would have had a lane to sail through

It was still a horrible special teams play by Michigan. Watching Michigan play this ineptly was like every Wolverine fan's worst nightmare.
November 10th, 2014 at 3:12 PM ^
and how do you not always have at least 2 guys pressuring the punter, even in punt return mode. NU fumbled a punt snap and we had no one near the punter. that's horrible.
November 10th, 2014 at 2:56 PM ^
and somebody should have called a TO. NW overloaded Michigan's right side and nobody took time to see it or were simply not taught to do so and call the TO.

not the jerseys, and you'll see 11 guys.
November 10th, 2014 at 3:08 PM ^
this is unacceptable
November 10th, 2014 at 3:10 PM ^
i know there was a NU punt where we only had 10 on the field and the 11th guy hauled ass onto the field and got to the line of scrimmage just as the ball was snapped.

had that exact same thing happen Saturday against LSU. Fire Saban.

don't need 11 on Alabama. Against us 9 would be fine.

It sure felt like they needed more guys though...

I thought only the Romulans (who perfected it) and the Klingons (who obtained the technology from them) were in possession of it.
If Hoke somehow got his hands on one, though, he obviously hasn't learned how to use it to our advantage. I wonder what's the price to keep it once he's sent packing?
November 10th, 2014 at 10:59 PM ^
Seems like there's a better variation.

They need to run around until the last second and then literally slide into place. Doesn't this team know its history???
November 10th, 2014 at 4:43 PM ^
I know people think Hoke's an idiot and has some history with not getting a guy out on punt return, but he's not sending out 9 guys for a kick. The picture obviously proved it, but anyone who seriously thought this was the case should remember noboyd else has argued about it for days now. We're pretty anal around here; something like that probably wouldn't have gotten past everyone.
