Bad timing

Steve Alford
John Beilein
Shaka Smart
Nate Oats
Dusty May
Everybody needs to stfu with "they won't come here"......It's a highly coveted position in the best conference
John Beilein
He won't come here and I don't want an 85-year-old who hates coaching college ball as our head coach.
Beilein hated recruiting pre-NIL/unlimited transfers. No shot he comes back.
Yep. The things Beilein hated about college ball are now cranked up to 11. Coaching college would be a nightmare for him right now.
Not saying we have a great situation currently, but Alford has done his best work at the Group of Five level (and not at the Power Five level). His career path is fascinating. If he comes to Michigan he'll screw up and then head for Bowling Green, where he'll win a couple of MAC championships. If he's not retirement age at that point, someone like Pitt will hire him.
The B1G is categorically not the best basketball conference.
They won't come here.
You sure it's that coveted right now?
The BIG is not the best conference in CBB any more.
I'm with you on 1 and 3. But I think it's a pretty coveted job still. Not the MOST coveted job in the country; we're ultimately a football school which puts a bit of a ceiling on our MBB job (we'll just never be Duke or Kansas in that regard, and I honestly wouldn't want to be).
But we're still a Power conference job with a rich athletic department. We've seen in the very recent past that fan engagement can be excellent........as long as the team performs. We're fair weather basketball fans to an extent, but the fandom is here, and we have a national footprint. This is a place you can legitimately win championships, but it has some hurdles compared to the absolute "best" MBB jobs (transfers, NIL money prioritizing football).
Alford has been mediocre multiple times at the high major level.
Shaka's teams crap the bed in March, failed at Texas, but other than that, he seems like a decent fit.
I wouldn’t mind giving Fred Hoiberg a look thought, though his Iowa State teams didn’t fare well in the tournament either.

John Beilein is done with the daily grind and comfortably semi-retired at his homes in Naples, Florida and Petoskey, Michigan. He is fine with his advisory role with the Pistons and occasional appearances on BTN.
Nate Oats has too much baggage.
Shaka Smart tried the Power 5 at Texas and failed. He seems to thrive at the mid-major level.
Steve Alford is 60 years old. How much longer will he stick around?
That leaves Dusty May on your list. He has built a nice program at FAU and he is a Midwest guy. He would be an intriguing hire.
You know Marquette is power five right?
0% chance Beilein comes back to college basketball in this climate.
He left well before Saban, but for the exact same reasons. He saw it coming and I don't blame these guys if they want no part of it...it is not what they signed up for.
Now you can argue about what they signed up for...but there is no question college sports had changed.
If all of a sudden your job changed, you might be looking for another one as well.
I hate that people want to place blame or put their capes on for either "side"...both are in the right. The debate is what happens next.
Anyway, 0% chance for Beilein.

Your real hot list:
1. Juwan Howard
That would be a blockbuster hire. Imagine the classes he would recruit!! FAB FIVE BABY!!!!!
March 13th, 2024 at 11:19 PM ^
Very good chance you'll need to continue your list
March 14th, 2024 at 12:06 AM ^
....
13. Brad Underwood
14. Scott Drew
15. Lamont Paris
16. Bill Self
17. Mark Few
March 13th, 2024 at 11:25 PM ^
You could add Bobby Knight, Dean Smith and Al McGuire to this list.
March 14th, 2024 at 12:09 AM ^
Nah. They are aren't familiar with NIL and the portal. Or at least not the portal that matters for college basketball.
March 14th, 2024 at 12:16 AM ^
Sat next to Al McGuire on a flight from Milwaukee to Grand Rapids in 1980.
He was very humble and not interested in a conversation.
My first sports celebrity interaction.

Man, I forgot how much I miss that guy
Hard to see a coach leaving a historically strong basketball school like UCONN or NC. You also don't want a coach over say [57]. You want someone who at least has the potential of coaching 10 years, can adapt to the transfer portal age and is still up for a big change. A 65 year old John Calipari isn't going to leave Kentucky.
Hell no to Sampson, Self, Calipari or Pearl. All have baggage and questionable character/morals. None of those would leave their current situations anyways.

Warde has to be so upset by how obvious it is that he must actually do something for once.
March 14th, 2024 at 10:54 AM ^
But the man is an absolute master at doing nothing. I read something quoting Warde that a decision on Men's Basketball would be forthcoming in short order. Sounds like last fall and Jim's contract extension.
March 13th, 2024 at 11:22 PM ^
We could keep Juwan and replace the assistants with Jalen Rose CWebb Jimmy King and Ray Jackson.
March 13th, 2024 at 11:29 PM ^
CWebb really the perfect fit here. did anyone else in history ever personify "MOROSE" whilst sitting on the bench?
As long as we have someone else on the bench who knows how many timeouts we have.
Only if Ray Jackson gets promoted to assistant coach mid-season. #symmetry

Here’s a wild one:
Becky Hammon.
discuss.
March 14th, 2024 at 12:06 AM ^
Only if she can also bring along two sons who can star for our team… wait, Juwan didn’t do that either and he turned out to be a really lousy coach.
Becky Hammon? Sure, why not!
Here is not a wild one: Dawn Staley.

Whoooooooo’s got it better than us? Everybody with a basketball
FlightAware confirms a large number of planes inbound to Detroit Metro today, clearly Warde is interviewing thousands of potential candidates.
What if Warde just grabs a random person at baggage claim and says "here's a 2 year contract and a basketball, good luck!"
Worked for AFC Richmond.
I still like Seth’s idea of just giving the basketball coach role to our best football player as an NIL gig. The MBB team will still suck but Will Johnson may stay another year if he’s making Howard’s salary
Will can ball. Player-coach would be a plus here.

I remember wishing Mitch McGary could play TE when football was in the dumpster. Now I'm wishing Mason Graham could play the 4 or the 5.
March 14th, 2024 at 10:31 AM ^
Given KG's speed, I'd love to see Kenneth running the break. Ain't nobody taking that charge.
March 14th, 2024 at 12:56 PM ^
There was a Joe Moore award winning OL that avoided that charge in the national championship game LOL.
I believe that is how Dennis Rodman was discovered.
March 14th, 2024 at 11:16 PM ^
Weve been upgraded.
What if he's pulling a Bill Martin and interviewing candidates at an airport hotel in Chicago tho
With Trev Alberts leaving Nebraska, now is the time to pounce on Hoiberg.
