But they hired an outside guy. Moore is a player’s coach. Look at how the players responded to him during the season WHEN HE WAS THE HEAD COACH!
January 24th, 2024 at 7:06 PM ^
More like an Ellerbe 2.0 if we must compare the risk. However, I think Harbaugh's effusive praise of this young staff is believable, so if you can keep most of them together it might be a better option at the moment than a search.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:15 PM ^
The crucial difference there is that Ellerbe had been hired as an assistant only three months before he was bumped up to interim HC and had been a failed HC before that (Tom Goss promoted Ellerbe in lieu of Brian Dutcher because he wanted someone who wasn't connected to the Ed Martin scandal). Moore, on the other hand, has been on Harbaugh's staff for six years and doesn't have the strike of a failed HC stint against him.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:19 PM ^
Yes, I agree, was just pointing out the path to hire is more akin to that than the Howard hire. Though all came from untimely coaching departures. I'm comfortable with a Moore hire. To me, there are very few candidates that aren't a high risk. The upside with Moore is, if he turns out to be as good as Harbaugh says he will be, we could be looking at decades.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:30 PM ^
Steve Fisher was 44 when he took over with similar experience.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:09 PM ^
Agreed.
At the beginning of the season, everyone thought UM's O would be better than UM's D. The opposite was the case. Minter is a better coach than Sherrone. Sherrone's decent. Minter is elite.
Unfortunately, UM isnt getting Minter. Warde wants Sherrone, and I guarantee part of Harbaugh's deal with the Chargers was to throw so much money at Minter that Minter couldnt possibly say no to the Chargers.

Moore was also Harbaugh's choice to be the head coach the last three games. Different skill sets, lots of great coordinators are not great head coaches.
January 25th, 2024 at 4:17 PM ^
harbaugh preferred Moore

Defense has more talent this year than last year so thinking Moore didn't do a good job compared to Minter isn't really fair. Moore coached the o-line to two Joe Moore Awards. Harbaugh promoted Moore in his absence. I would go with Moore for those reasons. I am not sure who a coach search firm would find or recommend that would be clearly a better choice. Michigan did cover the spread with Coach Moore at the helm so there is some evidence he can get the job done.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:03 PM ^
Sherrone Moore. Jesse Minter. John Harbaugh.

Jack Harbaugh > John and Jim

I had the exact same list in my mind. I believe they are also in order of likelihood of taking the job.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:03 PM ^
Serious questions - is there not going to be a search? Like, interviews of candidates, including Moore, and see who’s best?
January 24th, 2024 at 7:07 PM ^
Let's be honest.
Moore beat Penn State on the road.
Moore beat Maryland on the road.
And most importantly Moore beat OSU.
No. The job is his.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:15 PM ^
Head coach is a bigger job than game day coaching.
There's also no way to know how much better Jim may have done if he were coaching those games.
It's possible we win those regardless of who was behind the wheel.
No harm in having him as an interim for a year though and see how he does.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:32 PM ^
Interim for a year kills recruiting.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:53 PM ^
Please allow me to introduce you to Bill Cubit.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:16 PM ^
Yeah man. This isn’t that hard. He should be named HC in next hour if Warde is smart…oh wait
of course we’d love for Minter to stay…that ain’t happening.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:28 PM ^
PSU was a good win, although no offense was schemed up. Massive o line and running the ball. Maryland was a bit too close. Minter is the reason for the OSU win. The offense seemed to go to sleep for 2 quarters every big game. All 3 games that Moore won, Harbaugh was still coaching and game planning all week. If Moore is the pick, I hope he's successful. Maybe recruiting will pick up if the coach isn't interviewing with the NFL every year.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:34 PM ^
Often when the O "went to sleep" there were key dropped passes or JJ missing wide open receivers; primarily the final 3 games.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:31 PM ^
I find this take to be so naive. Harbaugh coaches the team from Sunday til Saturday. Literally coaches all but the 1 hour it takes to play the game every week that Moore was acting head coach. It seems awfully generous to give these wins to Moore. Even more generous to believe that’s all it takes to be the front runner for the winningest program in the country.
January 24th, 2024 at 8:47 PM ^
Fair points, but who is available that anyone would want more than Moore? It seems every other blue-chip program has a coach that is struggling. Is there some brilliant OC or DC out there is ripe for the Michigan job? There are few coaches out there that have proven that unlimited NIL money isn't enough.
Is Michigan really going to break the piggy bank to lure a proven coach? I did predict that Brady Hoke would be the next Michigan coach in the October when Rich Rod was still on board. I couldn't think of anyone better that would actually accept the job for a reasonable amount of money. Note: Schiano, Ferentz, Miles, and Fitzgerald among others have turned down the Michigan job. I might ask Pete Carroll if he could recommend anyone, but a few phone calls of that nature should have been made a few weeks ago.
January 24th, 2024 at 8:16 PM ^
Who’s to say Minter couldn’t have done the same?
January 24th, 2024 at 9:16 PM ^
Maybe Harbaugh, since his choice was Moore.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:11 PM ^
There should be a search. Considering UM was going to make Harbaugh the highest paid coach in college football, that means UM can afford anyone.
There wont be a search. Warde wants Sherrone, and I guarantee Harbaugh's deal with the Chargers includes the Chargers dumping so much $$$ into Minter's front-yard that it will be impossible for Minter to say no to the Chargers.

January 24th, 2024 at 7:11 PM ^
Why? A search will take weeks. You will sabotage the program by allowing the players to panic and hit the portal
January 24th, 2024 at 7:22 PM ^
You're making a decision for the next decade not just next year. Who's to say Moore is even good after pretty much the whole defense leaves next year and most of the kids who have had major playing time these last 3 years are all gone.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:36 PM ^
1) Kickass recruiter
2) Team loves him
3) Insane offensive line coach
4) Consistently schemed stuff open, execution was a bit lackluster this year for whatever reason (Blake injury, OL took time to gel, lack of meaningful competition until November, maybe bad coaching but I doubt it)
5) Lacks ego to look super clever and content with calling a billion runs in a row against PSU.
6) Won on the road against PSU on like 4 hours notice, beat Ohio State, won a trap game against Maryland
Does that guarantee he'll be a great head coach? No. Is it about as strong a resume you can get without him having P5 success as a head coach? Yes. And looking outside, the best head coaches you could get and fit culturally are...Fisch and DeBoer, basically. Fisch would look like a total ass to leave. I guess you could like, call Dan Lanning and make Phil Knight give him another raise. Brohm's at his alma mater and the job he always wanted and he wasn't THAT successful at Purdue. Chris Klieman's in his late 50s already. Nobody else is even that intriguing to me except maaaaaaaaaaybe Leipold, but he just turned down Washington. And is 59.
January 24th, 2024 at 8:18 PM ^
Is he that great of a recruiter especially in this NIL era? Our recruiting isn't great, especially on offense.
He's a great OL coach, I will for sure give you that.
I think he's an average OC, I'm not going to say any time it was bad was because of the players. I think the offense was worse this year than last year. I think you can find another coach to replicate what he did.
Yes this team loves him, but that's not a reason to hire a coach you might have for the next decade. Next year, a bunch of the team that contributed to these last few years will be gone.
You can hire Moore if every other better candidate says no, but he's not the best candidate. I don't think you hand it to him out of convenience.
January 25th, 2024 at 7:04 AM ^
Plus, you actually get answers / perspective from him during interviews...

The two best HC were taken this cycle.
There are some good ones still left, like Minter, but forget about Minter. I guarantee part of Harbaugh's deal with the Chargers was to throw so much $$$ at Minter that he will most certainly go along with Harbaugh to the Chargers.
