The crucial difference there is that Ellerbe had been hired as an assistant only three months before he was bumped up to interim HC and had been a failed HC before that (Tom Goss promoted Ellerbe in lieu of Brian Dutcher because he wanted someone who wasn't connected to the Ed Martin scandal). Moore, on the other hand, has been on Harbaugh's staff for six years and doesn't have the strike of a failed HC stint against him.

Yes, I agree, was just pointing out the path to hire is more akin to that than the Howard hire. Though all came from untimely coaching departures. I'm comfortable with a Moore hire. To me, there are very few candidates that aren't a high risk. The upside with Moore is, if he turns out to be as good as Harbaugh says he will be, we could be looking at decades.

Agreed.

At the beginning of the season, everyone thought UM's O would be better than UM's D.  The opposite was the case.  Minter is a better coach than Sherrone.  Sherrone's decent.  Minter is elite.

Unfortunately, UM isnt getting Minter.  Warde wants Sherrone, and I guarantee part of Harbaugh's deal with the Chargers was to throw so much money at Minter that Minter couldnt possibly say no to the Chargers.

Defense has more talent this year than last year so thinking Moore didn't do a good job compared to Minter isn't really fair.  Moore coached the o-line to two Joe Moore Awards.  Harbaugh promoted Moore in his absence.  I would go with Moore for those reasons.  I am not sure who a coach search firm would find or recommend that would be clearly a better choice.  Michigan did cover the spread with Coach Moore at the helm so there is some evidence he can get the job done.

PSU was a good win, although no offense was schemed up. Massive o line and running the ball. Maryland was a bit too close. Minter is the reason for the OSU win. The offense seemed to go to sleep for 2 quarters every big game. All 3 games that Moore won, Harbaugh was still coaching and game planning all week. If Moore is the pick, I hope he's successful. Maybe recruiting will pick up if the coach isn't interviewing with the NFL every year.

I find this take to be so naive.  Harbaugh coaches the team from Sunday til Saturday.  Literally coaches all but the 1 hour it takes to play the game every week that Moore was acting head coach.  It seems awfully generous to give these wins to Moore.  Even more generous to believe that’s all it takes to be the front runner for the winningest program in the country.

Fair points, but who is available that anyone would want more than Moore?  It seems every other blue-chip program has a coach that is struggling.  Is there some brilliant OC or DC out there is ripe for the Michigan job?  There are few coaches out there that have proven that unlimited NIL money isn't enough.

Is Michigan really going to break the piggy bank to lure a proven coach?  I did predict that Brady Hoke would be the next Michigan coach in the October when Rich Rod was still on board.  I couldn't think of anyone better that would actually accept the job for a reasonable amount of money.  Note: Schiano, Ferentz, Miles, and Fitzgerald among others have turned down the Michigan job.  I might ask Pete Carroll if he could recommend anyone, but a few phone calls of that nature should have been made a few weeks ago.

There should be a search.  Considering UM was going to make Harbaugh the highest paid coach in college football, that means UM can afford anyone.

There wont be a search.  Warde wants Sherrone, and I guarantee Harbaugh's deal with the Chargers includes the Chargers dumping so much $$$ into Minter's front-yard that it will be impossible for Minter to say no to the Chargers.

1) Kickass recruiter

2) Team loves him

3) Insane offensive line coach

4) Consistently schemed stuff open, execution was a bit lackluster this year for whatever reason (Blake injury, OL took time to gel, lack of meaningful competition until November, maybe bad coaching but I doubt it)

5) Lacks ego to look super clever and content with calling a billion runs in a row against PSU.

6) Won on the road against PSU on like 4 hours notice, beat Ohio State, won a trap game against Maryland

Does that guarantee he'll be a great head coach?  No.  Is it about as strong a resume you can get without him having P5 success as a head coach?  Yes.  And looking outside, the best head coaches you could get and fit culturally are...Fisch and DeBoer, basically.  Fisch would look like a total ass to leave.  I guess you could like, call Dan Lanning and make Phil Knight give him another raise.  Brohm's at his alma mater and the job he always wanted and he wasn't THAT successful at Purdue.  Chris Klieman's in his late 50s already.  Nobody else is even that intriguing to me except maaaaaaaaaaybe Leipold, but he just turned down Washington.  And is 59.

Is he that great of a recruiter especially in this NIL era? Our recruiting isn't great, especially on offense.

He's a great OL coach, I will for sure give you that.

I think he's an average OC, I'm not going to say any time it was bad was because of the players. I think the offense was worse this year than last year. I think you can find another coach to replicate what he did.

Yes this team loves him, but that's not a reason to hire a coach you might have for the next decade. Next year, a bunch of the team that contributed to these last few years will be gone.

You can hire Moore if every other better candidate says no, but he's not the best candidate. I don't think you hand it to him out of convenience.

The two best HC were taken this cycle.

There are some good ones still left, like Minter, but forget about Minter.  I guarantee part of Harbaugh's deal with the Chargers was to throw so much $$$ at Minter that he will most certainly go along with Harbaugh to the Chargers.

I hope you are correct.  You wont be.

Warde wants Sherrone, and I guarantee part of Harbaugh's deal with the Chargers is to offer Minter so much $$$ he's definitely going to leave with Harbaugh.
