'natty' is bad beer
'natty' is the word they use at 11 whiners
please don't use the word 'natty'
January 2nd, 2024 at 10:58 AM ^
Good luck with this. But you''re probably as likely to persuade people as trying to correct it's/its and there/they're.
The players use it so whatcha gonna do?
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:16 AM ^
What the hell? I can only call it "the national championship" or "the title game"? Sorry -- but it's 2024 and we aren't trying to use that many words when one word suffices.
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:20 AM ^
words have meanings.
natty
adjective
nat·ty ˈna-tē nattier; nattiest
Synonyms of natty : trimly neat and tidy : SMART
Ex: a natty dresser
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:23 AM ^
All words and thus all meanings are made up.
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:34 AM ^
kinda? I mean, we have dictionaries for a reason. In almost almost every professional field, whether it requires a degree or not, being very specific with words is critical.
words having specific meaning is key to accurate communication.
its cool you disagree, you do you and say whatever you’d like. call a helicopter a truck if you want.
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:38 AM ^
call a helicopter a truck if you want
If enough people did, that would be valid usage.
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:49 AM ^
Fair enough. And I’d still call it a helicopter.
🤷♂️
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:44 AM ^
Dictionaries are snapshots of a language at a period of time. English especially is always evolving. Professional vocab is a straw man example that was not relevant to the discussion.
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:54 AM ^
it isn’t a straw man. I didn’t exaggerate or distort anyone’s argument, then argue the distortion.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:04 PM ^
"its cool you disagree, you do you and say whatever you’d like. call a helicopter a truck if you want."
It's "it's cool," as in "it is cool," rather than the possessive "its."
However, as others are pointing out, meaning and usage are constantly shifting. So your technically incorrect use of "its" is transitioning from wrong to acceptable.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:30 PM ^
yea not going to double check and edit posts if my phone decides to throw gramma out the window. not sure what that had to do with what I typed either so …. have a +1
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:47 PM ^
It's the 21st century. Dictionaries are descriptive, not prescriptive. You'll see an entry for "natty = short-hand for national championship" in the not too distant future, as the entries catch up with the parlance of our times
January 2nd, 2024 at 2:24 PM ^
That's a point made by Prof. Anne Curzan, the dean of Michigan's LS&A and a scholar of language.
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:28 AM ^
I'm never going to be on the side of gatekeeping usage or correcting grammar online --
if you know what is meant, that should be enough to be fine with whatever word or grammar choice is made.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:00 PM ^
So if someone means to correct your grammar - and you understand that - then we are good? Got it. Thanks for this. The Michigan difference.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:47 PM ^
I looked up "natty," as in "natty dresser."
It's slang itself, 18th-century slang for "neat."
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:29 AM ^
It’s just a request, but saying national championship in relation to our football team seems pretty cool. Also, you don’t call a sorority a sore or Michigan, “Mish”, or “Mishie”, do you?
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:07 PM ^
And we don't call you X.
[Still, because some things do not get abbreviated doesn't mean all other things don't.]
BTW, I'm with you in feeling "natty" as shorthand gives "national championship" less respect. But, again, it's the players using it. And we do tend to follow players' usage. Bet.
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:21 AM ^
'natty' is the guy on the chiefs
coming straight home to me
January 2nd, 2024 at 10:49 AM ^
Negged for use of 'Natty'.
As XM said as I was posting this, Natty is a shitty beer and has no place in a Michigan fan's fridge...
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:54 AM ^
It's the beer with the taste for food. My food agrees. We all get along splendidly.
January 2nd, 2024 at 10:51 AM ^
negged for “NATTY”
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:29 AM ^
That whole "meaning" sounds like someone needed to come up with a meaning for the white people.
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:02 AM ^
Anyone know if there has been an update on Rayshaun Benny?
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:07 PM ^
I combed for this last night and couldn't find anything. Michigan listed him as questionable with a leg injury, he hurt his right leg. The submarine is diving. This info came off a ? site.
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:14 AM ^
While I dislike "natty" used in this way, it's been used by the players, and the official Facebook account of the football team.
I think it's valid use now.
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:25 AM ^
It's definitely valid and tryna gatekeep informal language is not just petty, it's downright frivolous. Be better, folks!
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:35 AM ^
Seems to be quite a contradiction: ham-fisted condescension mixed with trying to make Ohio buckeye Trailer trash words, normalized.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:42 PM ^
ham-fisted condescension
tit for tat, my dude
Ohio buckeye Trailer trash words
used by our players and AD. not a great look lumping 'em into that category IMO
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:37 AM ^
I dont think anyone’s trying to “gate-keep” it and prevent its usage.
it just sounds silly to many (most?) of us … people are free to type whatever they want. Others are free to neg away.
I’m just saying …. “national title” is like the third thing that comes to mind when I hear/read “natty”
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:42 AM ^
I dont think anyone’s trying to “gate-keep” it and prevent its usage
Is that not what the negging is for?
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:47 AM ^
I thought it was “I disagree with your statement.”
you take someone negging your post as “you should not be allowed” to type those words?
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:50 AM ^
Yes. Negs are for policing the board. I believe that actually has been stated by Brian in the past, though it's not official policy.
If you simply have a differing opinion, you can just make a post that engages in debate.
January 2nd, 2024 at 11:57 AM ^
well, then you have a bigger fight here. pretty sure most people use the negs to disagree, not to try to coerce language as you suggest (which I am vehemently against)
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:12 PM ^
That does explain why some of you people go around negging everyone all the time. I think it's poor form but sadly for me I guess there's a growing number of people shifting the culture here such that negging someone's perfectly valid and respectful post is acceptable practice.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:26 PM ^
I’d argue that attempts to coerce language is a far worse slope to be sliding down but to each their own.
I’d also argue that negs used for disagreement has common on the blog since I’ve been here so … 10 years or so?
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:32 PM ^
I wasn't suggesting that people should be trying to coerce language.
As for how people use negs, I think different people have held different assumptions. I certainly don't get negged by every user every time someone has a different belief or opinion. There are a handful of people who seem to neg a lot and now I understand better why. Thanks for clearing it up for me.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:41 PM ^
Everyone here agrees... bad beer deserves a Neg... which is where XM was going? If the team drinks bad beer, I might reconsider.
I appreciate the discussion. Coffee is good this morning for some reason.

A discussion as old as time, but outting trolls is the best use case. It isn't the opposite of up voting, which is your point. There is a standard of posting that Ron points to in the link above. The comment section there is a great example of the trollish behavior not mentioned. I don't know where the "You Suck!" cheer came from, but I think it is a reflection of what you are pointing toward here.January 2nd, 2024 at 12:11 PM ^
Yeah, I'm with you.
Disagreement seems to me to need a statement of disagreement. E.g., "I think you're wrong and here's why."
Though I know others disagree, and like to use a downvote to express disagreement, it feels less like discussion than attack.
