I’ll be curious if Vandagriff ends up at Oklahoma or FSU.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:16 PM ^
Guys like him have to go someplace where they're guaranteed to start. He's out of time and can't risk losing a qb competition.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:56 PM ^
JT Daniels vibes.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:33 PM ^
why would anyone go to FSU
December 4th, 2023 at 2:12 PM ^
Edit: n/m
December 4th, 2023 at 2:14 PM ^
He entered the portal this afternoon.
Edit: This was about Brock Vandagriff
December 4th, 2023 at 2:15 PM ^
Sam Huard is an interesting case. Tons of respect for what he did. I am willing to bet he will be successful if he gets a call up to an FBS program after this year.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:36 PM ^
He should probably go back to UW, right?
December 5th, 2023 at 9:41 AM ^
He was mediocre at a FCS school. 2200 at 60% and 18/10. Meh
December 4th, 2023 at 2:16 PM ^
Thank you for this post - it's always fun to look back at "sure things" and see they're anything but.
That said - JJ, Williams and Ewers in the same class is pretty damn impressive.
A BIG part of UM's success has been keeping most of the team in college and out of the transfer portal. Development and continuity = win.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:20 PM ^
Caleb Williams is ok also.
December 4th, 2023 at 3:53 PM ^
I mentioned him - and agree.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:19 PM ^
Legitimately had to Google "Brock Vandagriff," both to find out where he was and to assure myself it's not a computer generated name in an NCAA football game.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:23 PM ^
When teams develop a 3 star player, even they will transfer at the first opportunity.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:26 PM ^
What's crazy is there is a world out there where Ewers doesn't transfer from OSU and it was him throwing to Harrison Jr and Ebuka. Not sure UM gets the best of them in that world.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:35 PM ^
Doubtful. Ewers never wanted to be at OSU; he's a Texas kid that always wanted to be at Texas. He went to OSU for a year to get around the state of Texas's NIL restrictions (at the time at least, it was something like high schoolers couldn't get NIL deals), but he was always going to bolt at the first opportunity. Played OSU for a nice payday...
December 4th, 2023 at 3:14 PM ^
So, assuming that he actually got paid whatever he was promised for his limited time at Ohio State only to leave immediately once the check cleared and he could go to his preferred team, at what point do the boosters footing these large bills start dialing back the spending after it becomes clear that the players they're buying are literally providing zero team output for their programs?
Or do these people just have so much money that they can piss away $50 million a year and not even blink an eye?
December 4th, 2023 at 3:30 PM ^
It depends on whether it's deductible or not. There is a dollar amount where people would much rather pay for something they enjoy than pay the IRS.
December 4th, 2023 at 4:47 PM ^
mitchewr, I don't get it at all. Some people have too much money, that's the only way I can justify this stuff.
Maybe it's an ego thing - impress the cool kids at the alumni reunion. But seriously, do I give a crap about some rich dude who paid a kid to play football at my school? Nope.
It's all kind of creepy - "I gave an 18 year old kid a million bucks to be my friend and play ball at my school so I can flex to my frat/B-School bros."
Think about it - some rich dude (dudes?) threw $1M+ at Ewers - a teenager with a stupid mullet and overly involved parent, who happily took their money and bolted to UT. To me, it just proves that being rich does not necessarily mean you're smart. He/they got played by a dumb hick teenager from Texas.
December 4th, 2023 at 6:59 PM ^
Come on, you wouldn’t be impressed if you met the donor who paid JJ enough to come back next year? Bullshit
December 5th, 2023 at 1:30 PM ^
I promise you, I ABSOLUTELY would not.
Love JJ, don't give a crap about a guy who throws money at him. If a guy made a point of telling me this information about himself at a party, I'd laugh at his desperate need to feel important.
The entire concept of bowing to kiss the ring of rich donors is medieval to me - no thanks.
Not trying to cast stones - just my POV. If you feel differently, that's cool.
December 9th, 2023 at 5:43 AM ^
I agree, I am not overly impressed with the money they spend. But, I am grateful that someone is spending it. Because it does keep us, at the very least, competent in the era of NIL.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:28 PM ^
So, are you saying Michigan's been "stuck" with JJ - or, vice-versa?
If that's the case, sign me up. Culture, development, experience, etc. - ALL are critical. But, if you're hopping from one squad to another - relationships and bonding isn't an easy thing to do.
Go Blue!
December 4th, 2023 at 3:59 PM ^
Amazinblu if you're referring to my post - vice-versa. Having JJ spend his career at Michigan has been a gigantic part of our success.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:28 PM ^
Isn't Drake May also in this class? Also, Jaxson Dart and Jalen Milroe are in this class, so sort of a crazy loaded class compared to, say the Drew Allar class where it's him and Cade Klubnik and not much else.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:38 PM ^
I would file Allar and Klubnik under "not much else" as well. Klubnik is talented but I'm not sure Dabo can bring back the glory days with his current staff and philosophy.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:31 PM ^
Ah, free agency.
Also of note, only one of them is getting appropriately prepared to run a pro offense.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:32 PM ^
Sam Huard? Related to Brock Huard?
Edit: A little Google search revealed that he is Damon's son, Brock's nephew. Good pedigree.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:48 PM ^
Just wanted to take a moment and reflect that all the questions about Michigan's rotating players at multiple positions might have something to do with transfer portal considerations.
Also freshness, and maybe some packages down the road, and maybe people actually, you know, deserve to see the field.
But, yeah. Come to Michigan and you actually play.

And win championships.

THOSE WHO STAY
December 4th, 2023 at 7:29 PM ^
This really adds more meaning with the age of the transfer portal and all.
December 4th, 2023 at 3:40 PM ^
Huard transferred to FCS Cal Poly?! Now that's a student athlete.
December 4th, 2023 at 6:28 PM ^
For some, they're in the portal but that's not a guarantee right?
It could be a way to increase their NIL negotiation leverage.
