Mark Stoops will NOT be the next Texas A&M Head Coach
Per Thamel on Twitter, who I will not link, Texas A&M will not hire Kentucky Coach Mark Stoops.
Is Michigan's own Sherrone Moore a target? Not sure he's quite there yet, and there are other potential programs, with UCLA allegedly opening up soon. Maybe Michigan extends Moore a 'head coach in waiting' offer given his resilience over this season.

Pocket Pete just repeating what Stoops said himself on X
November 26th, 2023 at 5:43 AM ^
Perfect nickname.
November 26th, 2023 at 9:00 AM ^
I like to call him Thamel toe lol
November 26th, 2023 at 3:39 AM ^
UCLA is not opening up
November 26th, 2023 at 3:50 AM ^
WTF. These hack reporters can’t get it right. Par for the course
November 26th, 2023 at 4:22 AM ^
Maybe Ryan Day put his name out there.
November 26th, 2023 at 6:22 AM ^
Ha ha ha. All SEC teams already have their own PI firms. Day will sure have more slush money to pay players, more than he did in OSU. But he will have his teeth kicked in every year by other SEC teams. Besides, SEC teams are not going to play ball like B1G teams would to gang up on a team.
November 26th, 2023 at 8:37 AM ^
Day is 1-3 against Michigan. He's also 1-3 against top 5 opponents (ie: playoffs). So math tells us that he is 1-6 against the best.
That's approaching Frames Janklin territory...
November 26th, 2023 at 9:20 AM ^
I don't think Day leaves for the Texas A&M job but look out if the Florida job opens up. Weak SEC East division, elite recruiting hotbed.
November 26th, 2023 at 4:26 AM ^
Fisch has set himself up for a good gig. The work he's put in at Arizona is excellent. I'm so glad MSU hired Johnathan Smith and not Jedd Fisch. Fisch at A&M might be a good fit.
November 26th, 2023 at 8:39 AM ^
I'd like to see him make UA a scary program - more scary than they are now. It won't happen for lack of support, but it would be fun. If he does stay, it'll be a Kansas/Kentucky situation - good for a couple of years, but then falls off. Repeat. Lack of support would doom him, eventually.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:51 AM ^
Jedd is my top choice for when Harbs leaves, at least right now he is. Just slightly ahead of Sherrone, but it matters that Jedd has run a program himself & resurrected said program. I just love to watch them play.
November 26th, 2023 at 4:52 AM ^
FUCK THAMEL
November 26th, 2023 at 5:39 AM ^
Had a feeling the other thread was incorrect when that wasn’t being picked up by any of the major outlets.
November 26th, 2023 at 5:48 AM ^
TAMU might throw to third base for a pickoff
November 26th, 2023 at 7:13 AM ^
Ryan Day, I hear College Station is nice as they never play Michigan.
November 26th, 2023 at 7:26 AM ^
Ryan Day, get ready to learn A&M, buddy
November 26th, 2023 at 7:31 AM ^
TAMU fans going for a riiiiide last night.
November 26th, 2023 at 7:40 AM ^
TAMU could get Third Base if they want him. But I'm betting they don't. Even in the state of Texas you need to beat your biggest rival.
November 26th, 2023 at 8:12 AM ^
TAMUs biggest rival in Texas is Prairie View A&M.
November 26th, 2023 at 7:41 AM ^
A&M has reasonable expectations. It's a great place for coaches to settle in, develop talent and take some lumps while they learn on the job.
November 26th, 2023 at 7:42 AM ^
Texas A&M fans were largely in revolt last night.
Now, I am sure they haven't the foggiest what to think, if this is the case.
It's funny to watch another team, especially one that truly seems to believe that money alone will solve the problem, go through this actually.
November 26th, 2023 at 7:45 AM ^
Day and Frames now licking their chops getting massive pay raises for themselves
November 26th, 2023 at 8:36 AM ^
And Dabo.
Dabo is a wildcard here. He's pissed at the "ungrateful" Clemson fans and ready to get out of dodge knowing he's not getting 3 generational QBs in a row again.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:24 AM ^
He is a Bama boy waiting for Nick to ride off into the sunset.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:31 AM ^
If I was Bama or A&M (or literally any other P5 school, especially in the SEC) I wouldn't touch him with a 40 foot pole. The game has completely passed him by in the age of NIL.
November 26th, 2023 at 7:46 AM ^
He is not ready to stoops that low
November 26th, 2023 at 7:57 AM ^
IIRC, every one of the “head coaches in waiting” has gone on to coach… somewhere else. Frames was one of them, right? It never works. It is just a clue to other schools “you REALLY wanna hire THIS guy.” (Which they all already know with Coach Moore)
November 26th, 2023 at 8:38 AM ^
Exactly, it also causes nepotism and its just a terrible hiring practice.
Fuck any job or position "in waiting."
If you want to keep Sherrone Moore, pay him like a head coach. Give him $3M/year.
November 26th, 2023 at 7:58 AM ^
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha
November 26th, 2023 at 8:01 AM ^
I don't know what's going to happen in College Station, but Stoops is 56 and already makes $9M/yr at a really cushy gig.
I think a lot of people are rightfully wary of the A&M job.
As for Moore, I fully support whatever he chooses to do. If he feels the time is right to strike out and step up, great. If he decides to hitch his wagon to Harbaugh a little while longer, that's great too. He has earned it all
November 26th, 2023 at 8:05 AM ^
Shocking that no one is running to coach Texas Average & Mid University.
November 26th, 2023 at 8:06 AM ^
I can't say it in enough ways. A&M needs to make waves with a hire. You don't pay a coach $77 million to go away unless you plan something major. Stoops, great coach, but not what A&M needs.
November 26th, 2023 at 8:14 AM ^
I think they need a developer of talent and a disciplined coach who acts like a rigorous project manager over his staff. Jimbo was not these things.
November 26th, 2023 at 8:11 AM ^
I know he’s said he has no interest, but the obvious choice for TA&M is Urban Meyer. The oil-rich Aggie boosters won’t give a damn about Meyer’s ethical issues, and Urban can rehabilitate his reputation after his debacle in Jacksonville.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:21 AM ^
This seems like the most logical end to this.
The only other path I could see being acceptable to that donor base would somehow pry Mike Gundy from Ok State or hire a top coordinator from Alabama or Georgia.
Even getting a guy like Liepold from Kansas or Elko from Duke seems like a stretch for their expectations.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:30 AM ^
Lane Kiffin would also seem like a choice for A&M. He has done a real nice job with Ole Miss resources. Not going to beat the Bama or LSU's of the world often with that job.
But again, already making $9M a year and less pressure there.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:36 AM ^
Money runs everything in College Station. If Colorado hadn't had their epic second half collapse this season I think Deion would have been a serious candidate. He knows Texas, can recruit, and won't be bothered by the millions of dollars handed out to his players by the rich oil boosters. But it's clear he's not ready for a job that big yet. I'd say Urban and Kiffin are the best choices, and maybe Hugh Freeze if the other two both decline. I was scratching my head last night when it was reported Stoops would get the job, he was not the right fit there. Think they dodged a bullet, for now...
November 26th, 2023 at 8:19 AM ^
This feels like a “we were going to hire him but holy shit the public reaction has been awful and we’re going back on it” move
November 26th, 2023 at 8:55 AM ^
Is this what’s happened? It seemed so certain yesterday Stoops was going there.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:07 AM ^
I think this is spot on. TexasAgs (Mgoblog-ish) reported it being done last night. There was a huge wave of not so favorables being sent over the web and that may have played a role.
November 26th, 2023 at 9:00 AM ^
I hope Day gets the job and he takes Brian Hartline and Larry Johnson with him. OSU is still recruiting at a better level that us, so that trio needs to either leave together or break up like the Beatles.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:09 AM ^
If Day goes to A&M, Urbz might go back to OSU. He is fanatical about the Buckeyes. That would be the only job he would come out of retirement for.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:39 AM ^
I could see him going to ND as well. He always called it his dream job. And yeah, if Day went to A&M OSU would call Urban first, then Fickell. I think both of those coaches are better than soft ass Day. Be careful what you wish for.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:34 AM ^
Moore ain’t goin anywhere. He’s gonna be named the head coach at Michigan after this season.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:22 AM ^
How can this be? just yesterday, we had posts that two click-bait-rumor mongers on the interweb had declared this would be so. Now we have one that denies this? /S
November 26th, 2023 at 11:27 AM ^
I really don't know who A&M will turn to. There are not a lot of prospects out there.
As for Moore it would not be a bad thing for him (assuming JH is staying a long time) to go get his feet wet running an entire program from top to bottom. Being a substitute for a few weeks on game day is very different than being the CEO for 365 days a year.
This is not me saying I want him to leave but Lloyd Carr was a one off and a very veteran coach by the time he took over; Moore is a risk we don't really know what he would be like as a HC full time. Would like to see whomever is the next UM coach have a history of you know ... head coaching.
November 26th, 2023 at 12:33 PM ^
People seem to forget (or ignore) that Carr had been an assistant for 15 years, DC for 8 years, and Associate HC for 5 years before he succeeded Moeller. He was as prepared as you could possibly expect.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:36 AM ^
Why not Brian Hartline to Texas A&M?
I think that would be a super smart move honestly.
