WSJ: Big Ten Source says league "will" defer to the NCAA

I don't think I saw this on the board anywhere. This is from a WSJ article below that I saw on reddit. Emphasis mine:

A person close to the Big Ten has said the conference will defer to the NCAA, which is conducting its own investigation. Such probes often take months if not years.

However, the conference is under pressure from Michigan’s rivals to take swift action. The Big Ten could take the unusual step of sanctioning Michigan under its sportsmanship policy, which empowers the commissioner to level punishment if he determines an “offensive action” has occurred.

This runs contrary to what Michigan insiders seem to believe so we may find out today who's right. If you piece together the snippets out there, perhaps Michigan left the meeting with Pettiti feeling like the league was fully going to drop the hammer and maybe Pettiti left the meeting and concluded they have no basis for punishment preempting any investigation. Could explain the disconnect. We shall see.

Legal strategies don’t get leaked without the leak being the strategy. Michigan leaked they were gonna go scorched earth if Harbaugh was suspended, B1G backed down.

I am sure that Ono explained, in the nicest terms, the fact that the conference was violating its own rules, that M has lawyers that will move quickly to preserve the status quo if a "sportsmanship" suspension is issued based on an incomplete investigation, and that dropping the hammer on the conference's best prospect for a natty would not be a good business move.

If Petiti lets these people bulldoze him, he is headed down a path of no return. If he has any kind of brain, he is up nights sweating. At the very least, Michigan needs to make a full-court press in the media to expose all of the contradictions and hypocrisy--the long history--that accompanies this story, even before we get to the major injustices, and corruption, that make college football the sick man that it has become.

So Thames said Monday that Jim would be suspended, now he’s back tracking and saying he’ll be suspended by the end of the week… geez, correct me if I’m wrong, but the punishment doesn’t fit the crime right?? Low level staff member, even if he broke the rules, would be level 2 violation, which doesn’t include a mid season suspension for the head coach right? Oh wait, cheeseburger gate, but that was self imposed correct?
