MSU football news: I'm not entirely sure what this means but it sounds bad
I guess this is why you don't let message boards run your athletic department
September 29th, 2023 at 11:31 PM ^
Seems bad to quite bad.
September 30th, 2023 at 12:27 AM ^
I didn’t think this could get any worse for them. I almost feel bad. Almost.

Mork was right. Pride does come before the fall.

Staee priee is very strong

Almost like pulling your money out of ENRON after the shit hit the fan.
Sparty is overly prideful to the point they believe they can hang with top 10 programs.
September 30th, 2023 at 12:32 PM ^
Are you kidding? They think they ARE a top 10 program.
September 30th, 2023 at 12:54 PM ^
RIP BOZO

Nah f them and their tunnel 8
September 30th, 2023 at 10:58 AM ^
It can always become worse.
September 30th, 2023 at 12:37 PM ^
No, I do feel for the players who are losing money out of their pockets. I don’t feel for their fans, and I don’t feel for 7L, but I do feel for the players. Not their fault 7L thinks harassing a sexual assault activist is a good idea.

Barnett called a team meeting after their plane landed in Iowa to inform the players.
September 30th, 2023 at 11:31 AM ^
Man, that is some bad writing for a supposedly-professional writer. For example,"[s]he says players started receiving emails about their deals while on the flight to Iowa, sources tell Dahlgren." Uhm, "she" is Dahlgren. "Sources" do not need to tell her what she herself says.
September 30th, 2023 at 12:29 PM ^
what kind of NIL deals are these, if they can be cancelled by one party at any time?
September 29th, 2023 at 11:34 PM ^
Well run program that Sparty brand is.
September 29th, 2023 at 11:36 PM ^
Hello transfer portal!!!!
September 29th, 2023 at 11:38 PM ^
so if you're a kid playing for sparty and the financial rug suddenly gets pulled out from underneath you, are you even suiting up tomorrow?
i know we'll all be heartbroken if a bunch of starters decide to keep their redshirt and sit. probably won't happen, but i would not be losing sleep about sparty sinking further. after the tunnel incident they went from rival to 'hope that ship sinks to the bottom of davey jones' locker'

MSU players are currently experiencing temporary layoffs and easy credit ripoffs … Good Times!

"There's principalities in this shit."
September 30th, 2023 at 12:02 AM ^
I think some have already decided to sit out thus this announcement. Guys who were signed to deals have decided to say “Nah, dawg, I’m out.”
September 30th, 2023 at 12:06 AM ^
I immediately went to draftkings to bet on Iowa. Iowa -6.5, under 40.5 parlay +126. Free money.
September 30th, 2023 at 12:22 AM ^
Up to -10.5 now.
September 30th, 2023 at 7:37 AM ^
Wait. This cancelled deal made the line move 4 points???
September 30th, 2023 at 7:43 AM ^
No I bought the line down and the under up because it’s parlay.
September 30th, 2023 at 11:27 AM ^
That makes sense.
September 30th, 2023 at 8:32 AM ^
That 4 point swing is big, but the game basically turned into paid NIL players vs. amateurs.
September 30th, 2023 at 12:41 AM ^
I just did the same, but the odds have changed and Iowa is now -10.5, at least on FanDuel.
September 30th, 2023 at 8:27 AM ^
Sure sounds like a certain bet. With Iowa's high-flying offense, the Hawkeyes will score two FG's and a safety putting a jaw-dropping 8 points on the board, safely covering the spread.
September 30th, 2023 at 3:14 AM ^
"...after the tunnel incident..." I hear you, but I was there when they tried to break Denard's neck.
September 30th, 2023 at 8:39 AM ^
Maybe. Just maybe the next time they try to attack another teams players they will think to themselves . . . . and think? "I wonder what happens after I jump this person"
I think we all have the answer now.
September 30th, 2023 at 6:28 AM ^
Exactly, fuck them. John Jansen even made the point last year after the tunnel that this rivalry was never like this even 20 years ago. It was more back and forth ribbing sibling type rivalry back then. You got way too many fans and people at the school with the mentality of this guy that everything bad that happens to them is somehow Michigan's fault, and it's made everything real ugly.
September 30th, 2023 at 6:40 AM ^
that's somebody that needs some serious therapy. and medication.
i think what happens is that there is a tendency for some people to put all their anger and angst and disappointment in one metaphorical 'gun', and point it at a single thing that they can punch or lash out at over and over. i think it happens in sports and politics most commonly and it reflects a complete abandonment of rational thought or grace or most any other good human character trait.

Who goes home in an ambulance?
September 30th, 2023 at 8:25 AM ^
The ambulance driver? Maybe?
September 30th, 2023 at 11:47 AM ^
Nursing home residents.
(I suspect it depends on the medical transport options available, but I've seen residents multiple come into my mother-in-law's nursing home in ambulances while we were visiting her. And a few go out, too.)
September 30th, 2023 at 1:53 PM ^
Discharges to home are done that way too, if the patient's condition requires it. When we stopped being able to transfer my father into the family car I wasn't sure how we'd get him home. Discharge from an SNF, we were expected to arrange wheelchair transportation through our insurance company's program. Discharge from the hospital, they sent him home in a bed.

Top Fan!!!
September 30th, 2023 at 6:41 AM ^
This is going to have repercussions outside MSU football. It may reveal a real hole--an untenable component of the structure that NIL is moving to. If your players 'work' for the university but get paid by some shaky, ungoverned entities outside it. . . and they pull out the rug. . . You could have teams going belly-up--suffering serious chaos--mid-season. What happens if MSU can't field a team for several games? Games forfeited? If this is happening simultaneously at several schools during a deep recession?
September 30th, 2023 at 7:13 AM ^
Or don’t you get a lawyer? I thought NIL deals were contracts, can’t imagine there is a clause saying we will not honor any payments if the coach is caught jacking off vs the player getting into trouble.
September 30th, 2023 at 7:15 AM ^
Any good lawyer always includes a jacking off clause.

That's fine--in America everyone should have a lawyer assigned at birth!. But now tens of thousands of such deals are being struck across an unregulated landscape where college students are potentially embroiled in disputes, walking away from deals and schools because coaches lured them with connections to donors. . . ? Messy AF.
Meanwhile, the entity that brought them there and continues to profit from them still hasn't been required to pony up. The whole thing continues to be a diversion from that simple fact.
Players need to get paid, as Jim says. Everything else should happen far from athletic departments, with students simply having to comply with certain rules and submit deals for legal review.

"That's fine--in America everyone should have a lawyer assigned at birth!."
SciFi plot status: Hatched.
But why not at conception?
September 30th, 2023 at 8:53 AM ^
I guess that depends on a few things. Do you think a certain school is smart enough to do contracts that benefit both parties involved? Makes me happy it seems UM is doing this stuff correctly.
September 30th, 2023 at 9:10 AM ^
No, but I’m sure they have for cause and no cause termination clauses. Fairy common in most agreements.
