Well now they have to and I wouldn't be upset
This is starting to feel like a video game.
Thee Coastal Conference (plus Louisville, Pitt, and sometimes notre dame)
We're giving Syracuse a pass since NYS touches the ocean.

Bi-Coastal Curious
I really hope the big ten wises up and adds them + WSU and OSU. Stop destroying historic rivalries and keep some form of college football intact!
OSU is already in the B1G!
The REAL osu
Oklahoma State is in the Big 12 I thought???
Who can even keep track anymore...
Don't you mean "Thee Real osu"?

Is that poster from thee locker room in Columbus?
I thought creating a poster was a compulsory project for a Masters Degree there. It seems like this guy could be on his way to the Commencement Ceremony and he’s just showing off his work.
No thanks.
Wazzu is way too broke to join the B1G. It will keep the Apple Cup with UW and live a more sustainable life in the Mountain West with its actual peer programs.
Exactly. No ill will toward Oregon State and Wazzu but both programs only have 35,000 seat stadiums. They will probably excel better in the Mountain West. As will Stanford and Cal who have bigger stadiums but only regularly average about the same.
I realize this is football driven but Stanford's sports other than football and men's bball will annihilate the mountain west. It will be interesting to see where they land and if they are able to maintain such a high level in all their sports.

Stanford and Cal have a better chance of filling those seats if they join the B1G.

Northwestern:
There are painful Oregon State and Washington State details in the last paragraph here:

OSU and Wazzu's financial woes have everything to do with fulfilling their academic missions as agricultural and engineering schools (rather than business or health care). Notable that their lack of financial power is the primary reason to deprive them of a conference affiliation that would benefit their balance sheet. All this to say that there is no motivation behind these conference realignments besides concentrating the largest amount of broadcast revenues among the smallest number of schools.
Ironic that the schools that need the financial boost most are not financially sound enough for the financial windfall of joining a financially healthy conference.
Also painful, the last sentence: "Falling into a non-power conference could be devistating financially for both programs."
I'm deviated about the dovasting duvostation they face.

Washington is broke as well …

We can thank Larry Scott for that. He Told everyone to spend cause the tv money was coming , Bill Moos for sure spent, and now we are here. Fuck Larry Scott
All 4 schools are god awful at football and men's basketball.

Thad,
Stanford has more NCAA championships, Olympic Athletes, and director’s cups than any other university. Stanford has also had some great years in football and basketball. They are the premier athletic university in the nation. Cal probably has more Nobel laureates than any other FBS university. Cal also has some championship teams now and then.
WSU and OrSU can go a separate way.
August 8th, 2023 at 12:50 AM ^
Nobody is disputing that their olympic sports are great. Stanford football has five Pac 10/12 titles since 1971. Stanford men's basketball has been to the NCAA Tournament once since 2008. Cal football has one Pac 10/12 title since 1975. Cal men's basketball has been to the NCAA tournament three times since 2010.
You did a statistically weird thing of picking a statistically favorable year - 1971 - only to prove a point.
Stanford won all 5 of those pac titles beginning 1992, only Oregon, Washington, and USC have won more in that span. Even if we add that 20 year drought back to 1972, 5 championships drops to 5th behind UCLA, who was dominant in the 80s.
Ultimately, it's less about performance and more about the market. Even when they're good, nobody watches or cares.
God awful take. That’s like adding two more Rutgers to this conference. Oregon State and Wazzu are dead weight and add NOTHING of value.

I’m not saying WSU should even get a sniff from big ten, not in the slightest. But to say they bring nothing is false.

I just don’t get why they don’t get a serious look from big 12.

Oregon State and Wazzu have fans that give a shit, which is more than you can say for Rutger.
August 7th, 2023 at 11:14 PM ^
Cal and Standford in, MSU and Rutgers out. Perfect B1G.
The Cal, Stanford, UCLA, and USC should definitely keep their rivalries. Cal and Stanford should join the Big 10.
I don't see how that helps. A 22-team conference is no longer a collegiate conference. It's a pro league, and all rivalries would suffer from the scheduling nightmare that would ensue.
If the Big Ten were to wise up, the better move would be to scrap this whole West Coast expansion altogether. The whole thing feels rushed, and I feel like parties on both sides are going to regret it. Not as bad as Rutgers, but I don't think this will be viewed as a positive in the long-term.
The word "Exploratory" has been used so much in the last 2 weeks!
Still less than its use in over 45 annual physicals.
August 7th, 2023 at 11:44 PM ^
I'm so thankful I've never had anyone use that word in association with my body yet.
August 7th, 2023 at 11:57 PM ^
I guess the young ladies haven't either, sad.
If exploring is required to fulfill the mission, count me in…
In this instance, I will anything necessary and “take one for the team.”

EGJ -
while I appreciate this gif as much as the next hetero guy, is it really apropos in a thread where we're talking about excluding not only cougars but beavers as well?
this one feels like it won't have legs. They bring so little to a new conference, especially considering the logistics.
August 7th, 2023 at 11:40 PM ^
Agreed. I think the ACC is in panic mode.
August 7th, 2023 at 11:50 PM ^
Disagree. They're looking for a couple smart kids to do the homework for the rest of the conference.
The smart kids that somehow ended up in the PAC 4?
Every school has some goofy moments in its history. But as a band geek, here's some trivia about the Stanford band in the 1980's:
They had a keg at band rehearsals and a sign at the front of the band hall that read, "No fat chicks."
They once performed a halftime show that attempted to portray a penis going back and forth into a vagina.
WIlliam D. Revelli of Michigan wrote to the president of Stanford to say their band was an absolute disgrace.
That was all long ago. I'm sure times have changed. But I have always had a sort of negative vibe about them since.
