[Title edited] OT: Mother of OSU WR Carnell Tate killed in drive by shooting.
He was expected to contribute a lot this season. Sad to hear.
The mother died, not Tate, right?
Yes. Still horribly sad. But I hope mods will at least edit the title. Much love to Tate's family.
I'll immediately get the title fixed.
First, though, condolences to the family.
This story is very sad, but this topic has an egregious error: it was his mom who passed not Tate himself.
I mis-read. Mods please delete
R.I.P. to the mom and GOD bless the family.
Looks like it's his mother that was killed (?). Also, still terrible. RIP. I hope Carnell has the strength to get through this.
Man, I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. I hope OSU has adequate support services in place.
I would tell this kid "go beat Michigan's ass and win a fucking ship - live for each moment - it will make your mother proud for you to succeed."
We can wish well for others and still want the good guys to win.
Highly doubt he needs to think of anything football related at this time, let alone Michigan, as he and his family grieve.
Just horrible. Hope he has the support he needs.
I would tell him to go grieve his mother, be with his family, as that’s all that matters right now instead of focusing on a football rivalry game but to each their own I guess
OSU is probably the best place for him to be right now to get that support. The program is run by a guy that lost a father at a young age and has put a lot of work into focusing on mental health. There are guys within and around the program that have dealt with loss in similar fashion, two current players lost their mothers.
As a Buckeye fan, I hope the kid takes as much time as he needs to process this the right way and move forward with his life without it weighing on him. Football can wait if needed.
That's one area where I have to give a lot of credit to Ryan Day, because he appears to place a very big emphasis on mental health awareness with his players and taking care of that aspect of their lives. There was an article that came out I'd say within the last year or two with Day opening up on losing his father to suicide when he was young, the impact its had on him, and the steps he takes with his team to ensure they can take care of the mental struggles they face.
I don't say this to suggest that Tate has mental health issues, but losing a parent like this can cause several lifetime's worth of trauma on even the most hardened souls among us, so I'm sure Day has had the best possible resources in place to help his players face these issues as they arise.
That's my thinking as well. While Tate may be completely in control of his thoughts currently, things like this can have a lingering effect and trigger issues down the road, especially if things are brushed under the rug so to speak to try and move on with your life. I'm sure Day has already and will continue to make sure he knows every option is on the table for him, the help is there however he needs it.
Will/would Michigan do something at 'the game' for this?
Only an actual journalist would abuse a headline like that...
Who do you work for?
That is horrible news for the young man and his family. Prayers to them, and I hope he can find some peace and healing over time.
Terrible news
I don’t know how you get through something like that. Your mother torn away from you just as you are becoming a man.
My dad lost his mother 54 years ago to cancer. Even at 70 part of him is still a 16-year-old who misses his mother. It’s a sadness that never really goes away.
Poor kid.
As someone who lost their mother at 11, it never goes away. I don't believe it is suppose to, it is part of your history and story. I am in my late 40s and have several photos of me and my mother up in the house. It brings a happiness and a sadness that most people who have lost someone understand.
It doesn't ever go away. My father-in-law's dad was the Georgia sharecropper who died in the famous Rosa Lee Ingram civil rights case back in the late 1940s. Losing his dad as a youth, and especially under those circumstances, haunted my FIL his entire life.
Just looked up this tragic, painful and sad history...
I didn't know anything about this important moment in American history.
Incredibly sad. I hope he has a good group around him at school to help him through this and keep after his goals and dreams.
No words. Peace to him and his family.
Pointless, senseless violence destroys another life. So sad.
This is terrible. So sad.
Condolences to him and his family and a not so subtle reminder that at the end of the day there’s so much more to life than a game. Treasure each moment with your loved ones. Life is like a vapor. Short and fleeting.
I Know this kid. Great kid. On a side note, when is Michigan going to address the continued pipeline of south florida express kids to Ohio. It is really hurting Michigan to have these kids continue to go to Ohio in droves. What is Shoelace doing that they are letting 5 kids from this program of 5 star and high 4 star just continue to go Ohio. This accounts for much of Hartline's success.
The upvote is the part about knowing the kid personally and being a great kid. May want to save the recruiting talk for a different thread. Just my 2 cents.
It's cool that you know him, but this is an odd comment.
1) Michigan has Elias Rudolph from this class, from Deerfield Beach (hometown of Denard Robinson)
2) Ohio State has 2 commits in this class (only one more than UM) and 2 commits from South Florida (others from Central FL, though) in the 2023 class.
3) Keon Sabb and JJ McCarthy are both South FL kids, technically. McCarthy is an IMG product just like Tate.
4) Tate is really a Chicago kid. He was at Marist High School in Chicago and transferred to IMG in 2021. I would imagine someone that knew him would think of him as from Chicago but I guess not.
5) Saying it "accounts for much of Hartline's success" makes no sense. Stroud (CA), Fleming (PA), JSN (TX), Garrett Wilson (TX), Chris Olave (CA)...none of them are from FL. Neither are any of the other major skill guys. Petit-Frere, Brian Snead, Marcus Crowley are the only major offensive commits from FL who would've seen the field by now, and other than Petit-Frere you couldn't pick those dudes out of a lineup. Snead got kicked off the team.
All this ranting aside, I hope he finds strength in friends, family, and teammates and gets through this. I can't imagine what he's feeling right now—no kid should have to go through this.
South Florida Express is the top 7v7 team in the area. I wasnt saying South Florida and IMG Is not in South Florida.
Got it. So who are the South Florida Express players that have made an impact for OSU?
Why did you write, "was" expected?
That was because the o.p. originally thought Carnell Tate was killed in a drive-by, the title was later corrected.
oof.
I appreciate this thread and the reactions. It's a sad thing and I just knew I'd see compassionate reactions around here.
As a side note, the 11W thread is about 90% compassionate. It took all of one post for a dude to get political and for warnings to have to go out from mods. It's nice to not have that.
We have our moments here as well.
We are humans first, Americans second, and a distant third, rivals.
College football is awesome. I love it irrationally. But I also know that it’s just a game. (Admittedly, it took some maturation on my part to get to this point.)
Carnell Tate suffered an immeasurably cruel and crushing loss. My heart hurts for him and his family. No person should have to go through what that poor kid is going through now. What jersey he puts on is utterly irrelevant. He’s a human being in pain.
Family is above and beyond everything else. Football in the end is a frivolous sport that humans enjoy on a weekend. It’s also impactful to solidify the strongest bond on earth as well, family. What Tate is going through is past a boundary that doesn’t matter to any Buckeye, Wolverine, or any team. Tragic a life was taken and dearly hope he can recover from this. I pray for him and his family to get better from this tragic event
Well this sucks. I feel for Tate and wish he and his family can find some solace to move on when the time is right for each of them.
Sounds like a good kid, very sad situation. I’ve driven through that area numerous times. A lot of people being pushed west and getting squeezed by Oak Park. This area can be rough but drive-bys are just shitty for so many reasons.
Just awful. Condolences to him and his family.
Thoughts and prayers to Tate and his family. I can’t imagine the impact of this loss, in this way.
May our Lord watch over his mother and the entire family.
Very sorry to hear about his loss. Hope he gets the strength to pass through this. May her soul rest in peace.
West Garfield Park is the roughest neighborhood I’ve ever seen. Did some volunteer work at a youth club a block from that shooting. Feel for this kid. Hard to imagine.
