Rutgers is Back! (An exercise in Futility)
Ya hate to see it, but didn't see this posted.
Our Rival Rutgers was able to beat Boston College by 1 point yesterday.
Go Knights!
However, they apparently had 1st and goal and ended up punting on that drive.
No Go Knights!

Just when you thought Rutgers had already gone full Rutgers, they Rutger.
September 4th, 2022 at 10:23 AM ^
I think a 4th and goal punt happened a couple years ago, perhaps in the Illinois / Minnesota game, so it isn't unheard of. That said, 4th and goal from the 43 when they had been as close as the 10 yard line of BC? Yikes.
September 4th, 2022 at 10:42 AM ^
Yeah, if we're talking futility, it's tough to beat No-Touchdown Iowa, winning with a field goal and 2 safeties.
That said, Iowa at night is still spooky.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:31 AM ^
Screw the cornfield. Let that game start at 8PM - bring on the full moon and everything Iowa can throw to bring the Kinnick Curse to its worst! Iowa has nothing. When your best offensive weapon is the punter, you will not win against teams that have actual players that can play offense. Their defense won't be better than what they had last year, and that wasn't nearly as good as it needed to be.
Michigan will (probably) score at least 35 that night. Does anyone here believe that Iowa's offense can keep up with that?
I mean, seriously, does anyone believe Iowa's offense will score more than 17 against Michigan?
September 4th, 2022 at 12:22 PM ^
Yeah, you're right. I just get nervous (superstitious) some times.
Screw the cornfield! (Said the guy whose first memories are of the cornfields around on three sides of the house.)
September 4th, 2022 at 12:51 PM ^
Va - the key in the Iowa game will be - ball control, possession, and turnovers. Michigan must force the Hawkeyes to “move the ball a reasonable distance” to score. Turnovers deep in Michigan’s own territory is what must be avoided.
September 4th, 2022 at 1:44 PM ^
Somewhere on the interwebs I saw that act (7 points via a FG and two safeties) being referred to as an Iowa Touchdown. I really hope this becomes a thing.
Also, if “Safety Dance” is not played and danced to at Kinnick following every Iowa safety they’re missing out on a golden opportunity to embrace their identity.
September 4th, 2022 at 2:02 PM ^
People will look at this score and the box from the game and snicker. But people need to understand South Dakota State is a very good football team. Probably could easily be a top 25 team. I’m glad they are not on our schedule as it’s a no win situation playing a team like that
September 4th, 2022 at 10:26 AM ^
Rutgers gonna Rutger
September 4th, 2022 at 10:30 AM ^
Rutgers could be 4-0 when they play Ohio State. With their schedule I think a 6-7 win season would be considered a success. Schiano is a good coach.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:29 AM ^
Schiano is a dick.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:44 AM ^
Yeah maybe. But he’s a good coach and was pretty much Michigan’s coach for about 6-7 hours. A lot of coaches are considered dicks, including our own.
September 4th, 2022 at 4:34 PM ^
6 wins for Rutgers would be a miracle for them this year.
September 4th, 2022 at 10:31 AM ^
You do realize that Michigan barely beat Rutgers each of the past two seasons? Probably should be careful who we deride and just worry about winning the next game on the schedule - Hawaii.
September 4th, 2022 at 10:44 AM ^
We're fans not the players. Overlooking scrub opponents and deriding lesser teams is what fans do even as you hope the team you root for doesn't. Why do some people not get this?
September 4th, 2022 at 10:58 AM ^
Michigan "barely beat" Rutgers last year? The maximum Rutgers probability of victory in that game was 27%, and that was with 12 minutes to go. Their POV steadily declined after that. That's not "barely beating" them.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:32 AM ^
Probably should be careful who we deride and just worry about winning the next game on the schedule - Hawaii.
Yes, we should all be crapping our pants with worry about the 0-2 team that's been outscored 112-27 by world beaters Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky.
September 4th, 2022 at 12:26 PM ^
Let me be the first to say that we are going to stomp a volcanic mudhole in Hawaii's ass. But oh my god if I do say that and the game is close it's my fault because I, a fan, overlooked an opponent!
September 4th, 2022 at 1:10 PM ^
If this game is close, then football season should be declared over.
So far, this Hawaii team looks ten times worse than the Hawaii team we beat 63-3 in 2016. At least THEY could put up points (the majority of the time) and win 7 games.
This Hawaii squad made Vanderbilt look like Alabama two weeks ago. They lost 63-10. You know the last time Vandy scored 60+ points against an opponent? 1969 when they played mighty Davidson.
Hawaii is bad, bad, BAAAAAAD.
September 4th, 2022 at 2:53 PM ^
This sounds suspiciously like you overlooking them. Oh noes!!
September 4th, 2022 at 1:23 PM ^
I expect Roman Wilson to score six touchdowns this weekend.
September 4th, 2022 at 12:57 PM ^
It's not like brown phlegm gets on your shirt if you look ahead on the schedule, folx. it's really okay. Of all the vague fan superstitions, this is the one that makes me scratch myself the most. A little on the head, a little on the balls, a little back and sides.

A win is a win.
September 4th, 2022 at 10:52 AM ^
And BC fans are melting down bc they lost to Rutgers.
September 4th, 2022 at 10:57 AM ^
Before this BC had beaten Rutgers 11 times straight going back to 1995 or so. BC was also favored in the game. I think Rutgers is making real progress under Schiano to win the game despite that weird drive.
September 4th, 2022 at 12:58 PM ^
I think they played three different QBs on the first three plays, too, so that's weird fun.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:08 AM ^
Rutgers was a touchdown underdog. This is a weird topic
September 4th, 2022 at 11:18 AM ^
This thread has it all.
Stupid topic? Check.
An underdog B1G team winning against a team they hadn’t beaten since 1995 deserves to be mocked?
A comment posted where a blogger admonishes his fellow fans to not overlook a dogshit opponent? Check.
We don’t play or coach, we’re fans who have 0.0% impact on the outcome. And our next opponent is the doggiest of digshit bad.
The blog is in midseason form already. Good work everyone.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:32 AM ^
Isn't it a bit early in the season to be cranky 🤔
September 4th, 2022 at 12:58 PM ^
Never.
September 4th, 2022 at 1:52 PM ^
Do you even know MGrowOld? He's the Blog's resident crank bait that isn't trolling. Pretty much all the other cranky bastards here are trolling. MGrow is a cranky bastard, but he means well and is not trolling.
Just stay off his lawn and you'll be fine... LOL!!
September 4th, 2022 at 3:47 PM ^
I’m not sure if I’m being insulted or complimented so I’m going with complimented because it makes me feel better about myself.
Thanks!
September 4th, 2022 at 11:33 AM ^
Some potential improvements:
1. START JJ (ala Play Morris)
2. Fuck the refs (there were very few whistles, yesterday)
3. We posted “fuck shit” 34 times during the open thread
4. The game is over, I am making a tomahawk wagyu steak on my traeger while drinking three kinds of bourbon of which you’ve never heard.
5. Baseless speculation about a 3rd string guy who didn’t play today. Furthermore, that it was definitely due to academics.
September 4th, 2022 at 12:10 PM ^
Tell me more about this Wagyu steak. I'd prbably just go for extreme heat sear and forget the traeger.
September 4th, 2022 at 2:01 PM ^
Negative. Tomahawks require a reverse sear. You smoke'em low and slow until they hit ~115, then pull and wrap them while you bring the grill up to searable temps (~600-700°) (will a Treager get there?) and sear the shit out of both sides for a minute, or so, with a pad of seasoned butter added to each side. Add more butter after you pull them while they rest for ~10 min.
Perfection...
PS: Any thick cut of meat can be reverse seared nicely, just make sure the cut is at least 1" thick. Thicker is better...
September 5th, 2022 at 12:35 AM ^
I'm all over that, but I wouldn't spend the money on the extreme marbling of high end wagyu for that setup. It'll be tasty but I'd go with a boneless cut and extremely fast very high temp sear for that one.
Either way, I'm eating it!
September 4th, 2022 at 12:59 PM ^
Number four is gonna win out and cost you a tidy pile.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:41 AM ^
Thank you!
September 4th, 2022 at 12:44 PM ^
Please don’t tell my wife that fans’ actions have no effects on the outcome of the game. After 30+ years, I have her at least somewhat convinced that what I say and do can affect whether Michigan wins or loses.
September 4th, 2022 at 1:15 PM ^
Thanks for summarizing what I was also thinking. And one more.

You forgot another thing it has in the process of having it all: old guy yelling "get off my lawn". :)
September 4th, 2022 at 11:30 AM ^
I am impressed at the creative and original new ways they’re finding to Rutger these days.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:32 AM ^
Louisiana Tech had a rather infamous 4th and goal from their own 10 against Mississippi State a few years ago. They lost 80+ yards on one play where tons of players weren’t able to secure a bouncing around and sliding backwards football.
Michigan State had a 4th and goal punt when they got whooped by Alabama in that Citrus Bowl about 10 years ago. Same sort of deal, lost 25-30 yards on a bouncing around fumble they eventually recovered.
in sure there have been others too …..
As for Rutgers - that was a BIG win for them. No, they aren’t conference title contenders. But they are getting better. If I were a RU fan I’d be feeling good these days.
September 4th, 2022 at 4:26 PM ^
Losing because you're unable to get a late game punt off? We wouldn't know anything about that. Nope. Nah ah...
September 4th, 2022 at 11:54 AM ^
Then won though.. They're not patsies. Also, I think that we did that under hoke. A couple personal fouls makes it easy
September 4th, 2022 at 11:55 AM ^
As a Rutgers grad, this was a good and a big win. Iowa and Nebraska look like shit so it's very possible we get to bowl eligibility this year. I know the blog loves to make fun of Rutgers but there are worse teams in the conference in both basketball and football. I mean look at Iowa, they needed 2 safeties to win at home, that's atrocious.
It's just tough sledding in the East.
September 4th, 2022 at 12:49 PM ^
Don’t forget that Rutgers was down three key players including their QB
September 4th, 2022 at 1:19 PM ^
Butgers - and yes the name checks out!
September 4th, 2022 at 1:45 PM ^
Am I the only one that thinks the "LOL Rutger" thing is getting played out? I feel like their athletic department has made some decent moves and they're not really that bad in a lot of sports. Their basketball program has made the tournament recently, and Schiano is a solid hire in football.
Of the newest additions to the conference, the one that makes the least sense (for everything but nostalgia) is Nebraska.
