Big Ten/ ESPN negotiations "begin"
ESPN has an exclusive negotiating window with the Big Ten, which many expect to end without a deal in place. This will allow the rights to hit the open market and all the major players are expected to be involved. The success of the B1G this past football season in terms of viewership will bring everyone to the table.
ESPN is determined to keep their share of games.
Fox wants to expand their deal.
CBS is looking to replace the SEC after 2023
NBC is hoping to have a CFB double header with ND following Big Ten games
I expect the money is going to be ridiculous. Michigan winning the title this year is certainly to help increase the payday because when they are a good, they are a huge draw. Currently Fox is paying $240M per year and ESPN is paying $190M.

I wonder how Peacock has worked out for Notre Dame. Having to explain to anyone over the age of 40 how to access it has been a chore. I don’t think the B1G would be able to do a deal that didn’t have cable being their main source of where games are played.
February 15th, 2022 at 2:11 PM ^
Weren't all the games on basic, over the air NBC channel?!
February 15th, 2022 at 2:15 PM ^
The Toledo game was on Peacock. The game was surprisingly close, there were a lot of people trying to get that game while it was in progress.
ND has had 1-2 games on NBCSN over the years too.
February 15th, 2022 at 3:05 PM ^
Peacock also makes it easy to watch game replays.

NBCSN is shut down now I think

PSA: this just in, PSU knocked off state in hoops, 62-58. congrats nittany.
not going to start a new thread about it, but nice news for a tuesday night.
EDIT: and its early, but with 3 minutes left in the first half, minny is beating ohio, in columbus, by 4. might be good night for hoops after all.
February 16th, 2022 at 12:59 PM ^
Ha ha - thanks!
I'm so "in tune with PSU basketball" right now that THIS is how I found out about the win - 16 hours after the fact on a Michigan message board! I had no idea the game was even occurring!

First, I’m glad I’m not the only one double posting. It’s gotta be this thread.
I was more focusing on any increase they might have seen, or if it was just another option for viewers. I can’t imagine it has been a wind fall, but how many viewers used it instead of NBC, or traditional broadcast.
February 15th, 2022 at 2:22 PM ^
I stepped away from my computer for a few minutes and I saw that this thread went from like 5 replies to 84. I knew it had to be multiple-posting or something really interesting went down.

Ahhh you're right; forgot about that early season should've-been-loss.

I feel bad for sports bartenders during this age of streaming.
It used to be "hey, can you put on ABC for the game?".
Now it's "can you download Prime TV and then login to Strxremly, upgrade to the local channel plan, that comes free with the WalmartNow NFT."
February 15th, 2022 at 10:24 PM ^
New to posting around here. How do I upvote hilarity like this?
February 15th, 2022 at 4:49 PM ^
Anyone over 40? Seriously? That number seems like it should be higher
February 15th, 2022 at 5:47 PM ^
Yeah for sure. Being in the (just a little bit) "over 40 group" myself I became a bit annoyed at that comment!
February 15th, 2022 at 5:58 PM ^
It should be over 70.
BTW, I'm 69.
February 15th, 2022 at 6:20 PM ^
fooled me. your t-shirt doesn't look a day over 21. kudos.
February 15th, 2022 at 7:08 PM ^
I'm over 40 and can use Peacock like a champ, haha. But I do have an IT degree even if I don't use it.

From a viewership standpoint, Fox has had the best picture quality on YTTV for me. They also have a good amount of 4k games as well, which puts them way ahead of the others. As far as the others for PQ, ESPN/CBS, BTN, ............... NBC. NBC games look like shit on youtubetv.
February 15th, 2022 at 4:19 PM ^
Fox has the most commercials and the fewest replays. No thanks.
February 15th, 2022 at 4:33 PM ^
Is there any kind of source you can point to with the commercials? Even an amateur just adding up commercial time. Every single broadcast I watch regardless of network on fall Saturdays seems to have a similarly obnoxious amount of commercial breaks and commercial time per break is standardized (seen on the commercial countdown clock in the stadium).
February 15th, 2022 at 5:01 PM ^
No ‘source’ but games on Fox take longer to complete than games on any other network, and since the game time is always the same at 60 minutes, more/longer commercials are the likely explanation. Fox games also just feel like they have more commercials than anyone else
February 16th, 2022 at 10:43 AM ^
That's cyclical as all the networks go through that. Nationally televised games are all over 3 1/2 hours and many on ABC 3:30 noon go over 4hrs. Fans start turning the channels and networks start cutting back the commercial time. But always go back. Avg game is 3hrs 24 minutes according to the NCAA.. that was as of 2017..
Most conferences have addressed this with networks and want the games to be between 3 and 3 1/2 hours. Many things have been instituted like running the clock after the ball is spotted from going out of bounds where as before the clock stopped. There have been a few other things but the conferences don't want to alter the game to much but don't want to lose revenue either....
I recall the late 2000's where I started to hate going to nationally televised games were creeping at 4 hours and more. A noon game and we weren't leaving the stadium till after 4pm. Kickoff, 4 minute commerical, End of first series commercial. Score a td, 4 minute commercial, fg, 4 minute commercial, Kickoff again, 4 minute commercial. One game, got up, went to the rr, the old troths and lines.. came out, waited in line for concessions right after a TD.. took about 15 minutes... Was back in time for the kickoff.. Kick off, ref comes out announces, Commercial Time out.. the entire big house was booing.. nearly 20 minutes of dead time around a few plays for commercials..
February 17th, 2022 at 10:08 PM ^
If you're at the games, they put a countdown timer with the time remaining in the commercial break up on the scoreboard. It's slightly longer for FOX games than it is for ESPN/ABC.
What I can't quantify is whether or not there are more breaks in a FOX broadcast.
February 15th, 2022 at 5:56 PM ^
Would love it if the B1G was looking out for viewers as well as stadium fans, insisting on corralling runaway commercial breaks--working at subtler stuff like viewing angles (see bball)--now when they have got negotiating leverage.
February 17th, 2022 at 11:35 AM ^
I agree with this, I would be happy if B1G was Fox only. Joel and Gus are some of the most entertaining, and they by far have the best PQ and most 4k offerings. I can't remember if any of the other channels even had any 4k Michigan games. Even the CFP on ESPN did not look as good as non-4k Fox.

Double post. Too hasty to get my glorious insight posted, I guess. And, of course, I edit the fucking first of the two. *Sigh*

Here come the night games. One a year (before November, better yet, before mid-October) is fine but 2-3/year sucks.
