Exit: Nolan Rumler
As the Wolverine was the first to report, Nolan Rumler is looking to transfer.
Michigan offensive lineman Nolan Rumler is in the transfer portal.

Sad, not unexpected loss because he’s from a great family and loves Michigan, but was getting passed by younger guys on the depth chart. Talk over the summer was he’s everything as advertised as a run blocker but wasn’t picking up pass pro. Rumler’s path to the field was to move up into Filiaga’s spot, which was a starter if Zinter moved to center. However Zinter is sticking at guard, with Crippen and Anderson looking like the future at center, and Reece Atteberry, a 2020, was on the field with the backups vs NIU, which is a sign he’s passed Rumler as well, and that's before we mention tackles Trente Jones and Karsen Barnhart, who are effectively part of the same depth chart.
Note that because of the COVID year a lot of these guys have a ton of eligibility, including Rumler, who will have three years left to play (redshirt in 2019, COVID shirt in 2020). Both of Michigan’s current starting guards, Keegan and Zinter, also have freshman eligibility this year.
He’s still with the team but I think the plan here is to enroll in a new school by January so he can compete in spring. Wishing him the best of luck. There is no content after the jump.

Best of luck. Find greener playing fields.

Good luck. I’m sorry it didn’t work out.

And when we do go into ohio to grab some players, so many don't live up to their ⭐s!
Wussup with that?!

Good luck, hope you can put it together somewhere!

i'm always disappointed when kids don't find a way to stick around and get a degree from the finest university (james earl jones voice) in. the. world.
but i also always hope they find the playing time they need to turn themselves into pros. this is no different, i wish him the best.

don’t they usually at least wait until the season is over?
October 1st, 2021 at 12:37 PM ^
The portal changed the optics, not the reality. Transferring schools takes some time, including the time it takes to find one. If he wants to be there to compete in spring he's got to enroll in January, which means he's got to be admitted in Nov-December. Kids always started talking to other schools during the season, but before the portal it happened in back channels and was announced over Christmas.

Is he still able to finish his current classes on scholarship or does he have to either drop out of school immediately or pay tuition?
October 1st, 2021 at 3:36 PM ^
They'll honor his scholarship for sure. This is a "it didn't work out; let's find you a good landing spot so you can play" not an "okay byeeee."
October 1st, 2021 at 12:19 PM ^
Shame, especially for a highly ranked kid from OH...it would nice to start building more relationships to get more kids from OH that OSU wants, but good luck to him.

I realize playing time is probably the reason behind the transfer but can someone who enters the portal get playing time if he remains with the team and otherwise remains eligible?
October 1st, 2021 at 1:11 PM ^
I think so. Seth's statement that "he's still with the team" seems to imply that he is still eligible to do what team members do, which includes playing in games.
If so, this announcement doesn't actually have any effect at all on the depth chart this year. Rumler would still be available on the off chance that he is needed. It is just an announcement about next season. That's how I understood it anyway.
October 1st, 2021 at 1:42 PM ^
He probably won't play if he wants to preserve a year. Practice might happen but I doubt coaches are going to want to waste time on a potential transfer. I don't know their philosophy.
October 1st, 2021 at 2:35 PM ^
He can't preserve a year, though. He redshirted in 2019. There is no reason for him to decline playing time this year if it is available.
October 1st, 2021 at 3:37 PM ^
Yeah there wasn't.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:38 PM ^
I hope he was able to get his degree.
Thanks to the young man for his efforts. Thousands of hours of hard work under the bridge, and it's difficult for us to appreciate that, when what we want the most are those on-field results. Enough guys have improved well in the program that I'm not discouraged on a program level, so I hope someone with a different approach at another program is able to have more success helping him develop.
October 1st, 2021 at 2:59 PM ^
If he was able to get a degree in 2.5 years, that might explain why he didn't have enough time to learn pass protection.

Good luck to young Nolan!
Can't help but feel like this is a Mel Tucker special. MSU can definitely use some help along the offensive line, and Mel's on a hot streak in the portal. Picking off a former blue chip recruit from big brother feels like a very Spartan move.
Wish him well where ever he ends up.

I think Rumler has stronger feelings toward UM than BVS did, for example. I'd be surprised if he jumped to MSU.
October 1st, 2021 at 3:59 PM ^
I think he ends up at Cinci or Toledo or Akron.
October 1st, 2021 at 5:48 PM ^
Ohio U could be a good spot
October 1st, 2021 at 7:15 PM ^
Cinci makes sense for a lot of the kids that fizzle at M or o or State.
October 2nd, 2021 at 12:29 AM ^
At this point in time do we really believe that someone who can't get PT at Michigan could at Cinci?
I mean, they're favored in South Bend this week ?♂️

Not just Mel. Everyone's recruiting now every day of the year. Previously unseen roster turnover is here.

Quite a few transfers from UofM have had nice careers at CMU.

“Talk over the summer was he’s everything as advertised as a run blocker but wasn’t picking up pass pro”
for a team that refuses to pass the ball, this makes me shocked he can’t get into the 2 deep
October 2nd, 2021 at 6:47 PM ^
How'd this comment age?
October 1st, 2021 at 2:04 PM ^
For me- this is the best part of the transfer portal. He’s a candidate that’s perfect for it. Could go somewhere else and contribute at a smaller d1 school. He gave it a shot and probably just wasn’t good enough. I am happy for him and hope there is no ill will on either side. Wish him the best.
it’s not like the old days where you said stick it out no matter what even if you’re not quite the quality needed at this level. I’m glad now the guys who come in try and just don’t have it get their last opportunity to play the sport the love somewhere.
Is there some bad to the portal where guys give up early, probably. There is also alot of food in it too in the situation where this is an unpaid sport and some guys are just trying to get some PT with their last opportunity
October 1st, 2021 at 2:55 PM ^
Talk over the summer was he’s everything as advertised as a run blocker but wasn’t picking up pass pro.
And the problem with that is….? Seems like we run the ball a lot.
/s….kind of
October 1st, 2021 at 5:48 PM ^
To your point...it would seem like he'd at least get the 6th OL spot in obvious running situations if he was that good at run blocking.
Trente Jones or Barnhart would get it when you didn't want to tip your hand.
Anyway, wish him the best!

Say it ain’t so No
October 1st, 2021 at 5:46 PM ^
I think this is going to be a Charbonnet situation.
In 2 years he's going to be a monster, but Zak Zinter will be first team All-B1G and all we can do is shrug. Knowing it worked out everyone.
Wish him the best, obviously I think highly of him, I just think he needs a little more time.
Crazy that we don't have Rumler or Carpenter and those two were supposed to anchor the interior line for 3 straight years.
October 1st, 2021 at 7:21 PM ^
I was wondering about him for a bit now, so this didn’t surprise me. The move from center to G was telling and the hype that Jim was giving to Crippen made me go look up to see if he was still on the roster. Kinda thought it was gonna go different when he commuted hope it works out for the guy. I think with Stueber leaving after the season move Keegan to RT as he is Stueber like, and get if chuck to stay the line probably improves in this scenario as essentially all are starters with and added year to develop and hit the weights.
October 1st, 2021 at 10:12 PM ^
I guess I'm a little confused what "not picking up pass pro" means. Like, he can't learn it? He's not taking coaching? Or he just doesn't have the physical attributes (short arms, slow feet, etc)?
October 2nd, 2021 at 7:28 AM ^
Bummer. Hope he lands somewhere and still gets to the pros.
There was a time I knew every O-lineman on the team and knew why they wouldn't be a competent starter. I think Rumler's recruitment was on the tail end of that. We have so many guys that can actually play now that I can't keep track of them all. I'd forgotten about Rumler. I can't wait till I feel that way about every position. I used to like only knowing a players name because they were Charles Woodson, Kato June, Biakabatuka or Skrepanak. (sp?) (The awesome guys)
