Western Michigan Receives Largest Donation to an American University Ever 550 Million
An anonymous alumni donor with 50 million dedicated to athletics. ?
Your move, Stephen M. Ross.
Damn. What a prick. Now I'm gonna have to donate $551 million to CMU just to beat this asshole.
But seriously, good for him and WMU. This does raise an interesting question. Where would you donate if you had that kind of money? I would probably spread my money around to animal shelters throughout the country.
If you have half a billion in "donate" money, chances are you're already comfortable enough to not have to worry about anything for yourself anymore. For a single-time donation, probably troubled youth/early intervention programs.
Micro finance in less well off areas of the planet.
Pretty sure its plural (alumni) that donated.
EDIT: Yep its a pool of donors
Why waste your money? Just open Chinese restaurants next to them. Control overpopulation AND make a profit.
[Edit: this post by MGoHillbilly is being addressed in the mod sticky thread. I considered removing it but decided to instead leave it in place because MGoUser "Kehnonymous" took the high road while clearly stating his objections to the post. If I had removed this, everything threaded below would have also disappeared.
Objections, observations, etc? Please take them to the mod sticky.

What an incredibly racist and tasteless thing to say.
Tasteless? Have you even had dog before?
I guess this is a safe space now. Reading topics and posts on this board the last few weeks is now no different than watching Michigan football; soul sucking and pointless.
Tastes like chicken.
Actually, it doesn't
Depends on the diet.
How dare people protest your racist jokes. I eagerly await your complaint about "cancel culture."
Right on cue.
Username checks out...
I am hopeful you and XM can reunite.
MGoHillbilly -
Would you mind explaining what you mean? I’m of Chinese descent so you’d think I would understand but…. I don’t. Please, enlighten me as to what you’re talking about.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lychee_and_Dog_Meat_Festival
In opposition, people go to great lengths: https://nodogsleftbehind.com/jeff-beris-story/
So is he implying that most Chinese people eat dogs? While I personally find that festival pretty horrific as do many other Chinese people, I find the implication that Chinese restaurants are associated with dog-eating really curious since no one in my extended family (most of which lives in HK and China) has ever entertained such a notion, so I don't really understand the subtext here. Why is it that people seem to think Chinese (and by extension Chinese-Americans like me) eat dogs?
MGoHillbilly - would you care to unpack that for us?
I think the implication is that restaurants are...cooking the dogs. Who's eating them could be debated.
yeah but I've literally never seen that at the several dozen times I've been to a Chinese restaurant in my life, not even on the 'secret menu' so the implication doesn't make any sense.
Hey MGoHillbilly - assuming you're one of my downvoters: instead of blindly downvoting, why not just kindly explain your implication so as to enlighten my inquiry? After all, I'm just trying to have a civil conversation.
I’m an American and I don’t even understand the whole “Chinese people eat dog” thing. I have no idea where that nonsense came from.
My pops served in the US Army in Korea during the Korean Conflict in the 50's. He saw a group of locals roasting a dog over an open fire.
That being said, I know of Americans that eat bull testicles, pig brains and tripe (which is a muscle found in the stomach of cows, pigs and sheep)......
Yet to imply all Americans eat such things would be absurd, as is it absurd to insinuate all Chinese restaurants serve dog, all Chinese (or Asians for that matter) eat dog.
Top ten ass hat post this decade.
MgoHillbilly playbook, apparently:
- Make hackneyed bigoted joke;
- Get criticized;
- Double down;
- Whimper about safe spaces;
- Get criticized more;
- Hide behind Vietnamese wife and children.
Coward.
Definitely would donate to something that could make a difference like hospitals or cancer research
Millions of people around the world don't have clean drinking water.
I agree, I too would put a lot into no-kill shelters.
Also, I think at that stage you could do the most good by starting your own charity -- the you have an inside look at exactly how the money is spent and make sure you're maximizing good.
Their kids' test scores must have been something
"Yale could use an international airport, Mr. Burns"
GET OUT OF HERE! I'M NOT MADE OF AIRPORTS!!!
(he spelled "Yale" with a '6')
Wow. Imagine having the kind of money whereby you can just give $550 million away.
I think it’s spread out over 10 years, but still damn impressive.
And who among us can't imagine giving away $55 million a year, y'know?
My Roller Coaster Tycoon park easily generates enough money where I could donate $55 million a year without so much as a thought, if I can figure out a way to translate the game currency into real American dollars.
Tom gores brother is equally as wealthy , went to WMU
this is $ and Stryker MPI $
It's a pool of donors, not a single donor. Likely the same 10-50 individuals that make up the Kalamazoo Promise. There's a ton of $$$$ around Kalamazoo.
Kalamazoo? How is this possible? WTF is in Kalamazoo???
I'm guessing the Apjohn family did this.
Upjohn?
Stryker family did the Kalamazoo promise. It might be them. Though I don't think they have an issue with putting their names on stuff.
I had heard the Upjohns were involved in Kalamazoo Promise. Though it could easily be either or both families. Kalamazoo Promise and this WMU donation would both be consistent with either family's philanthropy.
They're likely involved but literally every news article mentions its a pool of various local families and alumni (Stryker / Upjohn etc.).
My son goes to Western. I'm sure this means tuition goes down/s. Thank you Strykers! That's the word from K-zoo. Now they can afford a defensive coordinator.
My first thought was "Now WMU can afford three more layers of useless academic administration. Maybe thirty or so Vice Presidents of <something>. Oh, and an athletes lounge with waterfalls and tigers."
Sure would be nice to see lots of scholarships funded ...
That's precisely what they will do: Add bureaucratic layers and fluff up athletes while academic stars get the shaft (again). And tuition will keep going up at triple the rate of inflation. The administration there is entirely financially irresponsible and this will only serve to embolden them.
I graduated from WMU in 2014. While I was there, they ripped up hundreds of yards of perfectly good sidewalks with very few cracks and replaced them with slightly better sidewalks. They also "remodeled" Miller fountain. While both of these things could be defended or justified, I also attended classes where equipment was outdated. In my opinion the money would have been better spent in a way that improves academics rather than in a way that wows the parents of freshmen during Welcome Week.

This number is unbelievable, and I hope it will be applied to ensure students' and educators' comfort. I've been a student here, and sometimes I've felt so miserable with some assignments, so I've used [SPAM LINK DELETED a 2nd time] to get some help. Educators are so busy, and it's obvious, but it's necessary to get some of their support as studying is hard. But, it was several years ago, maybe the situation changed.

You were a student at Western?
Can you prove it by singing the WMU fight song? I kinda doubt it, but I'll give you the rest of the day to respond; otherwise I'll be banning you for spamming this website.
In the meantime, I've already deleted your spam link, 'Oliver'.

It was easy to see that rather than prove you attended WMU, you reposted your link again after I had previously deleted it.
That wrong move clinched my decision to now block your account permanently.
