RPI has Michigan ranked as #1
I never look at the RPI rankings because they are pretty much garbage, however, I just checked out the most recent rankings and they have Michigan #1 followed by Gonzaga. Interesting to see how many other teams are rated as being better than our B1G brethren.

I also have us ranked #1.
Your poll is the only one worth paying attention to, in my opinion
What, do you think he's funny? Like he's here to amuse you?

How about Pesci instead?
That's what she said.
Navy and Colgate #11 and #12. Haha.....
I got in a ski accident the first day of March madness two years ago. When I woke up in the hospital, Colgate was playing Tennessee. I thought to myself, “I’m glad I’m dreaming. Colgate is a toothpaste.” I went back to sleep and had that experience like 3 more times. Glad they’re a real college.
Damn. That's big. Michigan has a chance to go wire-to-wire as #1 in the goodfella96 poll for the 20th straight year.
Even during the Ellerbe years! No shame in my poll game.
Also in my heart.
Woo! And also, Hoo!
Very contradictory post. If it's garbage, why make a thread on it?
Because it used to be garbage. Now it's not.
Thursday is trash day. So is this coming Sunday.
If we're all contributing pointless posts, here's my entry:
Not sure there are degrees to contradiction. It either contradicts or it doesn't. Describing it as "very" contradictory makes it seem like you're grandstanding. "Very" is a word, like "just", that I try to avoid using in everyday conversation.
Just should only be used in the context of unjust. It's not a proper adverb.
Oddly enough the Cambridge and Merriam-Webster folks are just fine with it:

That’s because the bend to the will of the masses
That's how language works. As a famous philosopher once said: "All words are made up. "
Obligatory:
Signals, Jerry! Signals!
That is very good advice.
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!
Something's broken with their algorithm. That poll makes zero sense.
But yeah, huzzah for being #1 in some poll.
Illinois ranked 33. I like it.
Love the folks at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for ranking us number 1. Now I have to learn how to pronounce their name.
Well if you can spell it, saying it’s the easy part!
I will help with the first word -
Ren - sa - leer
You are on your own for the last two.
For the MGoBasketballHistorians out there, have we ever been favored by 8.5 pts or more against a team ranked as high as #4? We’ve had a lot of basketball success so I guess I should frame it as, when was the last time that...? Seems like a historically significant point spread.
I think they're anticipating Ayo out for this game. If Ayo is healthy, the spread would be much closer for this game
RPI doesn't understand how the game is played.
I like it -- Sparty checks in at 109 -- one slot ahead of UMBC.
Seems about right to me.......
Nah, they should totally be behind umbc
If they finish behind UMBC do they become UMIC?
I met a lass from UMBC in Georgetown decades ago. Being behind UMBC is not a position of disfavor as I recall.
Perhaps the worst college "campus" I've ever visited, though.
I never check them... but I just checked them.
Never say never. Never say always.
The conundrum of absolutes.
Anyone who thinks Gonzaga or Baylor is better than Michigan isn't paying attention
We’ve been #1 in RPI for a while
I don’t care where we are ranked. We just have to kick ass during the tournament.
We’re number two! We’re number 2!!!
Colorado State is better than Illinois?
How do Big 14 teams not have strongest SOS scores?
The # 1 RPI makes sense based on what we have been seeing this year.
Duh.
These rankings are ridiculous, aside from Michigan being number one which I agree with.
They have Wichita state, BYU, Clemson, etc., rated higher than OSU, Illinois and Iowa, please.
Sagarin thinks so much of the Big Ten that in his ratings for schedule strength so far, the entire Big Ten is in the top 20 overall in the country:
Northwestern #1
Penn State #2
Indiana #3
Rutgers #4
Nebraska #5
Ohio State #7
Maryland #8
Purdue #10
Minnesota #11
Michigan State #12
Iowa #13
Illinois #14
Wisconsin #16
Michigan #18
I'm assuming we are last because besides only playing OSU, Iowa once, and not having played Illinois yet, we don't have to play ourselves.
I can't remember seeing anything this crazy before in his SOS rankings, which generally are pretty good. It has to be because of the lack of non-conference games to properly analyze conferences against each other. I think the Big Ten is really good, but not THAT good.
The only non-Big Ten teams listed ahead of Michigan in schedule strength are:
#6 Iowa State (who is 2-18)
#9 Kentucky (8-14)
#15 Kansas (17-8)
#17 Marquette (11-13)
He's got Gonzaga at #109 SOS and Baylor at #83
Lowest tier teams in the B1G has a tougher SOS than the teams with the winning records. Kind of weird but it makes sense. On the other hand, we (Michigan) played the same teams that Neb and NW played so SOS should be nearly the same.
