Ok cool, hook em.

Texas is back... to the coaching carousel.

Just like us, flailing desperately to find the savior of their program. Maybe one or two steps behind though.

Update: ESPN's David Pollack has 'heard' Steve Sarkisian turned Texas down
January 2nd, 2021 at 4:21 PM ^
David Pollack is trash, so I wouldn't give this much weight.

The very last time this comment will be made on MGB +1

Come on down Steve Sarkisan. #Sark
Dominos starting to fall
Cheers
January 2nd, 2021 at 11:57 AM ^
Michigan should've gone after Sark.
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:03 PM ^
He’s a drunk who has failed in two previous stops,
No.
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:19 PM ^
I really don't like the constant ragging on him for that reason. A lot of us have dealt with alcoholics in our lives. He seems like he's gotten the help he needs and gotten his life back together. As long as he stays clean, I don't mind giving him a chance.
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:34 PM ^
Good point. But, he is shitty coach who has never succeeded anywhere. He was average at Washington he was below average at USC. He was fired as an offensive coordinator in the NFL. Why would a program like Texas hire a guy whose entire resume says average
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:38 PM ^
Fair points. All of those are fair criticisms. No need to drag the guy's prior alcoholism into it. Maybe the drinking caused some of these issues - I don't know.
January 2nd, 2021 at 2:19 PM ^
I didn’t drag his alcoholism into it. And if you want to overlook the alcoholism because he’s completely recovered and has been sober free for say five years, I agree! But don’t start using it as an excuse for his shit record.
January 2nd, 2021 at 2:36 PM ^
SQ mentioned that he is a drunk. SQ is a shitty human being.
January 2nd, 2021 at 3:20 PM ^
I didn't say you did. My bad if it read that way.
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:56 PM ^
The Alabama coordinator trap. Doug Nussmeier put up really dazzling stats too.
January 2nd, 2021 at 1:11 PM ^
Alabama fans hated him and he was let go after one season.
January 2nd, 2021 at 1:46 PM ^
The difference between Nussmeier and Sarkisian is night and day. Nussmeier was conservative and lacked any kind of innovation. His philosophy was we have the best Oline in football we are going to get 4 years a carry. The fan-base couldn't have been happier to see him leave. If you don't move forward you'll get left behind.
Sark was the opposite. Bama is Bama and will be fine but the fan base is sorry to see him going. Unlike Nuss he is cerebral and innovative and adjusts his schemes to the players talents. Mac Jones is a Heisman candidate. Nussmeier took Heisman caliber qbs and made them game mangers.
January 2nd, 2021 at 2:17 PM ^
Every OC at Alabama has a stable of 5* and it’s a job you have really put effort into if you want to fail. The Alabama OC job is you show up and can do just about nothing and you win coordinator of the year. Look at every OC at Bama and you see them get a big job after and then fail. Bama is also the place for failed coaches like Kiffen and Sark to brush off all the stink of their previous records.
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:37 PM ^
I'm willing to give him a pass on the alcohol assuming he's in recovery, the failing as a HC every time he's tried...not so much. He should have to prove himself as a HC at a mid major or a smaller P5 before I'd be willing to give him the gig at a blue blood.
January 2nd, 2021 at 2:28 PM ^
Herman with his record at OSU, Houston, and even Texas has a far better resume still than Sark. What a stupid decision.
January 2nd, 2021 at 1:08 PM ^
This is the answer. I am sick of people shitting on him for suffering from alcoholism in the past. Everything I’ve heard suggests that he got the help he needed when he left USC.
January 2nd, 2021 at 4:25 PM ^
There is no such thing as suffering from alcoholism in the "past". You either are or aren't an alcoholic.
I hope for his sake he's clean, but I'd have a zero buyout condition in his contract regarding alcohol for sure.
January 2nd, 2021 at 1:26 PM ^
The guy has accumulated enough wealth to retire and live comfortably for the rest of his life. Why would you feel sorry for him? Giving people second chances is one thing, investing millions of dollars in an alcoholic to be the leader of young men. . .not a wise investment. I hope no one hires Zach Smith for the same reason.
January 2nd, 2021 at 2:28 PM ^
He is not currently an alcoholic anymore as far as any of us know. Why do you keep referring to him as if he is still an alcoholic?
January 2nd, 2021 at 2:54 PM ^
You don’t stop being an alcoholic. You become an alcoholic who doesn’t drink and stays sober.
January 2nd, 2021 at 3:56 PM ^
Okay that’s what I meant, I just worded it wrong... my point still stands.
January 2nd, 2021 at 11:39 PM ^
You clearly have never had alcoholism in your immediate family. It isn’t something that you just “get over”. You have to forever be intentional about going to your meetings, not putting yourself in situations where alcohol is a focus, etc.
I’ve had more than one alcoholic in my family and my longterm girlfriend is a licensed therapist who specializes in working with addicts. Her prior fiancé (before she got into that specialty) was a closet drunk that drank mouthwash to avoid detection.
I hope Sark is forever good, but statistics show there’s a high chance that he will slip. And if he does it’ll be egg on the face of a proud university and alumni base. Texas fans are pissed right now.
January 2nd, 2021 at 2:06 PM ^
He definitely deserves another chance. However he has never shown to be a good HC so I would take a hard pass on him. Maybe an OC I would be up for but not HC
January 2nd, 2021 at 4:19 PM ^
This is the right view in so many ways but.....if you are the AD making a career decision is that a risk you want to take on?
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:24 PM ^
He obviously has been doing well with his recovery, so if Texas feels he should be given a second chance, why not Michigan?
This holier than thou bullshit is tiresome.
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:36 PM ^
Exactly, doesn't Harbaugh have a dui?
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:56 PM ^
To be fair, having a DUI is a little different than being drunk on the job in the eyes of any potential employers. The problem with Sark isn’t that he struggled with alcoholism, it’s that he allowed it to carry over into his job as a head coach. Drunk while coaching and missing practices because you’re drunk isn’t a good look for a head coach.
Your employer could overlook you having a DUI (as long as your job doesn’t involve driving). They could overlook you drinking on nights and weekends. Showing up to work drunk or not showing up at all because you’re drunk is not something that would be overlooked, or should be overlooked for that matter. Tell any prospective employer that you were drunk on the job and you’re pretty much guaranteed to not get the job.
That’s a big black mark on anyone’s resume. Much less a guy with subpar results as a head coach. I commend him if he’s getting the help he needs and is doing well in his recovery. But that’s still not the kind of person I would want to coach my team.
January 2nd, 2021 at 1:13 PM ^
He also assaulted Jim Kelly.
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:40 PM ^
Because the pressure of the job is going to make it difficult for him to stay sober.
Being HC is much different than being an assistant coach in terms of pressure. Texas in particular is a pressure cooker.
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:46 PM ^
hahahahaha, you realize who he coaches under right? FFS I am fairly certain going to Austin as the HC will lessen the pressure on him.
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:49 PM ^
Was this written in jest? This is an unimaginably stupid post.
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:50 PM ^
Oh Jesus. You’re living in the 1950s.
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:59 PM ^
Come on, man. This is a bad take. People in recovery should be supported, not dismissed as drunks or junkies. I hope nobody in your family has struggled with drugs or alcohol.
January 2nd, 2021 at 1:05 PM ^
I support him in his journey to sobriety. I also don’t want to hire a guy known for getting drunk and coaching games.
January 2nd, 2021 at 2:33 PM ^
You’d be surprised how many people work drunk because they are dependent on alcohol and simply can’t function when they start to withdraw. Sark wasn’t coaching drunk because he wanted to party and just didn’t give a shit, he probably couldn’t function without some degree of alcohol in his system. Yes it’s a black mark, that’s why he got fired. But if he’s able to prove his ongoing sobriety for years, has obviously shown his commitment to staying sober and understands the severe consequences, it seems like he should have the opportunity at another job. If Texas wants him to take a breathalyzer anytime he gets on campus, then this would be well within their right to demand contractually.
January 2nd, 2021 at 4:17 PM ^
I don't think Michigan should give him a 3rd chance as a head coach because I simply don't think he is a good head coach nor a clear upgrade over JH. The recovering alcoholic angle is purely a red herring in the discussion.
January 2nd, 2021 at 1:46 PM ^
That's ok, not like Austin's a big drinking town. It's in a dry county right?
January 2nd, 2021 at 2:22 PM ^
He has the most prolific offense in the country.
Texas will be better than Michigan, faster than Michigan. Again other schools care more about football than Michigan. They fired a coach who went 4-0 in bowl games and was 7-3 this season. And our ridiculous AD offers an extensionto a coach who is 1-4 in bowls and went 2-4 this season i. A weak ass B1G
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:06 PM ^
You mean known alcoholic Sark? The same Sark who allegedly coached an entire game against Arizona State while piss drunk? The one who lost a $30 million wrongful termination lawsuit against USC after it was discovered that he had also had numerous other alcohol-related incidents while at Washington and USC? That same Sark?
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:10 PM ^
Ah yes, the guy with a bad history of being a drunk WHILE COACHING at his previous two stops and a mediocre record at two good programs.
Weird how you’ve been critical of Matt Campbell recently, yet you want a much less impressive head coach (doing less than Campbell while being at better programs) with an added drinking problem.
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:21 PM ^
If teams keep taking chances on coaches like Sark, I’m sure JH can quickly and easily land somewhere else. Now that the NFL regular season is over, I expect coaching dominoes to start falling.
January 2nd, 2021 at 12:34 PM ^
All I’m going to say is, NFL teams have given guys like Adam Gase multiple chances. Josh McDaniels continues to be a hot coaching name. Gruden got a monster deal after not coaching in any capacity in 10 years.
Regardless of what Harbaugh has done at Michigan, with his success in the NFL there are going to be teams willing to give him a chance. It’s simply a matter of whether Jim wants to take those jobs or not.
Black Monday was always the timeline where we would start to hear SOMETHING on the Jim Harbaugh front. We’ll know which NFL jobs are open and which coaches are being linked with them.
