Is this your own personal opinion? Did someone of importance say this? Should I already know? Is this good or bad?
Very thought provoking post.

Well, we haven't gotten any mention of Mazi Smith's name and we're basically just throwing names at receivers hoping to knock down a few balls...
Every thread about worrisome depth charts needs someone bringing up Mazi.
October 12th, 2020 at 9:53 PM ^
This is wrong he’s been mentioned by the coaches multiple times. Including today.
October 12th, 2020 at 9:57 PM ^
They only bring up Mazi when they drop every name on the D line.
October 13th, 2020 at 5:12 AM ^
Don't say I haven't done anything for you. This is from Harbaugh on the Jon Jansen show:
“Also, Luiji Vilain, looking for him to have a very good year. Taylor Upshaw is surging as a player. Also say Julius Welschof, keep an eye on him. He’s coming into his own. Mike Morris, Mazi Smith, Gabe Newburg – really turning into great football players.
October 13th, 2020 at 8:49 AM ^
Mentioned with the true freshmen at the end of a sentence with every name in it. Not sure that bodes so well for young Mr. Smith... Hopefully, it's all motivational and he'll give us plenty to be happy about this year.
October 13th, 2020 at 9:19 AM ^
Or next year. I've been concerned about not hearing his name too, and sure, you'd want a guy who's going to be an All-American to start busting out soon, but it is only his 2nd year. He could still be a very good player.

This is either very good, very bad, or somewhere in the middle.
October 12th, 2020 at 8:08 PM ^
I think it is middle/not good. I would hope that someone is standing out/separating themselves at the CB2 position. Looks like they are trying all the possible bodies.
October 12th, 2020 at 8:27 PM ^
It’s bad. A late camp position switch because you can’t find a starter is not good. The only thing keeping it from very bad is that Faustin’s name had come up as a top performer, so maybe they’re trying to get him on the field, and the difference between safety and corner isn’t huge.
October 13th, 2020 at 8:11 AM ^
The difference between corner and safety isn't huge? That's got to be one of the more ridiculous things I've heard in a while. I would compare the 2 to RB and WR. One position requires a lot more hip flexibility and the other requires a lot more physicality. One you play with your back to the ball a lot more and the other you keep everything in front of you and you play more with your eyes. Very different positions, that's why the switch is difficult.
October 13th, 2020 at 9:22 AM ^
Except that Brown has said repeatedly safeties in his system need to be able to cover. Zone coverage for CBs still involves plenty of playing with your eyes.
October 13th, 2020 at 9:30 AM ^
Needing to be able to cover and actually doing it are two different things. Ask Josh Mettellus and Tyree Kinnel.
October 13th, 2020 at 1:59 PM ^
I don't think this comparison is wrong, per se. But there is some overlap in skill sets with WR and RB like there is with CB and safety. Take for instance guys like Curtis Samuel, Percy Harvin, Giles Jackson, Corderelle Patterson, James White, etc.
There are physical corners that can play safety (Marlin Jackson) and fluid hipped safeties that can cover. Now, does Michigan necessarily have one of those guys? Dunno. This is definitely bad. But it might not be very bad is the guys point.
October 13th, 2020 at 12:35 PM ^
I mean you're right but it's not complete insanity like, oh.....I dunno, something as nutty as having your starting fullback play defensive line.
I mean a switch of that zaniness would mean the wheels have completely come off the wagon.
October 12th, 2020 at 10:49 PM ^
Toby, can I call you Toby, you thought it was a great sign with Ulizio, did you not?

Yeah. I was wrong.

the show must go on....
October 12th, 2020 at 8:10 PM ^
Hmm, you make a good point. I'll have to reconsider.
October 12th, 2020 at 9:54 PM ^
We have no idea when this switch was made. Just because this was the first mention of it, doesn’t mean much. Also- he could have been a great cover safety. It’s not like they don’t have those duties and he’s switching from offense.
October 12th, 2020 at 9:59 PM ^
Maybe Dax can man both spots
October 13th, 2020 at 1:08 PM ^
Well Don Brown was on the radio last week saying Faustin was competing at S in a backup capacity...so it may be safe to say this switch has been fairly recent
October 12th, 2020 at 8:12 PM ^
I thought Faustin was getting crazy hype at safety?
October 13th, 2020 at 8:32 AM ^
It's fall so staff is moving players around to to see what they can do at other positions. Also may have other safeties also having great fall camps and corner needs help.. So take the player with the better skill set to try corner and give it a go.
October 13th, 2020 at 9:23 AM ^
That's usually a spring thing, not a less than 2 weeks before kickoff thing.
October 13th, 2020 at 9:34 AM ^
It you have 4 corners, you have no corners.
But you do have a square.
October 12th, 2020 at 8:10 PM ^
I don’t know what to say.
October 12th, 2020 at 8:12 PM ^
I am thinking this has a chance to be the most heavily upvoted post here in quite a while.
October 12th, 2020 at 8:24 PM ^
Isn't that always the case? It hasn't stopped you before...
October 12th, 2020 at 9:31 PM ^
I know what to say. We’re in trouble at the corners and it’s really important to keep our safety position group as strong as possible. 4 players competing for a starting job is bad business.
October 13th, 2020 at 10:14 AM ^
Funny, because the one person we haven't heard from is Zordich.

He must be good in zone coverage and that’s the route Don Brown has taken??
October 12th, 2020 at 9:27 PM ^
Can't remember the exact number, but IIRC they ran around 50% zone last season.
October 12th, 2020 at 9:44 PM ^
Agreed. I'd be shocked if that doesn't go to 60-70% this year since Ambry is gone.
October 13th, 2020 at 1:21 PM ^
It'd be nice if they disguised it a little too. I don't like defenses that line up for 20 seconds so the QB can call the play all nice and tidy against the defense's alignment. I believe Jean-Mary is a zone blitz guy so maybe it'll be a little better this year in that regard.
See Georgia's defense for exciting and confusing.
