But "starring" makes sense, as in starring in.
February 13th, 2020 at 9:20 AM ^
For a second, I thought he had a starring role in a marijuana movie. Mitch and Chong.

Hell yeah. I'd like to be in this movie.

February 13th, 2020 at 9:21 AM ^
Pretty sure Mitch has been highly involved in the marijuana business for a while now.
February 13th, 2020 at 9:28 AM ^
And the coke business.
When he was at Michigan he would hang around dispensary folk who were not even Michigan students, let alone other student-athletes. I don't care if you smoke, but I thought the crowd he rolled with was strange for someone who supposedly had serious basketball aspirations.
February 13th, 2020 at 9:33 AM ^
It's too bad. I hope he is happy and that he is successful at this, but I think he could have had a real career in the NBA if he had taken basketball as seriously as he could have. He reminded me a little bit of Dennis Rodman with more touch around the basket. I think he could have been a really unique and electrifying player if he could have kept his head in the game.
February 13th, 2020 at 9:42 AM ^
Someone using marijuana on the regular and being disinterested / lazy at his job. Never heard of such a thing.
February 13th, 2020 at 9:50 AM ^
Yeah it just makes me wonder how much he actually liked basketball. It has always blown my mind when I have met people who are incredibly talented and simultaneously disinterested in a thing. I went to high school with someone who received D1 offers to play 3 different sports and played no sports in college. I understand that plenty of people don't care for sports, but it just seems so funny/cruel to be highly gifted in something you don't have interest in.
February 13th, 2020 at 10:56 AM ^
He didn’t ask to be 6 foot 10. Damn I wish I was though.
February 13th, 2020 at 11:55 AM ^
I wish I was a little bit taller. I wish I was a baller.
February 13th, 2020 at 12:03 PM ^
I'm not quite 6'10", but as a tall dude, I can tell you the fun wears off after about 25. At 35 it's mild nagging pain everywhere, uncomfortable plane rides, and constant online order and returns trying to find clothes that actually fit. It was cool being tall when I was younger, but I wouldn't mind shrinking down to about 6'2" now.
February 13th, 2020 at 12:56 PM ^
Give it time. You'll get there.
February 14th, 2020 at 9:07 AM ^
6'4" at 43 years old. Very active, but starting to feel the fun with age. Knees are structurally sound, but sore/inflamed much of the time. My hips feel like shit.
I don't fit in half the cars that are made. Buying shirts has always been a nightmare. Plane rides are a shit show.
Yeah, sure, I could stand to lose a few pounds. Leave me alone.
February 13th, 2020 at 1:18 PM ^
Hey Dr., I'll provide one perspective.
I received music scholarships for college even though I never sent a single application or performed for them (from what I have been told, that is extremely rare). While I enjoyed music, I had a lot of other interests. I played basketball, I enjoyed learning, and had an active social life. I didn't accept any of the music scholarships, much to my parents dismay, because I didn't want to commit the time and dedication expected of having the scholarship. Basketball and school took a lot of time and I also didn't want to major in music.
I played in an ensemble for two years in college and when I decided to quit, I didn't feel bad about it. The professors in the music department were disappointed but they were not upset with me because they knew I had always only been doing it for fun. I am still active musically but I am forever thankful I did not make it my career or the primary focus of my life. And yes, my Mom is still upset about it all.
February 13th, 2020 at 3:47 PM ^
Yeah I'm sure your small mind was BLOWN!
Imagine going through life, where ever since you were a little kid all your family, friends, and people around you talk about is basketball, all you do is play basketball, and all you plan for is basketball. Then you get to college and all you study is basketball, someone takes most of the fun out of it and makes it your job instead of your passion.
Now go home and eat meatloaf for 7 days straight... and lets see if you can continue this for 10 years.
Why do you think the average student changes majors... oh 4x's (or at least that was the number when I was in college)
February 13th, 2020 at 3:54 PM ^
Totally agree. Just cause I got an 11 inch mannschaft doesn't mean I have to do porn. Though I do...

February 13th, 2020 at 11:40 AM ^
Is it really too bad, though? Country could use a lot more legal/safe/accessible weed and a lot less opiods/benzos. If the bit of money he made in the NBA can help public health, it's a larger positive than the entertainment value of his likely NBA benchwarmer status could have provided.
February 13th, 2020 at 9:36 AM ^
i can't imagine making that trade - drugs for athletics, but i guess it takes all types.
February 13th, 2020 at 9:39 AM ^
It doesn't though, really.

Ricky Williams says HIGH!
February 13th, 2020 at 11:29 AM ^
and it cost him years of his career.
February 13th, 2020 at 1:56 PM ^
Weed didn't cost Williams years of his career. He had psychological issues he was attempting to medicate with weed. The psychological issues cost him years of his career.
February 13th, 2020 at 8:04 PM ^
It might not have. Yes, he missed two seasons and most of a third during the middle of his career. But he also played (and was productive) through his age-34 season, whereas most RBs hit the wall around age 30. It's not hard to draw a possible connection between the extra longevity and not taking a beating during the latter half of his 20s. He also had severe social anxiety problems, which were probably more of a factor in his first temporary retirement than the drugs themselves.
February 13th, 2020 at 10:52 AM ^
You probably can't imagine it because there's really no need to make a 'trade'. Addicts have trouble making that distinction though.
February 13th, 2020 at 12:56 PM ^
Cannabis is no more of a drug than sugar or caffeine. Betting most of those who criticize it have a sugar addiction considering 90% of the food nowadays is total garbage.
Not a smoker but many now use it as a form of medicine over wicked pharmaceuticals and it's about 100x as safer for those who use it for recreationally compared to alcohol.
February 13th, 2020 at 3:09 PM ^
"Cannabis is no more of a drug than sugar or caffeine."
This is objectively untrue. No one is losing jobs over sugar or caffeine. Addiction is defined by consequences not frequency of use.
February 13th, 2020 at 7:13 PM ^
If consequences define addiction, then sugar hill (pun intended) is not the hill you want to die on. Sugar is known to exacerbate nearly every human disease.
February 13th, 2020 at 6:00 PM ^
I am a proponent of marijuana, and when people say shit like this, it sounds so dumb. It’s all relative, and that’s true, but putting marijuana into the same bucket as sugar and caffeine is just silly.
Marijuana is far more psychoactive than sugar or a cup of coffee. Marijuana dramatically alters a persons state of consciousness. It has lots of different effects on different people, and can be quite dangerous for those who are not well suited to it. It can lead to Bipolar disorder and Schizophrenia in some. It’s a potential dangerous substance, especially if used improperly, and does carry risk. It’s better than alcohol, but still far from sugar.
February 13th, 2020 at 7:53 PM ^
That depends on the demon you are addressing. As temporary mind alteration goes, yes, cannibis has a much more drastic effect. If we're looking at the bigger picture, sugar does a much wider range of damage to the human body. It's really an apples to oranges comparison though. A strong point to make is that caffeine and sugar are no better for your body (arguably worse) than cannibis, yet they are common staples in nearly every diet.

From watching Mitch do coke in college. Responding to the guy saying Mitch has been smoking marijuana since college.

So you are saying the NCAA suspension may have been more of a "lifetime achievement award" from the NCAA as opposed to a suspension for a one time positive pot test?
February 13th, 2020 at 10:04 AM ^
Yeah, it was Jake Butt's Mackey Award. He was deserving, but for prior years' service.
February 13th, 2020 at 9:55 AM ^
Maybe his nickname should be cocaine Mitch.
February 13th, 2020 at 10:51 AM ^
I was back in town for Memorial Day 2015 at the Blue Lep. Mitch was there (this was when he was in the NBA). I was using the bathroom downstairs and next to me throwing up in the urinal was Mitch. Hope he made some decent money during his short stint in the NBA
February 13th, 2020 at 8:07 PM ^
$4.4 million according to Spotrac. Not saying he hung onto most of it, but if he even hung onto a portion of it, that's a nice nest egg to start a business.
February 13th, 2020 at 4:44 PM ^
Let’s be honest, McGary isn’t very book smart and I’m pretty sure he has even less common sense. He reminds me of Zach Randolph, just without the NBA career and some of the legal issues.
February 13th, 2020 at 9:43 AM ^
Yeah anyone who thinks the NCAA busted him on the first time he smoked weed is...well high.
