Zordich a Candidate at Youngstown State
Per Football Scoop: https://footballscoop.com/news/update-at-youngstown-state/
Zordich grew up in Youngstown and started his coaching career there. Update doesn’t give any sort of odds. Don Treadwell is also a candidate. Job opened up with Bo Pelini’s return to LSU and inability to ensure his brother Carl would get the gig.
this would, in my opinion, be as big a blow to the on field product as Partridge was to recruiting, if it happened. Zordich would also be my favorite in house DC candidate in the event of a change.

Zordich is a smart guy. don't think he'd make this move
February 4th, 2020 at 2:10 PM ^
I think the only reason he would make this move is if he wanted a quick path to a head coaching gig at a P5 school and saw this as a chance to have a resume builder. Would imagine the pay would be similar to what he has now.

It would suck to lose him, but thankfully this article names him along with several other coaches. It also doesn't really say any of these names are close to becoming the next head coach.
I also wouldn't put it past Tressel to specifically not hire a Michigan assistant coach.
February 4th, 2020 at 2:04 PM ^
Or maybe Tressel would hire a Michigan coach just to fuck us over. Seems to be SOP in that shit filled state.

+1. The hill I'm willing to die on is that Ryan Day hired Mattison and Washington not for on-field production, but rather because they were our main Ohio recruiters. Losing them eliminated the last of our Ohio recruiting pipeline that Hoke rebuilt/Harbaugh maintained after Rich Rod, setting us back to square one in that state.

Sullivan gets the job. Book it.

Who did they get out of Ohio?
February 4th, 2020 at 3:06 PM ^
Zach Harrison whose main UM recruiter was Mattison.
It's not so much who they get, so much as who we won't get in the near future.
February 6th, 2020 at 8:31 AM ^
We didn't get him either, so what's the difference?
February 6th, 2020 at 2:15 PM ^
We had 2 guys with serious Ohio recruiting chops in 2018. We have none now. It's pretty straightforward.
February 4th, 2020 at 2:17 PM ^
The bright side is we would have the opportunity to upgrade on the recruiting front.

Zordich did not begin his coaching career at Youngstown St. He was an assistant at Cardinal Mooney HS for five years, then spent another 4 years on the Eagles staff, the last two as safeties coach. He was a coach at YSU for one season in 2014.
I know that head coaching jobs are normally considered higher on the food chain than position coaches, but I'm not convinced the reality of becoming HC at YSU is that much better than where he's at now. Unless he really wants to return to Youngstown, seems like a step down to me.
February 4th, 2020 at 2:23 PM ^
Yeah, this entirely depends on how much he wants to be a head coach. It's analogous to Beilein taking the Cavs job.
February 4th, 2020 at 2:29 PM ^
I’m not sure you understand what the word analogous means.
February 4th, 2020 at 2:33 PM ^
Beilein took the Cavs job bc he fundamentally viewed any NBA head coach job as better than a college head coach job, so he took the first one offered.
Zordich will take the YSU job (if offered) if he fundamentally views any college head coach job better than a college position coach job.
How'd I do?
February 4th, 2020 at 3:23 PM ^
Poorly, it's still a bad analogy
February 4th, 2020 at 6:40 PM ^
Beilein is at the tail end of his career and by all accounts was burnt out on college coaching. He had an opportunity to try coaching in the pros and was not guaranteed another chance given his age. It is hard to see him envisioning the Cavs job as a stepping stone.
Zordich is a much younger coach looking to move up. If he leaves, it is because he decides this opportunity is more likely to help him move up to another job after Youngstown State.
Completely different set of circumstances, but I guess they are both coaches, so you got that going for you.

Which is nice

YSU has definitely fallen off lately.
They (and Marshall) basically owned D-1AA in the 1990s. But in the entire 2010s, Youngstown State only made the FCS playoffs once. One time, and that's despite the FCS playoffs taking 24 schools these days.
15 years ago, I would have argued that job was just as good as a top-tier MAC school. I agree with you that it's a step down.

And Georgia Southern
February 4th, 2020 at 6:43 PM ^
True - I remembered Georgia Southern as more of a team of the 1980s. But looking it up they did win 2 titles in the 1990s.
February 4th, 2020 at 3:36 PM ^
That’s the first time anyone uttered the words “Unless he really wants to return to Youngstown”. Even by Ohio stands Youngstown is without a doubt one of the worst places to live anywhere.
February 4th, 2020 at 2:30 PM ^
He's a really good coach but an equally bad recruiter. Seems like he could be upgraded all things considered.
February 4th, 2020 at 2:47 PM ^
I do not think Zordich would really be on the radar as a defensive coordinator for Michigan. He seems like a guy who could very well be a position coach permanently.
February 4th, 2020 at 4:12 PM ^
Don't think Zordich is in the 1% of assistant coaches who are content at not moving up. He does seem like a patient guy and very loyal. Also think he's learned at lot at Michigan under DJ Dirken, Don Brown and Harbaugh which means to me, he qualified to be a DC at Michigan-he's payed his dues.
February 4th, 2020 at 4:07 PM ^
Hopefully, Harbaugh will keep Zordich from leaving. As long as Michigan pays more than Y'Town State, he should remain here.
Having a DC position at Michigan in 2021 would be good enough reason to stay.
February 4th, 2020 at 4:52 PM ^
I think Bob Shoop would be first in line if the DC job is open in 2021.
