he's got some wiggle, that's for sure. what are his measurables, e.g., his 40, vertical, etc?
February 4th, 2020 at 8:19 AM ^
Congratulations to Jake !
I know the family well as my son played at Staples with Jake's older brother. Long line of DBs in the Thaw family (brothers both starters at D3 Wesleyan). Jake was thrust into the QB role because of his athleticism but his natural positions are DB and WR. Made the Walter Camp first team all-state at DB which is a big deal in CT. Versatile athlete who could see the field on special teams after a year in the conditioning program. Definitely scout team contributor.
Staples plays in same league as Darien and New Canaan where Stueber and Stewart, respectively, come from. Decent competition with some D1 recruits but mostly the players head to the Ivy or NESCAC leagues for the high academics.

Pretty cool to see a kid from Staples headed to UM. When I was there, football was terrible. I see things have changed! I believe my senior year we won one game back in the day. Staples used to send a ton of kids to UM. Hopefully that's still the case. The old swimming and math teacher, Mr Rollins, showed me the way back in 5th grade when he said, "If UM wins on Sat, no quiz, if they lose, math quiz on Monday." I think my class alone there were like 12 kids who went w me to UM. Sadly Mr Rollins passed in 2011 and I will always be thankful and credit him for planting the seed. Anyway, congrats to Jake and happy to see another Wrecker heading to UM!

Shifty, to say the least. What position does he project best to?
February 3rd, 2020 at 9:48 PM ^
I would try him at slot receiver first. I'm not sure he would have much of a chance to contribute elsewhere.
February 3rd, 2020 at 9:54 PM ^
We are deep at that position. But, based on the film, I would not sell this kid short. He has some wiggle and instincts!
February 4th, 2020 at 8:03 AM ^
That's weird -- "deep at the position" and "wiggle and instincts" are commonly how my wife describes me to her friends.
February 4th, 2020 at 8:45 AM ^
scruffy, remember, pride comes before the fall...
February 4th, 2020 at 11:37 AM ^
Are these descriptions "based on the film"?
February 3rd, 2020 at 9:54 PM ^
Perhaps he’s the one to finally thaw Maizen’s cold cold heart. Congratulations to the young man.
February 4th, 2020 at 7:49 AM ^
LOL!!! Maizen expects walk-on's to 3-starz prospects, or we'll never compete with anyone. We should only sign 5-starz, but can consider high 4-starz in a pinch (ie: if we fail on a preferred 5-star).
Maizen... I'm sure one of his many persona's will show up now that we've said the name three times.
February 4th, 2020 at 8:16 AM ^
I mean, he's not wrong. He's just an asshole. More talent wins you more games.
February 4th, 2020 at 8:43 AM ^
"He's not wrong, he's just an asshole......"
That's probably what ends up on my headstone.
February 3rd, 2020 at 9:56 PM ^
Russell Wilson is generously listed at 5'10. Not to say he's anything like him.. but size isn't everything at QB. Though I do suppose the slot position would be a great start. Could always use a faster Drew Dilleo? For spelling purposes only.
February 3rd, 2020 at 10:06 PM ^
Russell Wilson measured in at 5'11" at the NFL Combine.
February 3rd, 2020 at 10:53 PM ^
Lol yeah Russell Wilson is legit 5”11. Murray is the midget.
February 3rd, 2020 at 10:25 PM ^
Serious question, why not put this kid at holder for fgs? I never understood why you don't have an athlete holding fgs. It opens up the fake fg package.
February 3rd, 2020 at 10:55 PM ^
Yeah might as well. Although I always thought just going for it on 4th down was better than a fake.
February 4th, 2020 at 8:35 AM ^
I agree with this. Just line up and put your best athletes in a position to make a play.
February 3rd, 2020 at 10:30 PM ^
he made all state lists as a DB fwiw
February 3rd, 2020 at 10:33 PM ^
He also looks like he could walk on in basketball too.....I'd take him over Brooks.
February 4th, 2020 at 7:54 AM ^
Yeah, okay... You'll play a high school kid based on a few bball highlights for a football walk-on over a guy that's starting for a nationally respected B1G team that's gone pretty deep in the NCAA tourney the last few years.
Can I just add that I'm happy you're not on Juwan's staff? I'm happy that you're not on Juwan's staff...

The perfect weapon to defeat Scott Frost.
February 3rd, 2020 at 10:38 PM ^
This is the one.
February 3rd, 2020 at 10:42 PM ^
Looks like he could be pretty successful as a QB in DIII or II in the right kind of offense. Has really nice change-of-direction without losing acceleration.
February 3rd, 2020 at 10:56 PM ^
I’m sure he could....but if you go to college to play a d2 or d3 sport you got your priorities messed up.
February 4th, 2020 at 6:20 AM ^
I played D3 football, and I think my priorities are ok.
February 4th, 2020 at 7:38 AM ^
That’s the kind of comment I expect from you.
February 4th, 2020 at 8:11 AM ^
Duncan Robinson disagrees with you. So do all these division 2 players who made 2019 NFL rosters.
https://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2019-09-04/2019-nfl-rosters-…
February 4th, 2020 at 8:16 AM ^
Well, that's just all kinds of incorrect.
That's an impressively bad take, not least of which is that a ton of good coaches come from the DII and DIII levels, including John Beilein, Bill Belichick, etc.
February 4th, 2020 at 8:38 AM ^
Gucci I don't agree with a lot you say, but this is probably the biggest example of that.
February 4th, 2020 at 11:26 AM ^
"this is probably the biggest example of that."
A negative ninety-nine point nine million points says you're right.
February 3rd, 2020 at 10:51 PM ^
Looks like a good little athlete. CT isn't known for great football but Michigan has had some success plucking guys out of there (Tarik Black, Cornelius Johnson, and Luke Schoonmaker most recently). He's obviously a level below those guys but UM probably has a decent view of the talent level in the area and how that translates to D1.
February 3rd, 2020 at 11:41 PM ^
There are lots of reasons to take PWO's. The best being there is no downside. If he doesn't work out so be it. But, these kids do have some talent and a lot of heart so who knows? Maybe Thaw will be a great scout team player. Maybe he can be the holder. There are lots of ways to be a contributor.
February 3rd, 2020 at 11:41 PM ^
Looks like he'd make a pretty good running back to me. Great balance and vision, moves his feet real well, was breaking some tackles also. Competition probably has something to do with that as well.
February 4th, 2020 at 12:49 AM ^
Hell yeah!
February 4th, 2020 at 7:39 AM ^
I thaw him play a couple of games. He theems like a thlick little bugger.
February 4th, 2020 at 8:17 AM ^
Tuesday morning drinking thread!
February 4th, 2020 at 10:36 AM ^
Always good to add more guys who can help the program whether it be in the Big House, on the practice field or in the weight room. Even if he never plays a snap in the Big House I bet he more than contributes his share of value on the practice field over the next four years.
February 4th, 2020 at 12:50 PM ^
If he doesn’t grace us in games, he is a great scout team option for RPO teams
February 6th, 2020 at 6:10 PM ^
The crazy part of all this, is when you watch the tape, and plays: QB, RB, DB, LB, S, WR , he's clearly dominating the field at HS level that he's playing, and a kid like this doesn't even have a profile in 247. It's crazy. It gives an appreciation for how insanely talented the 4 & 5 star players are. I've said it forever. If you're playing any sport at any level in college, chances are good, you were one of , if not the best , player on your HS team. All these college athletes are studs. Hard to know if he'll be able to break through and ever see the field at UM, but you have to love an attitude of a PWO who isn't afraid to go toe to toe with big time recruits. They know what they're walking into. Best of luck to him. I do like the idea someone had of placeholder as a way to see the field.
