Partridge officially leaves for Ole Miss
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:08 AM ^
Also crazy that they thought it was a good idea to hire Durkin
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:09 AM ^
ole miss gon ole miss
January 2nd, 2020 at 12:11 PM ^
I would love to know how this decision was made.
AD: Now, we just hired Lane Kiffin. He has a bit of a reputation problem, so who can we hire as an assistant to mitigate this?
Employee A: How ‘bout the guy who got fired from his last job for working a player to death?
AD: Just when I thought you couldn't get any dumber, you go and suggest something like this... and totally redeem yourself!
January 3rd, 2020 at 10:59 PM ^
So we lost Partridge because some dumb ass kid faked dog pissing in the end zone.
January 2nd, 2020 at 4:28 PM ^
Durkin was very sloppy and lost it in his drive to win... and it cost someone his life... he is culpable and so is many of the staff... very unfortunate. But he deserves another chance.
January 2nd, 2020 at 5:48 PM ^
The kid he helped kill deserves another chance. Durkin does not
January 3rd, 2020 at 7:04 AM ^
Not at all surprising. Kiffin had Briles' son on his coaching staff.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:09 AM ^
At least we have Don Brown still lol
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:12 AM ^
Damn. That's a kick in the nuts.
January 2nd, 2020 at 2:16 PM ^
Now that the Paramus catholic well has dried up, Partridge is a liability for NJ recruiting. partridge seemed pretty good, but not elite, in the south.
i think he’s absolutely awful as a special teams coach.
January 2nd, 2020 at 5:36 PM ^
I've heard the ST complain a few times recently, what's the reasoning for this? I haven't noticed any glaring issues in that phase other than Brad Robbins ended up being terrible and college kickers pulled some college kicker stuff.
Otherwise, we block a decent amount of kicks and seem to have a decent return game.
I'm by no means an authority, just curious what others are seeing differently.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:13 AM ^
Welp at least they may be able to steal (*buy) recruits from Bama and LSU.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:14 AM ^
I think fans will overreact to his departure a bit. He’s getting a promotion. Unless we were willing to promote him, I doubt we could hang onto him much longer. His recruiting will be missed, but it’s something we can replace if we find the right assistant to replace him.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:45 AM ^
Harbaugh found Partridge. People forget that. He can find another guy like him.
But this is just another blow in yet another miserable end to a season.
January 2nd, 2020 at 12:26 PM ^
Yes, his name is Devin Bush,Sr.
January 2nd, 2020 at 12:57 PM ^
Didn’t Harbaugh “find Partridge” so he could land Rashan Gary?
January 2nd, 2020 at 4:07 PM ^
Possibly. so?
January 2nd, 2020 at 12:11 PM ^
To add to that, how do you get a coaching tree to tap into if you don’t let them go off and grow?
Also, it’s not like he went to OSU or PSU.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:15 AM ^
Sigh......luckily we own the State of Rhode Island in recruiting so I'm sure Donnie B will more than make up for everything.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:15 AM ^
Look for Devin Bush Sr to get a serious look as a candidate. He fits what Michigan needs and probably will be an elite recruiter as well. Also probably a better safety coach overall to be honest. Partridge has never coached safeties, but they moved him when Anthony came aboard. For all the people who were mad about the defense this year, safety was the biggest concern. Not saying Partridge can’t coach, just saying he wasn’t the best safety coach in America. He made up for that though with his recruiting.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:18 AM ^
I'd be on board with an elite recruiter with ties to our program. Where is he now?
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:38 AM ^
Why must they have ties to the Michigan program? I want the best coach possible, regardless if they are in the program or not.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:49 AM ^
Sorry. I wasn't clear.
I don't care if they have ties or not per se. I care he's an excellent recruiter.
The only way in which I care about the ties to the program is to me it seems like we might have a better chance of getting him.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:49 AM ^
Just guessing, but that poster probably likes the idea of "ties to the program" because it leads him to believe the coach is more likely to accept a position here.
January 2nd, 2020 at 12:50 PM ^
Correct.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:57 AM ^
He never once got blamed for sub par safety play. When was the last time Jim hired a bad assistant to replace someone that's left? I believe Sherrone Moore was an upgrade. I believe Shaun Nua will end up being an upgrade. Campanile should be able to recruit the East as well as Partridge did.
January 2nd, 2020 at 12:00 PM ^
Campanile will be departing too.
January 2nd, 2020 at 12:25 PM ^
This is a bigger loss than Partridge overall in a 5 year projection if you ask me. I assumed he was leaving as that is what I’d heard. Any chances you know who might be looked at to replace him? Would Hoke get a look? He’s defensive line coach at San Diego State where he was head coach. So he’s humble enough to accept, and he’s probably been Michigan’s best recruiter over the last twenty years. I assume Devin Bush Sr will be looked at for a promotion for safety coach, which I think is a plus.
January 2nd, 2020 at 2:18 PM ^
I know most will probably ‘neg’ you for the idea, but I don’t hate it. Don’t think it will happen, mostly because Nua is still here and that would be where Hoke “fits”.
Another poster mentioned Mike Hart. I really hope that gets traction, hire him for RB coach, Upgrade Bush to LB’s/ST and reassign Jay Harbaugh to where Bush isn’t.
January 2nd, 2020 at 2:44 PM ^
When will this one be announced?
January 3rd, 2020 at 7:07 AM ^
Is that just a promotion at a different school thing? I thought Campanile coached under Brown before, so you wouldn't think there would be issues with him and the rest of the coaching staff since they already knew who he was.
January 2nd, 2020 at 1:04 PM ^
Good coaches will have their assistants poached sometimes, but the great coaches replace them with better assistants. Harbaugh has an opportunity here:
If they lose Partridge and Campanile that will hurt NJ recruiting, but it opens up two spots on staff. Would like to see them:
1. Hire Bush, Sr. as a Safety Coach. Dude knows the position and would probably be a good recruiter. Has ties to Florida.
2. Promote Little Harbaugh to Special Teams coordinator. I believe he assisted Partridge with that. He could follow a similar path as uncle John as a special teams coach.
3. Find an elite LB coach and recruiter. Great coaches find other great coaches. Another poster mentioned finding someone with West Coast or Texas ties, and that a great plan.
January 2nd, 2020 at 7:46 PM ^
I like this idea of finding an elite LB coach, along with finding a great up and coming recruiter. A key position.
January 2nd, 2020 at 2:25 PM ^
Devin Bush Sr is very relatable to recruits. He was once a highly rated recruit, his son was a coveted recruit, he played in NFL and has been at Michigan in some capacity for several years. Hope he is a leading candidate to replace Partridge.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:21 AM ^
It's unfortunate to lose him as a recruiter, but giving him the DC job would have been unsound. I know people are frustrated with Don Brown, but he would be extremely hard to replace. Few DCs have matched what he's done over the past four years. It's just that we're in an era in which everyone gives up lots of points at times.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:30 AM ^
Interesting Georgia just did it with a thirty-three-year-old position coach and it worked out fine as their defense improved.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:41 AM ^
They have one of the best defensive coordinators of the last twenty years as there head coach though. So he can take a risk letting someone run the defense, because if it goes poorly he was able to take it over.
January 2nd, 2020 at 1:57 PM ^
more than just giving up lots of points. He's rolled up good defensive stats against lesser teams. Look at when they've faced osu, psu (with healthy McSorely and Barkley), Wisconsin with a competent QB, FL last year, FSU, etc. His D did ok yesterday but they were pretty much responsible for the other 3 losses this year IMHO.
January 2nd, 2020 at 2:23 PM ^
What did the offense do in those loses? Other than nothing, anyway?
Fave the times - elite, or very good teams, are going to score a lot of points. CFB rules are geared towards high scoring, and you have to score 35-40 to have a chance. The days of elite, top 10 defenses holding top 10 offenses to 24 points are long gone.
Browns defense held fucking Alabama’s 5-star offense to 21 points until 10 minutes left. If the offense would have done it’s job, that game was a win.
Yet, you put all the blame on Don Brown for everything. Brilliant.
January 2nd, 2020 at 3:10 PM ^
ok so you're good with giving up about 130 pts to osu in 2 games along with the drubbing by wisky (never gave the offense a chance). And, 3 TDs vs psu were from exploited mismatches in coverage which is a recurring theme with his defense. Notice on Wed how a freshman safety was left to cover the best WR in college football 1 on 1? How bout a slow safety getting torched twice by KJ Hamler? And Hudson on an athletic TE? Metellus getting embarassed by Hamler was a back breaker in that game.
January 2nd, 2020 at 4:44 PM ^
Come on. It was only 118 points. Don't exaggerate.
January 2nd, 2020 at 6:28 PM ^
Yeah. If the offense puts up 35, the defense doesn’t give up so many because they aren’t on the field so much and the game dynamics are changed. Do you even watch CFB, or are you just parroting the box score?
January 2nd, 2020 at 5:48 PM ^
Want to follow up on your hammering me about "Jaybaugh" (lame).
Jay is an excellent recruiter and I never said he wasn't. The reason I prefer a change is because he hasn't shown the ability to develop the talent he gets on campus. That's why I like Mike Hart who brings the same energy in recruiting and has actually developed some RBs ala Tyrone Wheatley.
Huge difference.
January 2nd, 2020 at 6:33 PM ^
He turned Gentry into a pretty good TE. Butt won the Mackey Award under him. ZC learned to pick up blitzes pretty well. Hassan Haskins went from #4 to the starting RB during the season. I mean, I’m not sure where he’s shown he can’t develop players.
Hell, Giles Jackson took over the kick return duties on ST as a true freshmen.
You don’t like the guy, whatever...
January 2nd, 2020 at 8:48 PM ^
Gentry plays TE...I never said he wasn't a good TE coach. I said he doesn't develop RBs the way we need them developed.
What can't you comprehend about that?
That has NOTHING to do with Jake Butt or Zach Gentry.
I watched Tyrone Wheatley turn De'Veon Smith from a 3 yard battering ram with NO vision whatsoever to what we witnessed in that game versus Florida.
Go back and check the UFRs, read Brian's comments, etc. - Smith was somewhat of a revelation.
Look at our team rushing numbers in Wheatley's last year after 1 year with our group and look at what "JayHar" has done. 1 less TD per game. Less yards per game. Higdon didn't even get better...he just got more carries and did this same thing with them (which was solid).
Our OL has been as good as it's been in years the past couple of years. So it isn't that...
We had 3 guys fumbling all over the place for the first half of this season. Sure Haskins was solid...what do we have to compare it against? Outside of stopping the fumbles..did he get better over the course of this year? He developed? Improved?
I'm being honest because the numbers don't suggest it. Look for yourself.
https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/hassan-haskins-1/gamelog/2…
...so yeah I think you can still get a strong recruiter. The primary role of a RB coach. Just like we had with Wheatley and we have with "BaughJay" - but you can develop the guys and I feel there are better options out there. I feel Hart brings everything "HarJayBaugh" brings plus a proven ability to develop guys.
IU stays with a RB who gets better and gives Michigan fits in most years. Not only can he get Charbonnet to Michigan...I think he could turn him into Mike Hart 2.0.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:21 AM ^
Cool. We still went 9-4 with him as a positional coach this season. Good for him for getting paid.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:25 AM ^
Just from a recruiting standpoint we've taken 2 huge hits in the last year. Mattison and Partridge were outstanding recruiters, and that could be the biggest hit we take from their loss.
January 2nd, 2020 at 11:29 AM ^
Recruiting is only a small piece of the puzzle. If you dont have a coaching staff who is capable of coaching those high star recruits, it doesnt really mean anything. Give me a coaching staff who can groom 2-3 star kids into 5 stars over a staff who is "known" for their successful recruiting abilities.
