Harbaugh should get 1 more year to win the Big Ten, otherwise, what are we doing here?
1 top ten finish, 1-4 bowl record, zero big ten titles, zero wins against OSU.
He's not even an elite recruiter like John Cooper was, and he's most certainly not an elite x's and o's coach.
Minnesota is better than us guys. Minnesota. Minnesota who has hardly anything to sell and hasn't won the big ten in nearly 60 years. We're on our way to becoming the new Minnesota.
I'm not willing to support a program that thinks we should be grateful for a 10 win ceiling, but yet increases ticket prices every other year like we're elite.
January 1st, 2020 at 4:54 PM ^
I think its time for a change now. We have a lot of talent. Let's take a chance.
My top 2 are:
1. Urban Meyer
2. PJ Fleck
Nothing else comes to mind atm but maybe there are some other good ones.
January 1st, 2020 at 5:02 PM ^
Urban Meyer lol. Dude won’t even say the word Michigan, but sure. While we’re at it, let’s get Saban to come over as our DC, Belichick as AD, and Lincoln Riley as our OC. Barry Sanders could be our RB coach. Maybe Burrow could skip the NFL and become our QB coach?
January 1st, 2020 at 9:53 PM ^
The same was said about Harbaugh. But he came. Urban Meyer would take the Michigan job, I believe. He is on record saying it is one of the few jobs that interest him.
January 1st, 2020 at 11:53 PM ^
Where is said "record?" I definitely missed that one.
January 2nd, 2020 at 12:28 AM ^
It was more than just words; it was in his contract at Utah that he could be released without penalty to take the Michigan, Ohio State or Notre Dame job. It would be smart to kick his tires if Harbaugh leaves.
This holier than thou bullshit is just that.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/news/story?id=1936781
The last paragraph.
January 2nd, 2020 at 10:31 AM ^
Great post. For years you guys complained about Urban. He cheats. He runs a dirty program. Only a school like OSU would hire a creep like him. Now you want him to come in and save your program? A guy that won't even utter your name in public? That is sooooo delusional. But funny.
January 2nd, 2020 at 1:58 PM ^
About as delusional as Mattison leaving for the Bucknuts prior to it happening. You better pray Bucknut boi that Michigan remains self checked.
January 1st, 2020 at 5:03 PM ^
What? No Belichek? Saban? Sweeney? Ain't no way we are going to even talk to Meyer. Harbaugh's job is safe and even if it wasn't there is nobody out there that we could get that would be better.
January 1st, 2020 at 5:04 PM ^
I’m sure Nebraska fans support this statement
January 1st, 2020 at 5:12 PM ^
The main fault in the Fire Harbaugh camp is stuff like this. When Urban Meyer is your top choice, you don't have any good options. I want Michigan to be better too, but who is going to do better than Harbaugh and an improving offense right now?
January 1st, 2020 at 5:17 PM ^
Urban would do better and has proved it...
January 1st, 2020 at 7:21 PM ^
M could offer him $10 million a year and he’d say no. He hates Michigan.
January 1st, 2020 at 5:21 PM ^
Fleck? Rhule? Venables?
More will emerge after next year
January 1st, 2020 at 5:42 PM ^
Why would we want Rhule? He has never won a B12 championship, choked away the game that could have gotten them there after blowing a 28-3 lead at the start of the 2nd quarter, and has a .500 record at his current school. RichRod had a better resume
January 1st, 2020 at 5:45 PM ^
He walked into a horrible situation and in 2 years managed to go from 1-11 to 11-2. He would absolutely be an upgrade over Slippin' Jimmy Harbaugh.
January 1st, 2020 at 8:02 PM ^
If Michigan were in the Big XII, PAC, or ACC, sure. Not going to cut it in the Big Ten [East] or the SEC [West].
January 1st, 2020 at 10:35 PM ^
Baylor had a lot of luck this year, a la Hoke in 2011, and Baylor is getting blown out by Georgia. Plus, there is a good chance Rhule will be going back to the NFL before the end of the week. There is a lot of smoke about him going to the Giants. So, Rhule is not an upgrade.
January 1st, 2020 at 11:22 PM ^
Rhule has the Browns, Giants, and Panthers knocking to interview him on a short list of guys. They must not know much either.
January 2nd, 2020 at 12:35 AM ^
I find fault with your apparent reasoning of “The Browns are doing it, so it must be a good idea.”
January 1st, 2020 at 6:42 PM ^
A coach going 1-11 his first year and then 11-1 his second is NOT the same as going 6-6 your first two years. At all.
January 1st, 2020 at 9:08 PM ^
10-15 coaches can win 7,8,9,10 games at Michigan. Just because our moribund A.D. screwed up the RR & Hoke hire doesn't mean that we can't get a Harbaugh level replacement. Fact is our insular A.D. is happy with the $$$. M can hide behind the integrity mantra.
January 1st, 2020 at 5:44 PM ^
Urban Meyer? —job 1 for a Michigan coach is to run a clean program. Other than that, play in a New Year’s Day bowl. That is what alums, faculty and administration want. Harbaugh is giving a bonus by emphasizing academics.
It would be nice to beat Ohio State, but we all know it is not a level playing field as long as they cheat and we don’t—and we are not going to cheat.
January 1st, 2020 at 6:08 PM ^
Michigan did not build a 107,000 seat stadium to simply "run a clean program and play in a New Year's day bowl".
January 1st, 2020 at 6:38 PM ^
Stadium’s been full since Harbaugh got here, so I don’t really see your point. Actually, it makes my point.
January 1st, 2020 at 6:54 PM ^
Marty. Blazer.
January 1st, 2020 at 7:43 PM ^
Ford Field and the Lions keep selling out too, what does this prove?
January 1st, 2020 at 8:33 PM ^
Ford Field was sold out to Packers fans last game I saw.
January 2nd, 2020 at 12:43 AM ^
It proves that fans are fanatics.
January 1st, 2020 at 9:03 PM ^
Agreed. Fielding H. Yost is rolling over in his grave.
January 1st, 2020 at 9:27 PM ^
Actually...Michigan did build the stadium for that reason.
January 1st, 2020 at 7:25 PM ^
Prove it.
January 1st, 2020 at 8:42 PM ^
Too many people seem to believe that Michigan not cheating to anywhere near the level other programs do is more of a problem than what other programs actually do is.
January 1st, 2020 at 9:25 PM ^
Academics have nothing to do with playing at Michigan or playing football anywhere in college for that matter unless you are at a military academy or the Ivy League. They actually have standards and the players are defined as student athletes. Athletes have the same standards as non athletes for admission into the schools. Ohio State cheating? Why doesn't someone report their violations? I haven't seen any NCAA violations.
Seems when Michigan can't compete at the national level it's always 3 things the fans use to rationalize losing.
1. Academics
2. We run a clean program
3. The referees were biased.
Anyone ever consider recruiting 5 star athletes might help win some games.
January 1st, 2020 at 10:10 PM ^
Then let's not CHEAT our fans by soaking then with premium ticket prices to watch an average team and program. If they are fine with an average program that stresses academics, which I find laughable by the way, then the ticket prices should reflect it. Michigan's $12 Billion endowment should be sufficient.
January 1st, 2020 at 4:54 PM ^
I can't tell you how excited I am to go through the RichRod/Hoke phases of the coaching cycle again!
January 1st, 2020 at 4:56 PM ^
thats a big assumption... but you be happy with averaging a comfortable 9-4
January 1st, 2020 at 5:14 PM ^
False choice. It's not that people are happy with 9-4, people think our odds of improving are better staying the course rather than nuking everything again and hoping to do better
January 1st, 2020 at 5:25 PM ^
This is the most insightful comment I've read. Those who want to dump a head coach to bet the farm on a new regime are making "Hope" the linchpin of their strategy.
January 1st, 2020 at 7:37 PM ^
Because hope in the possibility of improvement is often more appealing then accepting mediocrity.
It’s the same difference between the colonists who joined the American Revolution to try and fight for something better than the British crown and the colonists who were too afraid to rock the boat and risk their lives for the hope of something better.
Some people are hopers and look to the possibilities of what could be and others simply look only at what they currently see and are incapable of believing that there could be anything better.
January 1st, 2020 at 9:31 PM ^
it's not that we're incapable of believing that there could be anything better, it's just that we're realistic on our chances of getting lanced in the gut.
January 1st, 2020 at 10:57 PM ^
I’m honestly not trying to be a dick, but this is honestly the most defeatist attitude I’ve ever heard. This is the type of “middle management” shit I hear from my VPs who probably make too much money and are afraid to make a fucking decision. Settling for mediocrity is the most non-Michigan option. That is not what our university is about...if you’re end game is being afraid of the future because it could result in a “lanced gut,” then get the fuck outta here. The present is not where we want to be, and I refuse to believe it’s our ceiling.
January 2nd, 2020 at 12:02 PM ^
"I'm honestly not try to be a dick"... but let me be a dick anyway.
Who are you to tell me to get the fuck outta here? I am a person entitled to my own opinions, as are you. It takes a lot of arrogance to definitively declare your opinion to be more valid than someone else's. This isn't a goddamn battle for survival, it's a game that's played for entertainment. If I prefer my entertainment to be reliably enjoyable ~80% of the time instead of gambling it, that's a totally reasonable stance. You don't have to agree, but you get the fuck outta here with your "this is the most important thing in life" attitude.
January 1st, 2020 at 8:21 PM ^
Isn’t “Hope” kinda the point? If you didn’t hope things would get better with coaching changes, Mike Shula would still coach Bama, John Cooper at OSU, Tommy Bowden at Clemson, etc. it’s a very Michigan thing to accept your consequences like a bitter pill rather than change your strategy...
January 1st, 2020 at 5:37 PM ^
Nothing I've seen over 5 years indicates it will get better with Harbaugh:
1. Recruiting is trending down
2. In game X's and O's, to say nothing of clock management, is not good
3. Team always comes out flat and seemingly underprepared
4. No urgency and no recognition of how to push the pedal to the metal when things are going your way - a hurry up offense would be nice to see
5. Heavily mistake prone year after year
6. No improvement from the players, especially QB, form year to year
It's time to move on to someone younger, hungrier and willing to learn from mistakes.
January 1st, 2020 at 8:16 PM ^
Can I delete this for you?
1. Recruiting is the same as it has been. Top 10ish with an occasional great class.
2. Break it down for me. Do a UFR and let's see your work on what, specifically, is not working in the gameplan?
3. The team was up 16-14 at half. How is that coming out flat and unprepared?
4. They ran tempo all year. This isn't Chip Kelly's Oregon and it shouldn't be.
5. Fair enough. They do seem to make dumb mistakes at seemingly inopportune times.
6. No improvement? I mean, that would imply that every player who comes in is as good as when he left which absolutely isn't the case.
January 2nd, 2020 at 8:39 AM ^
So much this.
I am constantly reminded of Nebraska. They were a powerhouse program and fired Solich for going 9-3. Now look where they are. Still trying to find a way back.
People wanting Saban or Meyer are kidding themselves.
January 1st, 2020 at 5:03 PM ^
The strawman argument that every coaching search will end like Rich Rod/Hoke is a great one.
January 1st, 2020 at 5:35 PM ^
unless you're osu, it seems like the most likely outcome. ask texas/usc/miami/florida state.
January 1st, 2020 at 6:36 PM ^
Georgia? LSU? Florida? Penn State?
Also Herman will be on the hot seat if he doesn't beat Oklahoma next year and win the Big XII...and he's beaten Oklahoma once.
