OT: UNC apologizes to Clemson because they posted funny captures to Clemson fans on thier video board Saturday
So some yahoo in UNC's press box put up pictures of Clemson fans on the stadium video boards and captioned them with somewhat derogatory statements. They weren't vulgar, but were, apparently, considered in poor taste. So the UNC AD apologized to Clemson on Sunday because some people were upset about it. You can read about it here, and see some of the captions:
Personally, I think the people that whined like pansies need to man the fuck up. It's fun. Pull the stick out of your ass, lighten up, and have some fucking fun at a football game, fer crissakes!

Well, crap. Autocorrect got me - 'captures' should be 'captions' in the title... I probably spelled it wrong. Maybe I should be captioned?

I thought maybe you were drinking. If not, I recommend that you should start.
October 1st, 2019 at 11:53 AM ^
Chuckle worthy and not offensive at all. I get worse memes about our fans from Sparty fam.
October 1st, 2019 at 11:59 AM ^
Maybe not use a large fella for the fridge joke. For people that don’t get it, it could be seen as making fun of his weight. But I assume that was just a coincidence.
People are way too sensitive these days. Get some steel in your spine!
October 1st, 2019 at 12:11 PM ^
Pretty sure that wasn't a coincidence. But that's what made it funny. Wouldn't have the same effect to have a skinny dude up there.
October 1st, 2019 at 2:49 PM ^
Of the ones I've seen, agree. I thought it was going to be something truly offensive. As it is, they're basically "dad joke" level superlatives about opposing fans.
October 1st, 2019 at 11:55 AM ^
If I’m the UNC AD I tell those fans to get bent.
October 1st, 2019 at 12:13 PM ^
So when did Brady Hoke become the UNC AD??? Good for him though.
October 1st, 2019 at 12:14 PM ^
The AD should double down and start making fun of the emails on the video board
October 1st, 2019 at 11:55 AM ^
If this is derogatory, then I guess you can't make fun of anyone anymore in a "harmless" way. Isn't this basically bad comedy? You could argue bad comedy should apologize for itself but this is dumb.
October 1st, 2019 at 11:56 AM ^
Ridiculous and absurd.
When I lived in Cincinnati, the Reds would do this ALL THE TIME in mid-inning breaks when the Cubs (and their fans that were half of the crowd at Great American BallPark) were in town.
"Been a Cubs fan since 2014", "Also a Golden State and Dallas Cowboys fan", "Thinks Wrigleyville is the Paris of the USA", "White Sox fan in 2005", et cetera.
If anything, it got a laugh from the crowd. Nobody was offended.
October 1st, 2019 at 11:56 AM ^
Awe come on...
Those video captions were hilarious and informative (I didn't know that William "the fridge" Perry went to Clemson)
They were really just different ways of saying that the Clemson fans are "bandwagon" fans.
October 1st, 2019 at 11:56 AM ^
Thank God Clemson didn’t pound a stake in the field in response.

I have had just about enough of outrage culture.
Where does it end?
October 1st, 2019 at 12:11 PM ^
Would you say that the outrage culture has you ... outraged?
October 1st, 2019 at 12:15 PM ^
Sad, actually.
Allow me to apologize on behalf of Gen X. This crap started on our watch. We should have done something to stop it instead of laughing at it.
October 1st, 2019 at 12:56 PM ^
Gen X started it, Millennials ran with it, now Gen Z is either taking it right off a cliff or (and hopefully) are starting to realize this is getting out of hand.
Soon comedy will be completely disallowed unless it elicits a clap for being woke enough.

It's an interesting question, Hatter. My memory of the late 80s/early 90s when this started was that there was a pendulum that needed swinging toward the direction of respect for and acknowledgment of the historical marginalization and outright abuse that women, gays, and minorities had experienced. So in that sense the outrage was in protection of group rights, a/k/a "protected classes" in Civil Rights law.
Now it appears that everyone believes that they as individuals have a right never to feel offended at any time, and for that I don't blame Gen X.
October 1st, 2019 at 12:58 PM ^
I'm genuinely curious how someone being outraged at something impacts you. If UNC hadn't done this, would you somehow be worse off? Is it meritorious to offend people? I'm ambivalent regarding UNC's actions, FWIW, just interested in other peoples' perspectives I suppose.
October 1st, 2019 at 1:49 PM ^
It started impacting all of us when it started being used as a weapon to attack anyone who isn't 100% in alignment with the correct opinions. We aren't that far away from "Hello" being a gamble.
October 1st, 2019 at 4:07 PM ^
It impacts all of us when comedy dies. And even if that doesn't seem like a big deal, I would argue that comedy is vital to free speech, and vice-versa.
October 1st, 2019 at 11:59 AM ^
I didn't find any of the captions to be particularly vicious, yet it still feels beneath the dignity of an "institution of higher learning." Leave it to the individual fans, they're better at it already.
October 1st, 2019 at 12:01 PM ^
Why do this? I mean, seriously. What's the point of using a scoreboard to mock opposing fans?
If this was at Michigan Stadium, we'd all probably be pissed. And if it were Michigan fans getting this crap in East Lansing, there'd be three threads by halftime.
October 1st, 2019 at 12:15 PM ^
Oh lord. Here is one of those snowflakes I referenced below. I'm really not surprised you're against this.
October 1st, 2019 at 12:18 PM ^
Stopped reading at "snowflake."
Have a nice day.
October 1st, 2019 at 3:03 PM ^
Bando is a classic example of why outrage culture is ridiculous and why we have adults who need safe spaces. If you can’t handle the term snowflake you have some real issues to deal with.
October 1st, 2019 at 3:35 PM ^
I'm thinking Bando can handle the term; he just thinks it's stupid.
October 1st, 2019 at 3:46 PM ^
DICHOTOMY...
Fan base of one of the most liberal educational institutions on the planet says "If you can't handle the term snowflake, you have some real issues." ROFLMAO
You do realize you're encapsulating 99% of the UofM population at any given time in history when you say "snowflakes", then you say they "have some real issues".
I mean, not that I disagree with you, because I'm sure as hell glad I didn't go to school there, but sh*t... u funny bru!

Those captions were pretty tame and not offensive. But I agree, it seems a bit cheesy to do this, but I'm one of those reactionary fans that thinks we need less piped in music during games.
October 1st, 2019 at 12:02 PM ^
These are strange times. Civic discourse is both coarse and sensitive in the extreme. You're right Bando, and those three threads before halftime would contain some dreadful language.
October 1st, 2019 at 12:09 PM ^
Agreed, there are 2 things I don't like, broccoli and crybabies. People can kick rocks with this outrage/cancel culture
October 1st, 2019 at 1:31 PM ^
How dare you insult broccoli, you green food racist!
October 1st, 2019 at 12:09 PM ^
I would've thought Carolina's weak play call on their 2 point try would have more than made up for any poor taste schtick by the scoreboard operator.
October 1st, 2019 at 12:09 PM ^
FYI — Not worth a new thread imo, but Iowa released their 2 deep today (was tweeted by Josh Henschke from 247) and Oliver Martin was NOT on it.
I had really high hopes for the kid when he came to M, but he is apparently not injured and not currently among the top 4 WRs for Iowa. Maybe losing him wasn’t as big a deal (More for 2020 than 2019.) as I/we had feared.
October 1st, 2019 at 12:13 PM ^
Good god this country has gotten so soft. Apparently even fun needs to be sacrificed out of the fear of hurting the feelings of a bunch of snowflakes.
October 1st, 2019 at 12:14 PM ^
That's ridiculous. You should see the stuff they do on the Ohio Stadium video boards about Michigan fans.
Frustrating fact, when the Michigan Alumni buys a big block of tickets for UM v. OSU hockey games, which entitles us to a zamboni ride for a kid, they will not let our kids wear UM gear or force them to wear a coat over it.
October 1st, 2019 at 12:26 PM ^
That is crazy. But maybe well-intentioned? In that they've seen kids booed for their Michigan gear?
October 1st, 2019 at 12:53 PM ^
My brother's shitty ex-wife is now married to a shitty OSU fan (not alum). They took my niece and nephew (big Michigan fans because they're smart and love their uncle) to the OSU big ten football championship game and he refused to let them enter the stadium without wearing OSU gear. That's fucking child abuse IMO.
October 1st, 2019 at 1:25 PM ^
I wish your niece and nephew would have flat out refused to enter the stadium, then... Sometimes, kids just don't realize the power they have!
October 1st, 2019 at 12:32 PM ^
Well that's just good, clean fun. No need to apologize for that!
October 1st, 2019 at 12:46 PM ^
The people responsible for the offending captions have been sacked.
October 1st, 2019 at 1:29 PM ^
I upvote all Python references. Unless they are insensitive, in which case I take to Twitter to express my outrage until the offender apologizes.

I was hoping to see "participation trophy" somewhere, but alas, not yet.
