Bruce Feldman's 2019 "freaks" list
Bruce Feldman has long written a college football "freaks" list that talks about the biggest athletic wonders in the sport. This year's list has Julius Welschof at #31, along with a little more in-state love with WMU running back LeVante Bellamy at #23.
The former champion moguls skier from Germany who first impressed European football scout Brandon Collier with videos of a then-6-6, 220-pound Welschof doing backflips on his skis, is now 6-6, 275. Word is he broad jumped 10-7, and, according to Collier, can still tight-rope backward across a river, do backflips and walk on his hands for 50 yards.
Here's the LINK ($).
I really really hope those talents somehow translate to superior results on fall saturdays
From all the reports, it seems like Welschof has really developed himself physically in the past year. No word yet on how he is performing technically (which would be the biggest jump for him to make). I have a feeling we start seeing flashes of Welschof's game this year, with him fully in the 2-deep rotation at SDE next year.
"....do backflips and walk on his hands for 50 yards...."
Ideally playing football, but it sounds like a solid fallback would be the cheerleading squad.
Wait. If he can't get on the field for a non-National Championship winning team, how would he get on the field for an actual National Championship winning team?
Wait, uh.. didn't he redshirt last year?
Yes. Yes, he did... But the OP mentioned a fallback plan would be cheerleading. If you activate your fallback plan, then you haven't gotten onto the field.
Soooo... I always tell people that if you have to explain the joke, the joke wasn't good. Ergo, I have failed and will hang my head in shame.
My bad, I had no idea the cheer team won a National Championship.
Shame! Shame! Hang your head in shame!
If football doesn't work out, he'll always be able to make videos with that Kicklicious guy.
double Post. Nm
Sure hope Welschof can play some DT this year.
Prob needs at least 20 more pounds though, right? RS junior year (next year) seems like a reasonable year for a guy that came in as raw as him to start contributing.
He's a RS FR this year so next year would be a RS SO
But, how's his pad level?
He doesn't need pads. He does push-ups with his neck. His mom's a Braski.
Can he walk backwards on a tightrope on his hands?
Which way would be backwards? The direction your back is facing, or the direction your stomach is facing?
Man, these German DUI tests are tough!
If this guy turns out to be a stud I feel like we should send a giant thank you card to Germany for all they've given us over the past few years
blue jeans and peanut butter. When I went to Germany with my hs german class back in the early 90s we were told to bring blue jeans and peanut butter to give as presents to our host families. Apparently those were two items that hadn't quite hit the mainstream in Germany at the time. To balance things out a few of us brought back Nutella and Cuban cigars. Seemed like a pretty fair trade.
You were allowed back through customs with Cuban cigars?
satellite camps
Are satellite camps illegal worldwide or just in the U.S.?
If it doesn’t clearly specify worldwide, then once michigan does it they will clarify the anti-Harbaugh recruiting rule once more.
Michigan should look into this Alex Honig kid as a potential developmental QB in the 2021 class. Worst case, he could go the Zach Gentry route and convert to a TE
sounds like dude potential
Faakele 6’9” 400lbs and can move.
Dillon 6’ 250lbs 4.4 forty.
Why? Shakes fist at cloud.
I was talking to a gopher the other day and mentioned Falele and he said the guy was awesome. How good is he really and why did Harbaugh cool on him after discovering him.
I just think he was so new to the game that the question was if he could get there. It’s starting to look like a “huge” miss.
As a 22 year old sophomore, the potential should (needs to) show soon.
"...champion moguls skier..."
Ummm, no. I watched his moguls video and the dude was straight up slower than me! Granted, he actually completed the course - something I'm not likely to do. But I'm pretty sure he wasn't going to win a moguls contest against competitors in a 5-year old age group...
OK? Except that you actually left off the "former" part which very much implies that he was a champion, not that he is currently competitive or would be again. Hell, considering he spent 12 years on his team, it damn well could have come when he was near 5.
Or are you suggesting that the "former champion moguls skier" is just completely made up?
Made up... I guess it's possible he won something in his single digit years. But there was a video of him skiing moguls in a competition, for which he placed really low, during his recruitment/commitment timeframe. I believe you're reaching for absolutes, which don't exist I the context of these posts. My statement is true based on what I saw in that video.
The intent of the articles author, in stating "former championship moguls skier", was that he won a championship - which generally connotes something big. Not that he won a local groups weekend league for five year olds...
Totally agree. If he won a championship of some sort, I can't imagine what the other skiers looked like. Even if it was a kids competition.. I have seen kids that are around 5 years old ski wayyyy better than the video of him skiing moguls at 17.
Dude, if you don't have something nice to say...
Julian is 6'6" 275 can do back flips and walk on his hands for 50 yards. So his moguls trophy was when he was six. So what? He could knock you on your ass while walking backwards on his hands and doing backflips. He's a dude that is Fred Jackson'd without needing to exaggerate.
Sweet. I want him to come on huge and be a complete nut on the field. Like Favreau as Bateman in The Replacements.
Finally, a list we can all agree on the top spot: Ben Mason.
Tired: Will Campbell did the splits on a lunch table!

He is going to have one hell of sack celebration.
