Way OT - favorite sad songs??
Been here for 10+ years and this is my first OP so please be gentle. I’m looking for recommendations for sad songs. Genre doesn’t really matter - I like a little bit of everything.
Been going through a rough patch and always helps me to hear someone else in the same place. Whatcha got? And thanks in advance.
“One More Minute” by Weird Al Yankovic.
always a go-to for soul searching and deep reflection, haha
Logged in to upvote. Love me some WAY. The follow-up ‘Since you’ve been gone’ worth a lesson as well
Rise Above This - Seether
Sad song but gives hope.
Nick Drake & Elliott Smith always get me through the day. It doesn't matter the song. They could make Baby Shark sound dreary.
elliot smith is always in the rotation- will have to check out nick drake. thank you!
Holiday in Spain - Counting Crows
Slow it Down - The Lumineers
Both are melancholy and quite sad but hopeful at the same time.
Edit - Also, Nightswimming by REM. A much better song, IMO, than the more popular Everybody Hurts.
nightswimming is one of my all-time favorites - will definitely check the others out. thank you!
No problem. I strong recommend Holiday in Spain. The most popular rendition of it is in a live show in New Amsterdam in 2003. It really took me back when I heard it, quite a song.
"Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam.
Talk about sad
Yeah, that song is just flat out tragic. There are sad songs that can give you hope. That one just makes you want to cry.
Great song, though.
Winner. Hoped they would play it @ Wrigley last year. They didn't. Still a fantastic show though.
ya they did. you just needed to go to both shows.
I went to the August 20th show. Set list for both shows says it wasn't played either day.
That is a J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers song though.
Technically by J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers, but agreed.
In high school one of my best friends growing up died in a car crash along with two other guys in our class on a Friday night. Absolutely rocked our school for a while. Anyway, this FUCKING SONG (Pearl Jam version) was being played by the radio station I listened to on the way into school that Monday morning after the accident. Unbelievably tone deaf.
I was not unhappy to see that station go belly up.
The J. Frank Wilson version is my favorite but I believe that one isn't the original either if I remember right.
You are correct. The original as penned didn’t go anywhere. J Frank Wilson rearranged it and that’s the version covered by PJ.
Despacito.
This Burrito
"Cat's in the Cradle" - Harry Chapin
my dad used to play that song for me - definitely a classic. thank you
You are most welcome. One Sunday morning a few years ago I was sitting in the Jiffy Lube waiting room while getting the oil changed in the car. It was Fathers' day and Cat's in the Cradle was playing on the radio. I went home and hugged my kids and wished my dad was still around.
so sorry for your loss, and thank you for the recommendations - will definitely check those out
Absolutely Cats in the Cradle. Similar genre - "Father and Son" by Yusuf Islam (fka Cat Stevens). I tear up every time.
What came to mind for me as well.
Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. I'll second Rise Above This by Seether.
his version of hurt is great - and already in my ‘sad songs’ playlist. i read an article about trent reznor first hearing that version. he realized right away that the song was no longer his - super powerful stuff. thank you
Still strange to me that Cash covered Nails, and not the other way around. Hurt feels like a Cash original, yet it's not. Cuts like a knife.
Adam's Song by Blink 182
The Homefront by Billy Bragg.
Kind of obvious, but "Everybody Hurts" by REM is a simple and great song.
Also like "Nothingman" by Pearl Jam
Two Headed boy - neutral milk hotel
Never coming home (song for the guilty) - Ramshackle Glory
Stufy grow 1000 pairs https://youtu.be/7cyMxoqydew
"Holland 1945" just as sad, but also angry. That whole album is a study in how profound and complex sadness can be.
avatar checks out
One for My Baby - Frank Sinatra
Also
The Shins- A Comet Appears
The Mountain Goats- Cotton
Could put quite a few Mountain Goats songs here.
I'd personally go with Elijah
Agree about the mountain goats. Their stuff has gotten me through some tough times. I always went back to Old College Try, Waving at You, and Pale Green Things.
I also used to listen to the Divine Fits - Shivers quite a bit. Hope this helps, OP.
Anyone go to the show last night? I thought opening with No Children was pretty awesome.
Baby Shark
Moments of Pleasure - by Kate Bush
Last Time I Saw Richard - Joni Mitchell
Jugband Blues - (Syd Barrett era) Pink Floyd because a) you can kind of tell that he's going crazy and b) he's kind of giving a futile cry for help
Wildflower - Sheryl Crow
Wounded Horse - XTC
Good choice of a Joni Mitchell tune, and I would also suggest "River."
Last kiss by J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers
My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion
Mockingbird by Eminem
Stan by Eminem
In the Ghetto by Elvis
The last lines of Mockingbird might be the best song ending of all time. In a weird, twisted way, it ends on a hopeful note even though it involves breaking a bird's neck.
Sad songs say so much
The Smiths - There is a light that never goes out
yes that’s a classic - pretty much any smiths/morissey would also work, right? thanks man
I don't know that I ever considered this to to be a "sad" song, but certainly very characteristic of Morrissey's lyrics.
I always felt like "Please let me get what I want" was the saddest Smiths song, with "What time is now?" the most melancholic.
