Perles is out at MSU effective immediately
I have to admit some culpability in this MSU fiasco.
Before this year, I always voted for clowns like Joel Ferguson and Perles because I thought it amusing to know MSU was managed by idiots.

Perles, as it appears, is more than just an idiot but rather a complete and total POS
November 29th, 2018 at 12:09 PM ^
If recent history has taught us anything, always vote for the best candidate regardless of school/party affiliation...giving power to idiots is never a good idea.
November 29th, 2018 at 12:53 PM ^
Lolzzz
November 29th, 2018 at 1:39 PM ^
It's a great idea in theory, but in this day and age where everything is so polarized, it hardly ever works in practice. If you're a member of party X, you are inundated with information on why party Y is so awful, unAmerican, and detrimental to this country. And vice versa.
We live in an us vs. them kind of world right now.
November 29th, 2018 at 3:38 PM ^
Exactly this. Doesn’t matter what party you mean towards.
November 29th, 2018 at 4:48 PM ^
The problem is that "Best Candidate" is highly subjective and also varies wildly depending on the office in which that candidate will be serving. The truth is that a candidate's party affiliation is going to come into play heavily more often than not.
November 29th, 2018 at 12:15 PM ^
Citing health concerns. Normally I would say that's a cover story. In this case, MSU is so inept I think it's likely the truth. I think they would have liked to keep him if they could.
November 29th, 2018 at 12:55 PM ^
I'd imagine getting caught covering up a serial rapist for over 20 years can't be good for one's health.
November 29th, 2018 at 1:05 PM ^
Perles didn't cover up Nassar. He was brought in after Nassar's trial to keep everything under wraps.
November 29th, 2018 at 1:08 PM ^
In 1991, MSU Athletic Director George Perles appears to have quashed a report from a MSU field hockey player and her coach regarding Larry Nassar. Perles is very much involved in this. He has also been on the MSU Board of Trustees since 2007.
November 29th, 2018 at 1:59 PM ^
Is this investigation still ongoing? I feel like this story died as soon as it came out.
November 29th, 2018 at 5:12 PM ^
It died everywhere except here. It was actually the most impossibly ridiculous claim ever made against anyone in the history of mankind.
November 29th, 2018 at 5:57 PM ^
You are right. I'm an idiot. I was getting Perles confused with Engler. Two old fat guys covering up for MSU.
November 29th, 2018 at 1:13 PM ^
MGoneBlue is referring to the alleged cover-up by then-AD Perles of a reported rape/sexual assault of a student-athlete in 1992.
Student was scholarship field hockey player, went for treatment, seen by Nassar, he assaulted her. She reported it, went to Title IX office, eventually buried and nothing happened.
That's the story, anyway. There are apparently enough inconsistencies to cast at least some doubt.

November 29th, 2018 at 1:40 PM ^
Not defending Perles or that cespool in EL, but I don't understand the story. Nassar was still a student when the alleged assault happened, and not an MSU employee. Why then would this end up on Perles desk? Did Big George have some sort of control over assaults against athletes by other students ? Unless, I am missing something, this seems like a police matter, and not the AD. I knew a hockey player who got cold-cocked by another student at a party off campus in '05. The cops were called, but no one reported it to William Martin.
November 29th, 2018 at 2:06 PM ^
Perles allegedly "intervened" in the matter. He was the AD at the time of the assault. Effectively made it "go away"
November 29th, 2018 at 2:19 PM ^
There was a recent account by a woman who was a student back then. She reported a sexual assault to MSU. They started taking her report until she said the perpetrator was an athlete. She was told all such cases were handled by the athletic department, as ridiculous as it sounds. It's all consistent. MSU made covering up crimes involving athletes a priority. Victims of sexual assault were treated very poorly even if they were athletes.
November 29th, 2018 at 3:04 PM ^
Read that article - consistent is not the right word here. Maybe it's real and the writing of the case was terrible but I think it's pretty clear and verifiable that the case is way off. It makes statements that are easy to refute: like she was sent to Dr. Nassar because he was renowned as a doctor and Olympic team doctor. He was neither yet. Why would she go to a medical student for treatment? Maybe the years are mixed up, but that would mean that it's actually later and then Perles wouldn't be coach or AD. I also think it's hard to mess up the year you were a freshman in college. Sure, a random party might have been years ago or maybe twelve but your freshman year? You should be able to remember that when you're 90. I'm not saying there isn't some truth here, just that it seems sketchy and we should certainly wait for more evidence here. This isn't just he said she said, there are verifiable statements that are just wrong.

Getting former MSU football coach Perles mixed up with former governor Engler?
November 29th, 2018 at 5:58 PM ^
Yessir. Mea culpa. Of course the board fixed points just in time for my negbang.
November 29th, 2018 at 12:16 PM ^
The dominoes finally start falling. May they all reunite in prison.
November 29th, 2018 at 12:34 PM ^
I'm hoping they get the band back together in hell.
In the meantime, Perles can go find Paterno and keep the seats warm for everyone else.
November 29th, 2018 at 12:22 PM ^
Every time Perles said anything in the media regarding Nassar, his son was speaking for him. I can't believe over this whole time, he's been healthy enough to have this job.
November 29th, 2018 at 12:25 PM ^
Oh my god, anyone thinking this is part of the Nassar debacle is completely out of their minds. This wasnt fallout from that. No way MSU would do that, it would involve admitting to being shitty people.
November 29th, 2018 at 12:30 PM ^
Who appoints his replacement?
November 29th, 2018 at 12:33 PM ^
Tom Izzo

November 29th, 2018 at 12:47 PM ^
Rick Snyder (governor)
November 29th, 2018 at 12:48 PM ^
The governor appoints his replacement...Rick Snyder until the end of the year.
November 29th, 2018 at 1:09 PM ^
Chris Christie
November 29th, 2018 at 12:37 PM ^
You could wipe away Nassar and all their revenue-sport issues and they'd still be a backwater place by virtue of having a goon like that in a high position.
In a logically ordered universe Perles would be a Walmart security guard.
November 29th, 2018 at 2:17 PM ^
lol Perles doesn't have enough integrity to be a Wal Mart security guard!
November 29th, 2018 at 12:58 PM ^
They're replacing him with Snyder?!? JFC the ineptitude doesn't stop. U-M alum or not.
November 29th, 2018 at 1:06 PM ^
No, Snyder appoints the replacement. He's not going to be the replacement.
Avoiding politics, but it's interesting that Democrat George Perles is not holding on for 5 weeks so Democrat Gretchen Whitmer can appoint his replacement.
November 29th, 2018 at 1:24 PM ^
No, the amazing part is that MSU Trustee George Perles isn't holding on so that MSU grad and former inept Ingham County prosecutor* Gretchen Whitmer can appoint his replacement instead of Michigan grad Rick Snyder.
*I take no sides in Michigan politics, but you have to admit that a metric ton of shit was overlooked on Whitmer's watch. [EDIT: did NOT in fact take place on her watch, HT below. Wish I knew how to format strike through text on mobile.]
November 29th, 2018 at 1:55 PM ^
Whitmer served as Ingham County prosecutor for six months, from July 2016 to Dec 2016. She was appointed to the office after Stuart Dennings was charged with multiple criminal charges for pandering and engaging prostitution. The "metric ton of shit" that was overlooked by that office was overlooked when Dennings was in office, not Whitmer.

+1 Thanks for the correction. I've noted it above.
November 29th, 2018 at 1:04 PM ^
To be honest, was he ever really in? He's reached the point where he has the brain power equivalent to Mermaid Man.
November 29th, 2018 at 1:12 PM ^
They all (minus the two that were just elected in November) should be gone. The interim president with them.
November 29th, 2018 at 1:32 PM ^
I wrote in Devin Bush and Chase Winovich for the MSU Board this election cycle
November 29th, 2018 at 2:25 PM ^
I did too. Their institution is a joke and nothing is going to change, so I did the same thing and wrote in Devin and Chase.
November 29th, 2018 at 2:26 PM ^
My buddy chose to write in John Beilein and Jim Harbaugh.
November 29th, 2018 at 8:42 PM ^
LOL so did I
November 29th, 2018 at 2:26 PM ^
Timing is very weird. Now Rick Snyder gets to put in someone before Whitmer takes over. This would be like if Justice Ginsburg stepped down in December 2016.
November 30th, 2018 at 7:31 AM ^
Eh, takes longer to appoint a member of SCOTUS than a BoT member, I would assume. In your scenario, President would have roughly a month to get it approved and I don’t even know if Congess is in session long enough during that time. She’d have to have retired pretty much right after Election Day in give sufficient time
November 29th, 2018 at 3:53 PM ^
Honestly, I didn’t even know he was still alive, lol.
November 29th, 2018 at 4:12 PM ^
Yeah. I did too. I didn't know they were bad actors. I just thought they were schmucks.
November 29th, 2018 at 4:17 PM ^
Although 99% of the posts at RCMB are nothing but juvenile drivel, there is the occasional post that is insightful, including this statement:
"so his BoT career ends just like his coaching career. a catastrophic failure and 2 years too late."
November 29th, 2018 at 4:38 PM ^
to quote a line in the article: "Earlier this year, Perles was dragged into the Larry Nassar scandal when a former MSU athlete accused him of covering up for Nassar 26 years ago."
emphasis mine.
