End of Half Non-Call for Kicked Football Explained to Harbaugh
Saw this posted on Maize N Brew regarding the end of half football kicking non-call.
https://www.maizenbrew.com/football/2018/11/17/18100680/watch-jim-harbaugh-shares-why-refs-didnt-flag-iu-for-kicking-football-out-of-refs-hand
Harbaugh stated this is what he was told...
“I asked them ‘did they kick the ball?’, and the response from the umpire was ‘he didn’t mean to’. So I further asked, you know, ‘that doesn’t seem like a judgment call’, the ball was either kicked by one of their players or not in my opinion,” Harbaugh said.
For the integrity of the game, these refs need to start getting some serious discipline for this kind of B.S.

Dude, front page.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:33 PM ^
I found this useful since the Maize and Brew article does provide a clip of the actual incident from several angles, but yeah, it was discussed in the post game presser.

Sorry this offended you. Was the title not clear enough to avoid wasting your time reading it?
EDIT: I didn't MEAN to offend you, so you can't hold it against me. Your real name isn't John O'Neil is it?
November 18th, 2018 at 1:24 PM ^
I'm sure offensive players don't mean to false start either but its still called.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:32 PM ^
Or how about non-intentional targeting?
It's kind of incredible that the umpire would even utter those words and simply not say anything.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:25 PM ^
It was obvious as hell. Any halfway competent referee would have either thrown a flag or stopped the clock until the ball could be placed ready for play. That crew is so crooked.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:36 PM ^
Well, yeah. Look at who we're talking about here- the John O'Neil crew - the dregs of the Big Ten. This is a perfect example of low standards and lack of accountability from the Big Ten office. He keeps making the bad calls and he keeps his job.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:25 PM ^
intent shouldn't matter.
i didn't intend to kick the ball twenty yards the other direction while you were trying to set the ball. ooops. doesn't cut it.
EDIT: also, the coaches poll is out and we're still #4. OSU dropped 2 spots to #10, WVU dropped 5 spots to #12, and syracuse only dropped 7 to #19 after getting demolished by NfD.

I think the real question is why is Pitt ranked at all. Yes, they only have one "ACC" loss, but that's because they didn't play Clemson. They were also spectacularly blown out by PSU and to a lesser extent by UCF. Wisconsin would simply trounce Pitt and is far more deserving of a ranking than Pitt (they also played their only common opponent (PSU) much more closely.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:28 PM ^
I'm more concerned about the poor time management of the coaching staff on this one. Should have never been a situation where that ball is in position to be kicked by the Indiana player there.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:56 PM ^
Could M have handled things a little better? Sure. But the idea that coaches should have managed the clock situation with the idea that the refs may fuck things up only proves the point that the refs need to be better.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:02 PM ^
Why do people always say this: "Well the team shouldn't have been in the position for the refs to affect it". WHY NOT BOTH?!!!! Why do people defend poor officiating?
November 18th, 2018 at 2:20 PM ^
That's exactly right what does one have to do with the other.
November 18th, 2018 at 5:07 PM ^
Because they are trolls trying to just fuck with you and get a rise from you because they are that type of dumb fuck person. It also could be they are just that stupid like most sports fans who don't know anything. They just throw comments out there to have a voice. They hear or see one person make a comment and then echo it the first chance they get. They don't understand logic, right or wrong and common sense issues. Every where you look...idiots running about.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:09 PM ^
Personally I think the complaints are WAY overblown. They marched down field in the blink of an eye, and I think part of the run calls was to burn the clock so that IU had no chance of getting the ball back. The plan to get the first down and have a play ready right away was a smart coaching move. The actual play call, not having routes go to the end zone...fine, criticize that. But they were in position to at least get 3 there regardless of that tackle, and the refs fucked it up.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:17 PM ^
So what if there was even more time on the clock but the defensive player booted the ball 30 yards? Then what? It's not poor clock management when a cheap penalty was committed and not called.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:29 PM ^
Sorry ref, I didn't mean to delay the game.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:57 PM ^
Now said by every QB throughout the B1G.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:36 PM ^
I hate to say this. Harbaugh being measured with public condemnation about these officiating blunders may be leading to fewer penalties. He stated in an earlier post game interview that Warde asked him to let him handle the officiating issues. Seems like the calls have been relatively balanced since early in season. But yes, kicking the ball and no penalty especially at a critical time.....woof
November 18th, 2018 at 1:46 PM ^
I hope Warde leaves a flaming bag of shit on John O’Neill’s front porch, and covers his car in Liquid Ass.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:25 PM ^
....and on this assclown's front porch as he at the end of the day is responsible for all this crap.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:13 PM ^
If warded is handling it, why do we still get the o’niel crew?
November 18th, 2018 at 2:33 PM ^
Why indeed, what's up with this?
November 18th, 2018 at 1:42 PM ^
It's hard for me to understand how many of these big ten so-called officials are even allowed in the stadium let alone work the games.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:43 PM ^
I'm a dumb explanation, but the situation wasn't helped by poor clock management at the end of the half. I don't know why teams don't spike the ball more often; you aren't going to run out of downs with 40 seconds left, and have a TO in your pocket for situations like that is way more useful.
But whatever, it was still an 11-point win on a weekend where a bunch of other teams played worse.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:43 PM ^
I'm sure Indiana's defensive back didn't mean to coldcock Berkley Edwards with the crown of his helmet, either.
Sarcasm aside, here's wishing the best to young Mr. Edwards, and hoping that wasn't the last time he's in a Michigan uniform.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:28 PM ^
I still don't understand why it took those incompetent fucking refs so damn long to affirm the targeting call on the Edwards' hit??? He seemed like he was watching something on Netflix.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:37 PM ^
Probably took their time because Berkley was unfortunately still laid out on the field. The game couldn't resume yet so why rush it.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:43 PM ^
Only one person knows whether it was done intentionally.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:47 PM ^
I disagree. That player took an extra hop-step on his right foot with his left foot extended way out toward the ball. All that while staring directly at the ball. Look at the overhead view. There is no question that it was intentional. Just as intentional as the Indiana head-hunter trying to knock someone's head off. The ref should be suspended for even trying to explain his fuck up like that. What a joke.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:20 PM ^
Obviously intentional. I'm sure indianas coach was happy with him. The problem is the refs are incompetent.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:31 PM ^
The way Indiana's head coach was jumping up and down with joy as his team was running into the tunnel at halftime was eerily similar to when I got my niece tickets to some boy band show last Christmas. Except she was 12 years old at the time, and he is a grown man.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:46 PM ^
The end of the article states "Expect the Big Ten to clarify early next week whether the crew botched this call or not."
Ummmm, there's no need to clarify anything. It is irrefutable he kicked the ball. Intent has nothing to do with it. As several have already stated, many penalties are flagged even when it wasn't the intent of the player. This was clearly a delay of game penalty on the defense which any competent crew would flag, allowing us one more offensive snap. Anything the conference says other than "yup, they botched the call" would just be a feeble attempt to cover for a bad officiating crew.
That being said, spike the damned ball ASAP after Mason runs for the first down. The minimum Michigan should have walked away from that drive with is another Moody FG.
November 18th, 2018 at 10:11 PM ^
I believe Shea was motioning that he was going to spike the ball. I think the expectation was to catch Indiana off guard and McKeon would be able to walk into the endzone. The IU defender didn't bite.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:50 PM ^
It looked pretty damn intentional. Probably nothing will come of it, but don't insult people's intelligence with that crap.
And regardless of intent, the officials goofed and our clock management could have been better.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:54 PM ^
What do they mean he didn't mean to?! HE'S STICKING HIS F@@@ING LEG OUT!
November 18th, 2018 at 1:54 PM ^
I was sitting on the goal line 26 rows up. It was right in front of us. The dick player from dirty fucking Indiana kicked the ball. Deliberately. It was bullshit.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:59 PM ^
Should be ever be a judgment call as to intent. Either automatic penalty or at a minimum stop and reset the clock.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:19 PM ^
I LOVE this idea. Penalty if intent, but, REGARDLESS, clock stops.
That will give dirty players incentive to not "accidentally" stick their feet out.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:59 PM ^
November 18th, 2018 at 2:20 PM ^
Agreed. This is one of the reasons I'm in the BPONE.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:01 PM ^
This just continues the pattern of terrible in game explanations of calls by refs since Harbaugh has been here. Can the incompetence get any worse from some of these refs?
November 18th, 2018 at 2:21 PM ^
I'm at the point where the B1G SHOULD fire ALL of the refs and bring in new ones. Can't be worse than what we have.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:17 PM ^
So, the SEC bag men have corrupted our officiating crews?
November 18th, 2018 at 2:20 PM ^
Don't expect anything out of a conference run by Comedian/Masturbator Jim Delaney.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:26 PM ^
I've been wondering, what does the rulebook say? All I can find is one of the points for Illegal Day is "Action clearly designed to delay the officials from making the ball ready for play (A.R. 3-4-2-II)."
That's pretty fuzzy, but I'd say 'designed' is equivalent to intent.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:28 PM ^
Here's a link to John O'neill's LinkedIn page.
and an email address for those who are so inclined.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:29 PM ^
What really concerns me is that big ten officials will be calling the next game.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:30 PM ^
Indiana needs to take a long look in the mirror. What is it with Indiana teams and the hatred for us? Purdue’s crap show now this whole game. Talked to a buddy who was at the game he said it was worse than what was shown on tv. I’ll be shocked if the BIG steps in. The BIG staff are just as mediocre as the officials.
November 18th, 2018 at 2:34 PM ^
It's not rocket science. Whether it was intentional or not, if the ref was having a hard time getting the ball to spot it --- BLOW THE DAMN WHISTLE and stop the clock....SO YOU CAN GET THE BALL....TO SPOT IT!!!
