Only complaint is Hudson and his targeting... What was he thinking ??
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:37 PM ^
I just don't see how only Michigan players are being ejected for plays that literally happen in every game. Like, you can rationalize why a particular hit is called that way, but you can find examples of Hudson's hit every Saturday and nothing happens. It's insane.
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:05 PM ^
They had a blatant launching head down crown of the helmet hit on one of Mason’s goal line runs.....aaaand nothing from the refs. No buzz from the booth
September 23rd, 2018 at 1:15 AM ^
Do you think this is something that can be attributed in any way to coaching or Hudon's style of tackling? Or is he just an unfortunate victim of targeting roulette?
September 23rd, 2018 at 10:24 AM ^
Yes it seems that Michigan is called for every instance where targetting could be called while other teams get the benefit of the doubt against us. There were multiple plays where it could have been called against Nebraska, some much more egregious that what was called on Hudson, yet no flags.
My biggest problem with this penalty is its subjective nature and the unevenness of the calls. I dont like penaltys that could be called on literally every play.
Holding is another in this book. On Martinezs 3rd down scramble in the first quarter the blocker had Winovich around the shoulders and head with both arms from behind. No call. On McCaffreys called back TD run Martin had text book blocking downfield and it gets called.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:39 PM ^
Hudson needs to start wrapping people up. Refs instinctively throw the flag for targeting, even when it's not warranted, when you throw yourself shoulder-first at the ball carrier.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:35 PM ^
Targeting is stupid. I don’t know why Khaleke got ejected. Looked like minimal helmet to helmet contact at best
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:41 PM ^
And yet Perry got one right in the chops, facemask to facemask, in the 2nd quarter and the ref stood there with his finger up his ass.
The enforcement of the rule is horrifically inconsistent.
September 22nd, 2018 at 5:14 PM ^
It was O'Neill's crew. Do you really expect anything approaching competence?
September 22nd, 2018 at 5:57 PM ^
Because facemask isn’t targeting. It’s using the crown of your helmet. What Hudson got called for today is what used to be spearing. He dropped his head and the top of his helmet was the first thing to make contact. It’s a dangerous way to tackle for both him and the guy he is hitting and was 100 percent targeting
September 22nd, 2018 at 6:25 PM ^
Right. He needs to keep his head up. Fundamentals, man.
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:33 PM ^
With two in a row, he’s going to be targeted by the refs going forward.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:36 PM ^
Metellus had one hell of a game.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:39 PM ^
Who's Metellus? I think you mean Martellus. I heard his name called all day.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:36 PM ^
It's almost like SMU's second-half scoring last week was a combination of some lucky throws and a metric ton of ref bullshit.
Glad to see them shut down a Nebraska team that probably wasn't all that good even with a healthy Martinez, but certainly not with a limited one and no other major playmakers.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:38 PM ^
Gary had his best game in his career.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:47 PM ^
That's.... actually kind've sad.
September 22nd, 2018 at 5:37 PM ^
Kind've?? Can't blame auto correct for that one.
September 22nd, 2018 at 6:08 PM ^
Gary had 2 sacks (3 TFL) and 10 tackles last year against OSU
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:54 PM ^
I don’t know about that. He made like 3 highly visible impact plays. But he’s played consistently great against better teams.
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:05 PM ^
Gary also sat out the second half entirely
September 22nd, 2018 at 5:48 PM ^
Triple teamed and held, even on the bench.
September 22nd, 2018 at 6:04 PM ^
I didn't see him much after the first. Not saying he got hurt, but he certainly left before anyone else.
September 23rd, 2018 at 8:18 AM ^
I was sitting behind the bench. He came off after a second down play holding his right arm gingerly. Way he and training staff reacted, seemed like a stinger. Stayed out after that.
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:01 PM ^
No, that'd probably be last year vs Ohio State.
He looked awesome today though in very limited action. Few TFL's, sack, and a QB hurry. Good to see Paye not seriously hurt, that kid has impressed the hell out of me - same with Aidan Hutch!
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:31 PM ^
Hutchison is going to be a beast before his M career is over. High motor.... another year or two with strength and conditioning and look out. Beast
September 22nd, 2018 at 6:08 PM ^
Completely agree. He is very advanced in both technique and size for his age. If his trajectory keeps trending in it's current direction he'll be a 1st or a 2nd round pick. For comparison, he's significantly better at the same age than Taco was.
September 22nd, 2018 at 7:19 PM ^
I went to school herehand knew his father Chris well... Believe it that Hutch will be a CONSENSUS All American here .
People were bitching about his recruiting class yet this kid is gonna be a star....
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:39 PM ^
Excellent outing. Two mistakes with the Hudson play and the 3rd & 14 botch in the 1st half, but the D was flowing and attacking.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:39 PM ^
I'll just pre-empt the #HawtTakes folks: They scored in garbage time so the defense sucks.
More seriously, it's the rare game that makes me feel bad for the opposing QB. This was one of them.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:44 PM ^
First time I can remember the announcers openly hoping that the defense stops blitzing because they feel bad for the quarterback
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:40 PM ^
Solid all-around effort. Difficult to shut them out in the 2nd half with such a large lead which automatically leads to a bit of a loss of intensity as backups rotate in more and more.
Hudson needs to be talked to. You can't do that anymore. Next game when you come back at halftime, don't let your frustrations lead you to doing something dumb..show everyone you can play in a controlled fashion.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:40 PM ^
Great performance, but Brown needs to have a serious sit down with Khaleke.
Can we survive a half of football against Northwestern without him? Probably. But if we were to lose him for any one of the MSU, UW or PSU games, we’re in trouble.
I do think the targeting rule needs to be re-evaluated, but rules are rules, and Khaleke simply has to be smarter than this. I have to question why he was even in the game at this point. Why risk a targeting call or an injury to your starting LB when you’re up 40+ points?
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:44 PM ^
He was only in the game because he missed the first half...due to targeting.
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:17 PM ^
And with a, what, 5 score game at halftime, and an 8 score game or so when he got flagged... Why was he even in the game?
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:26 PM ^
bush was also playing well into the 4th. seemed like an unecessary risk to me
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:29 PM ^
If you had practiced hard all week and then had to sit for the first half in a fun blowout, it would be natural to want to be in the game.
i do think he is showing frustration that he isn’t making as much of an impact as last year (maybe eyeing the draft?) and it is showing in these attempts to make the “big hit/play”. Thought the same on that big Q4 QB run where he shot “hell bent for leather”after the RB. — BIG hold on the OL to spring that btw.
I did think Nebraska went with a game plan to target Glasgow in coverage but didn’t have the time or ability to execute it.
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:38 PM ^
Big picture vs. "well, I want to play now." It was completely useless for Hudson to be playing in that situation.
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:37 PM ^
that’s beside the point. he’s one of your starters, a proven playmaker, and you’re up by over 40 points. what is the point of having him out there? you risk a completely unnecessary injury or a targeting call like this for no reason.
i definitely don’t have the football knowledge that Brown and Harbaugh have, but it just seemed like a completely unnecessary risk, to me, to have him out there that late in the game. Regardless of whether or not he couldn’t play in the first half.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:53 PM ^
Bold comment.
September 22nd, 2018 at 5:44 PM ^
I'd go so far as to say that it was a bold move Cotton.
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:19 PM ^
Northwestern’s offense is terrible. Not much speed or athleticism.
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:44 PM ^
He needs to play in games still. If Khaleke doesn't play today at all, then he will start at NW, but won't have seen the field in 2 weeks. Even now, when he comes in next week it's only been one week. The idea that guys have to sit the first half of the next game is ridiculous anyway. That needs to go.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:41 PM ^
I felt truly bad for Martinez, and wish him well. Glad Frost pulled him.
Devin Bush (or Dalvin, as he was known today) is still a beast.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:41 PM ^
Whither Hudson? Not a smart play.
Devin Bush is the truth.
September 22nd, 2018 at 3:45 PM ^
Bush running that ball carrier down for minimal gain on the option play when the guy was a couple steps outside of him when he got the ball was amazing.
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:04 PM ^
That was.... quite impressive.
September 22nd, 2018 at 4:47 PM ^
As soon as that got outside he kicked it to Ludicrous Speed. That was amazing.
