Fran is seriously one of the most pleasant people you could meet
He seriously must just have a limit that is reached upon which all hell is rained down on whomever has wronged him, but the guy is seriously a nice person. I even introduced myself upfront as a Wolverine when we were chatting, he was not an ass, was very gracious and I went so far as saying how much more I liked him than Alford who was an ass. Really bizarre to see him when he goes beastmode. My theory is that he does not regularly ride the refs so things simply build up and the top pops.

So is my Aunt June. Sweet as the day is long. Except when you get a half a glass of wine in her. Saw her stick my uncle between the 3rd and 4th ribs with a hunting knife once.
Boy, Uncle Rod sure did have a lot of blood.

have always wondered what Fran Tarkenton is like in person.

Fran Tarkenton is nice, but full of himself. His son, Matt, went to my school (private K-12 in Atlanta). I was still in jr high when he graduated, but he was the star QB of the football team so I remember him pretty well, as we'd all go to the games (and my sis was in high school, also). Anywho...

I thought he sucked on That's Incredible!
January 22nd, 2014 at 8:30 PM ^
That's Incredible!, you have to admit. No one could tackle that guy. Mad scrambling genius. Ran circles around that tool John Davidson.
January 22nd, 2014 at 11:50 PM ^
To a young Lions' fan the sight of Fran Tarkenton running around was infuriating. Someday Tarkenton is going to assume room temperature and I'm going to dance a jig. I've been waiting a damn long time for that day.
When I was 6 I detested the Vikings as much as Ohio.
Though in FT's defense, how could one *not* suck on That's Incredible? At least he didn't give children nightmares, like Rhonda Bates on Speak Up America.

Maybe should have just posted this in the preview thread...

I like Fran. I like Fran a LOT. Anybody who has the balls to let the sucky B1G officials know they suck and not back down from it has my personal admiration and respect. The B1G coaches are suppose to sit down and shut up when games are stolen from them in Breslin, The Kohl Center and most notably Assembly Hall. They are not to speak of the injustice and the insanely one-sided and biased officiating that occurs in those buildings. Well Fran does and I respect the Hell out of him for it.
I'll be rooting like Hell for Michigan to kick the shit out of Iowa tonight but in every other game the Hawkeyes play they've got this Wolverine's support.

Agree completely 100%. I know we're a society that is supposed to be calm raising one's voice is taboo and "getting mad" is frowned upon. But when you get wronged, man, one should be able to let it be known how he/she is getting jobbed, especially to the person/people who is doing the jobbing. In the USSR and Germany that would have gotten you killed but in college basektball, I applaud Fran's approach of not backing down and getting pissed and maybe trying to change a culture that is flawed.

Are you bummed that Madrox is not a part of the All-New X-Factor? I am. :(

Wish I could do more.

Very sad, I like Gambit, but he is no Madrox. I miss the original X-Factor investigations crew. But as long as Peter David is writing it I will keep reading it.

Don't make "light" of it. He's expressing his feelings.

majority of the board would wonder who the hell I'm talking about. Oh well. The realization I'm getting old sunk in at that moment.

Whenever I see Fran McCaffrey I have the urge to do my taxes. I would be very fiscally responsible if I were an Iowa fan.
January 22nd, 2014 at 5:20 PM ^
I always had a sneaking suspicion that Fran Drescher was a man. Weird that you told him/(her?) that you were a Michigan fan and brought up Steve Alford. To each his own I guess.

What a relief! I thought he might go all Tom Crean on one of our coaches after their loss tonight.

Very insightful of you to point this out. I've always found you to be one of this site's most thoughtful contributors.

Glad we are on a first name basis now.
January 22nd, 2014 at 6:28 PM ^
I've never understood this notion.
If he were to meet the coach or be introduced, they would say "I'm/this is Fran (McCaffrey)". I guess the alternative is Mister McCaffrey, sure. But, like, it's his first name, why are we not to call people by that name? And like, we call athletes by their last name, that's more formal in real life, than the first name. People that don't know me are going to say, "Yo, insert last name", they'll call me by my first name when not formally introduced to one another.
Not a rant toward you, just something I've never understood...again, maybe it goes back to the Mr./Mrs. thing.
January 22nd, 2014 at 6:39 PM ^
I think the issue is more about us not automatically knowing which Fran he's talking about.
We don't refer to our own coach as "John" for much the same reason.

I can tell you that very nice people blow a gasket out there, especially in the face of moral outrage like the officiating at the Kohl Center. I would have done it in his place and been proud. My wife, from southeastern Michigan, would frown upon that (although she gets more morally outraged than I do, but about different things). Cultural difference.
