Personnel info and questions
I wanted to discuss some individual player information from the game with the board. First, the records:
- Jeremy Gallon - With his 175 yards today he has 1284 on the season, just 46 yards behind the single season record set by Braylon Edwards in 2004. He also set the record today for most receiving yards by a Michigan player against OSU.
- Blake Countess - I checked to see where his 6 interceptions stack up in the all-time records, but they aren't even close. The record is 10 by Tom Curtis in 1968. The most recent season high is 8 by Woodson in 1997. Countess is tied with a bunch of people for 7th all-time.
- Devin Gardner - With his amazing day today (451 passing, 10 rushing) he finishes with 3443 total yards. This puts him second all-time for total yards behind Denard's record setting 2010 season (4272). He passed John Navarre (3240) for second.
Now for the players who didn't play today. Anyone have any information on these guys?
- Jarrod Wilson - He didn't play at all and as a result the first two OSU touchdowns were significantly the result of bad plays by Furman and Avery.
- Brenden Gibbons - All I heard today was that he hurt his leg and was on crutches. Anyone know the story?
- Richard Ash - Anyone know why he saw meaningful snaps? I'm not saying he did badly (couldn't tell), just curious why he was on the field given our struggles to stop the run. Just rotating more guys?
- James Ross - Any report on what his injury is?
Controversial Calls:
- Did anyone see something that caused the Frank Clark unsportsmanlike penalty? They didn't show anything on TV that seemed to justify it, but I was wondering if they just didn't catch it or the refs called the wrong number. Dumb play, dumb call, or both?
- What is the consensus on the Gardner fumble? I was SHOCKED that they upheld the call. I'm not sure what the replay guys look at as there were two TD calls in the Alabama/Auburn game that the refs went against what I expected.

Clark's penalty had to be something he said - must have been pretty bad.

They could have also warned him. But yes that was one of the few drives stopped, and it was stopped twice.
November 30th, 2013 at 7:51 PM ^
that a person can say that should merit a 15 yard penalty. you could literally say "I hope your mother gets rabes in her uterus" to the ref and a 15 yard penalty is stupid.
November 30th, 2013 at 7:58 PM ^
mouths off to a ref I'm ok with the penalty....

He was warned after the brawl tho. Continuing to go on like that does warrent the penulty.

There's no way that should have been called. Every guy on the field was talking for 60 minutes. It's a rivalry game. Put the whistle away. Really frustrating along with that atrocious decision on the fumble. I don't know how you miss that with replay. And it was Confirmed!! Not even just "Stands!"

His words must have involved an unnatural act between the official's wife and a goat, because that kind of stuff never gets called.

Michigan was screwed by the officials multiple times, including the absolutely egregious uphold on the fumble. That said, it really didn't matter. One play and three yards to win.

He put his facemask in Braxton Miller's hand.

All the defenders are right there, it's going to take time for the recievers to separate, taking the defenders with them so the QB needs to be cool as a cucumber while this take place. Devin needing to wait in the pocket as it's collapsing for this to happen? No, not the best play.

I'm happy for the guys buy remember they get 12 games now. A lot of these records are when they played 10 or 11 games a season.

On one of the angles, I may have seen a little light under his knee, but I was still shocked when they said, "confirmed." I can understand not overturning the call, but based on the other 5 angles, it sure looked like he was down. I'd like to know what defines when a fumble occurs. Is it when the hit is made that jostles the ball loose, or is it when it leaves the player's hands?

Gardner's fumble looked questionable to me. I was there and saw the play, saw the replays, it all looked like he was down. Frank Clark's unsportsmanlike had to have been something verbal because nothing physical happened on the play.

Brian tweeted that Wilson had a big cast on his hand. Ash likely played more because he's big. I wonder what's up with Washington – he's big too but he seems to get less snaps.

Washington supposedly has a back issue that has been flaring up all season.

I acknowledge that Gardner made some bad decisions at points this season and kind of went into a psychological shell for most of October and November, but I still believe that he's a special talent who's capable of extraordinary things. I really hope, for his sake and his future's sake, that we can roll out a decent OL next season. It's really fun watching him operate with a little bit of protection.
I also noticed him take a little bit more of assertive role with his teammates today, which I think is necessary for his development as a leader. I don't pretend to know what's happening behind the scenes with these guys, but there are little hints that Devin doesn't have the biggest leader image amongst his teammates.
November 30th, 2013 at 9:12 PM ^
he reminds me of Young, but maybe not the same level or ceiling. But the beginning of the year he had some of those moves where the defender just looked stupid.

I don't remember seeing Gibbons on crutches, but I wasn't in the best position. He was spotted in street clothes - as others have mentioned - during special teams warmup and thus the news that he was out. Supposedly, he tweaked something in practice but I don't think there has been specific information as yet. There were photos floating about on twitter around gametime of him in sweats and his jersey.
November 30th, 2013 at 8:13 PM ^
They showed him on TV a couple times and he was definitely on crutches at one point.
November 30th, 2013 at 8:09 PM ^
Pretty sure Ash's presence was an attempt to add beef given the success OSU had going up the middle. It's a real tough out when they can do that. I'm optimistic that that will be our future.
People in the stands were saying Clark said something to the OSU sideline. Might not have been the words so much as a taunting thing to the sideline. Was there some reporting on TV to the contrary?
November 30th, 2013 at 8:20 PM ^
Announcers were saying that he was jawing at Miller

On DG's fumble, everyone that was sitting in my section (including OSU fans) and I saw the replay on the monitor and were all in agreement it clearly was not a fumble. Needless to say we were all shocked when it was in fact confirmed. Must've been an angle we didn't get to see at the game that proved it, because I thought it was a pretty easy call to overturn.
November 30th, 2013 at 8:24 PM ^
Looked pretty clear on TV that his knee was down, in my opinion. The announcing team said the same thing. They didn't show a good replay of the Hyde fumble, I don't think. I thought he might have been down as well.
November 30th, 2013 at 8:32 PM ^
On the Hyde fumble, it was definitely a fumble; he came down on someone, he never hit the ground.
As for Devin's, that was terrible. I'm not sure what replay they were seeing in the booth, but it must have been a different game.

I hate Spielman as an announcer. I loved him as a Detroit Lion, but that doesn't make up for his odd commentary.
November 30th, 2013 at 8:46 PM ^
DG fumble was as bad as a call as I've seen in a Michigan game on TV in a long time. That impacted the game in a huge way.

I think if Borges does not in fact, get fired after the season, maybe we should be looking for a new quaterback coach who is also capable of calling all offensive plays.
November 30th, 2013 at 9:01 PM ^
So if Borges doens't get fired, you would be in favor of hiring someone that does everything that he does? And that would leave Borges to do what exactly? Also, if Michigan were to hire a QB coach, they would have to fire another assistant. The NCAA only allows for nine assitants.
December 1st, 2013 at 7:10 AM ^
If we must keep him I would just like to see someone else calling the plays. Just saying. Besides, why do we have two linebacker and two d-line coaches? Is this necessary? Don't you think we need a QB coach? Did you like the 2pt conv call? Also, what say you about our speacial teams play?
