It was embarrasing. But it was a meaningless regular season game. Better to have a wake up call now when less is on the line than like last year in the tournament

I care about making a deep tournament run much more than a big ten championship, which has become basically a meaningless title since the big ten tournament.

attitude and heart, this team is NOT getting to the Sweet 16. They clearly don't have the leadership and experience to get very far. Talent yes. But, that isn't nearly enough.

Snowflakes? This is going to be a goddamn blizzard.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:13 PM ^
This is as bad as Kansas's loss to TCU
February 27th, 2013 at 9:38 PM ^
It's worse.

Sums up how I feel. I don't know how much more I can yell at the TV to block out and play some damn D! Every team outhustles us.....every one. What the hell? It is McGary and THJ playing with emotion and that is it. A whole game of "Aw shucks" defense.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:28 PM ^
Remember that these are kids, most of them can't even drink. It is inevitable that there will be some growing pains. How about we put together a highlight reel of all the stupid mistakes mgobloggers made in their twenties and then we broadcast it on television.
You can be sad that we lost - it hurts, I know - but think about how you would feel if someone was saying those things about your kid.
February 28th, 2013 at 12:31 AM ^
i cant imagine what the team is thinking right now - just gotta MIB mind erase this one.
also, i think the team is calling themselves the same stuff this guy is saying, probably worse. they arent kids - they are grown men who know how to take the heat when they lose to the worst team in the conference. no need to coddle them.
What i would question would be beilein defenses in his coaching career - has this guy put up elite type defenses? I am questioning the man's defensive coaching ceiling without any basis here but he may not have a solid defensive mind.
February 28th, 2013 at 12:42 AM ^
Stauskas was the worst offender. 12 points on 9 shots does not make up for his deficiencies on the other end of the floor. What happened to the swag?
I want to say it's time for him to come off the bench instead of start, but who do we put in his place...?
February 27th, 2013 at 8:43 PM ^
I think Belein needs to be seriously questioned. He has completely lost this team, and the effort on defense is beyond embarassing.
February 27th, 2013 at 8:46 PM ^
The only reason we're all so righteously pissed right now is because Beilein took us from the netherworld all the way up to the point where we were expecting to be a 1-seed
February 27th, 2013 at 8:49 PM ^
February 27th, 2013 at 8:50 PM ^
I'm not saying that his job should be questioned. I'm saying there are legitimate questions to ask about how he is preparing the team and why they are getting worse as the season goes on.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:04 PM ^
That's fair. But to say he has "completely lost this team" when they are 23-5 is going overboard.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:36 PM ^
I dunno. 3-4 in the month of February. A complete whooping at the hands of Sparty, poor coaching decisions down the stretch that led to an OT loss to Wisconsin, barely and uninspiringly hanging on at home against the worst team in the B1G and now, when at least a share of the Big Ten title was in our control, we just gave PSU their first conference win of the season when we were up by 15 with 10 minutes left.
There's an immense amount of talent on this team, enough to win a national championship I dare say. Understandbly, any team is going to struggle in this conference, however, the way we tumbled so suddenly and in such apathetic fashion is inexcusable. To say Beilein has lost this team (to a very mild extent) is not as far fetched as it seems. A team doesn't just go from #1 on Feb 3rd to by the end of the month having 4 more losses, including one against the worst team in the conference, unless mental mistakes are occuring by all members of the team, coaches and players alike.
Now, do I think Beilein lost this team? No. From what I heard from sources directly connected to the program, they've been lost since day one; At each other's throats and not getting along by the time the freshmen first rolled in. That lack of comraderie and morale is finally affecting them as their pure talent can no longer coast them through games this late in the season. They need to wake up and decide if they want to be champs. We'll know on Sunday what they decided to do.
February 27th, 2013 at 10:22 PM ^
I had thought the off-the-court chemistry was pretty good
Or was I just eating up the mgoblue and mlive feel-good stories?
February 28th, 2013 at 7:10 AM ^
... in the person of Trey Burke.
February 28th, 2013 at 10:32 AM ^
people were trying to compare them to the Fab 5 which is ridiculous. Its the most talent we have had in 15 years, but that is not saying a whole lot.

February 27th, 2013 at 8:44 PM ^
Sweet 16 and that's all folks. Too young, and an overreliance on Burke.
February 27th, 2013 at 8:47 PM ^
Sweet 16 would be amazing with the way we have played this entire month. Seriously, our last dominant game was Jan 30th vs Northwestern. Even when we beat Illinois this past week, we played one good half only.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:04 PM ^
Any 15 seed that can commit to outhustling them and outworking them has a real good shot of winning. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they lost in the first round. Also wouldn't surprise me to see them in the Final Four. Such a wishy washy and confusing team...
February 27th, 2013 at 8:44 PM ^
That was terrible. Only snowflake was Beilien actually calling out Stauskas' on his pathetic defense
February 27th, 2013 at 9:04 PM ^
am i you? Nice post ^
February 27th, 2013 at 8:45 PM ^
Absolutely no rotations on defense. Morgan is the only one who even looks to have a clue on defense. Pathetically bad. Stauskas needs to sit whether that's in favor of Caris(who brings good defense) or McGary who would give us two bigs and more intensity, I do not know. But either way he needs to come off the bench.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:00 PM ^
I think I agree. Stauskas is becoming a liability. His 20% 3-pt. these days shooting isn't worthy of keeping him on the floor.
February 27th, 2013 at 8:45 PM ^
meh, all things considered, i'd much rather lose this game than lose in 3 weeks.
February 27th, 2013 at 8:56 PM ^
you make it sound as though the two are mutually exclusive
February 27th, 2013 at 9:11 PM ^
February 28th, 2013 at 1:48 AM ^
Bad game? They haven't played well in weeks. This team refuses to hustle defensively, and it's gonna kill them in the BT tournament and the NCAA tournament.
February 27th, 2013 at 8:59 PM ^
Well, it's a good thing that's how it works. Since we lost now, it's guaranteed that we won't lose in three weeks. I don't know why every team doesn't follow this awesome strategy.
Maybe losing this game and looking like crap during the past few weeks is a good indicator that we will lose in three weeks.

How does this comment still have 2 points? This is idiotic and typical of an ESPN.COM comment. Is your IQ lower than tonight's score?

February 27th, 2013 at 9:14 PM ^
How did Herm get sent to Bolivia? This better be epic.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:20 PM ^
Herm remembers when Bolivia was called "Upper Peru," and probably prefers to still refer to it thusly.
