OT: Deadspin article on story of the death of Manti te'o's girlfriend being hoax *UNLOCKED*
Got the link from the EDSBS twitter. Deadspin is putting a lot on the line with an article like this so I hope they've done their homework. It does raise a few flags when a picture of "her" is someone else entirely. Take it FWIW.
Thread is going back up with profit's approval after a quick discussion between us, especially with CBS Radio picking it up. There will probably be a few of the subsequent threads deleted; I'll explain each that I take down in the Moderator Action Stickey.
As a quick reminder, please keep comments to the standards we've come to expect from the MGoBoard. JGB
Edit two: I didn't take down the other threads, so the promised explanations didn't happen in the sticky. If you think a thread was taken down in error, I apologize, but it's now disappeared into the internet. From what I saw, most had served their purpose when this thread was unlocked. JGB.

Tough for Deadspin to post this if it's not legit. I wonder how the mainstream media will cover this, since they covered his story the first time around.

This is insane..maybe the kid that died on scissor lift was a hoax too..
I keed, i keed!!

I cannot wait for TWIS

or a way to give him a GF so no one asked why there wasn't one. (NTTAAWWT)

So if this "girlfriend" actually does/did exist, it sounds like he wasn't too faithful to her.

January 17th, 2013 at 12:36 AM ^
Because a star football player on campus had "plenty of girls around him" automatically means he wasn't faithful?
January 17th, 2013 at 6:48 AM ^
I be the imaginary girlfriend is pissed at him.
January 16th, 2013 at 4:31 PM ^
Very interesting
Seems that they've done a lot of investigative work into it. Can't doubt them

that GIF it's almost as good as the guy from that TV show that nobody ever watched.
January 16th, 2013 at 4:34 PM ^
My mind is blown. I don't even know what to think. That'd be unheard of to put a story like this if it wasn't true...

January 16th, 2013 at 4:36 PM ^
OH LAWD TE'O, YOU DONE GOOFED.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:38 PM ^
This is all incredibly interesting (& intriguing)...
January 16th, 2013 at 5:20 PM ^
Notre Dame has now admitted it was a hoax, and Te'o was "a victim".
January 16th, 2013 at 5:21 PM ^
That makes sense.
What?
January 16th, 2013 at 5:34 PM ^
I need to start using that line...

First Rudy was off-sides then years later goes to jail. The ND nation is stunned when they realize that they have worshipped a criminal, a felon.
Then secondly Teo invents an internet GF so people will feel sorry for him? Say what? Are there no hot women in SB? Hell I even seen some cute Nuns in my day. WTF Teo???
All of this from a religious school which prides itself on integrity. Then to top it off, the school releases a statement saying Teo was a "victim" of a hoax and doesnt come clean? Now the Administration is covering for a liar, which in turn, makes them a lair. And we get curcified because Chris announced he was going pro and then took money BEFORE he dropped his classes. If Chris went to the Registrars Office first and then took an envelope full of cash in the hallway, there would not be a problem.
What in God's name is going on over there in SB? If we cant trust ND to be perfect, who can we trust? .../s
Every news organization is running with this.
January 16th, 2013 at 6:02 PM ^
The cover up never works. Time to come clean Manti.
January 16th, 2013 at 7:08 PM ^
Wait, I'm confused.
He is a victim of a hoax, and yet (at least according to my understanding) he helped perpetrate the hoax for months?

What about the mod standards. Long live North Korea. Maybe we should just speculate the fate of Hagerup leaving to Arizona...........

My apologies. Just trying to protect the MGoBrand. Feel free to voice your concerns to Brian and/or Seth. I won't take offense - I try my best but am human.

who down voted me thanking a guy for apologizing.
January 16th, 2013 at 6:32 PM ^
... just some idiot I guess (but not ME, fool...)

January 16th, 2013 at 6:33 PM ^
I don't know who did that, but I voted this down for complaining about downvoting.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:43 PM ^
I agree with what you did FWIW...Trying to Protect the Brand (like Notre Dame, as they're currently doing, zing). People need to not freak out that they aren't able to communicate about something on internet message boards (no offense, mongoose0614).
January 16th, 2013 at 5:37 PM ^
I can understand frustration with our work at times, but this is subjective stuff. I can promise you every way I know how that profitgoblue acted in good faith and tried to use his best judgment for the welfare of the site and the board. We both make our mistakes, but I think comparing our actions here to North Korea is a little on the extreme end.
If you disagree with something we've done, that's completely fine with us; you can say something directly to profit or myself (politely, please) in a thread, you can call something to our/the staff's attention on the moderator action sticky, or you can email Brian (contact information at the top of the page).
January 16th, 2013 at 6:06 PM ^
idea that something is true before this place blows up. I can go to MLive and catch that if I so desire. Once we have something solid on which to base our posts, we can still invoke RR (Rudy and the Rest) to our hearts content.
Hail to the Mod Team. I also notice that they stayed right on top of this, and unlocked it when it was evident those noxious fumes were the result of a tire fire.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:20 PM ^
ND is saying Te'o was not part of the hoax. If that is true you have to feel bad for the guy.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:22 PM ^
well of course they are. its full crisis containment mode. notre dame and teo both stand to lose millions over this shit, especially if it can be proved that teo indeed knew about the alleged fraud.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:46 PM ^
Yeah, there is absolutely no way they won't use the Catfish(online relationship with a fake person) defense here. Reading through it though, there's too many holes to really believe thatdefense, after all he claimed he met her in person.
January 16th, 2013 at 8:55 PM ^
Also, Skype exists, so that argument doesn't really make sense. Who wouldn't Skype with their long distance girlfriend?

Maybe he was talking to cleverbot and was convinced
January 16th, 2013 at 5:24 PM ^
How would that even be possible? He's been asked countless questions about her without ever denying anything.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:23 PM ^
I don't understand. How could he not be part of the hoax? Didn't he tell the girlfriend story to the media?
January 16th, 2013 at 5:30 PM ^
exactly...and of course if he wasn't part of the hoax, he had a girlfriend that he had never met!
January 16th, 2013 at 5:43 PM ^
That's what living your life through that Myspace will get you. Fake girlfriends. The internet has ruined courting and impaired a generation.

ROFL, I was fibbing. This time, I did indeed laugh out loud.

Herm, your grandkids used myspace. Your great grandkids are now using Twitter and Facebook. :)
