semi-OT: Columbus sports radio makes offensive tweet about Desmond Howard, joins Luke Fickell's pizza boy in the penalty box
Never a dull moment in America's number one evolutionary anthopology lab. To recap (other information is on 11w and other sources if you're actually interested in following up on this kerfuffle):
Torg (of Columbus 97.1 FM sports radio fame 'Common Man and the Torg' tweets that he wishes Desmond Howard would get fired or die so he could watch GameDay again.
Herbstreit comes to Desmond Howard's defense on Columbus station 97.1 Monday with a long and indignant rant calling out the Torg without actually mentioning Torg by name.
Common Man mentions on Monday's show later that afternoon that co-host Torg is "resting" and will return later. He also has some choice words for Fake Buckeyes that did not explicitly mention any well-coiffed former OSU quarterbacks who happened to wear no. 4 and got knocked out in the 1991 Heisman game.
Pass the popcorn and/or Iacono's pizza.

This really shows how much the people that are fans of that school are vile pieces of shit.
Karma will catch up to him.

One idiot on the radio does not speak for an entire fan base.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:15 PM ^
Yes, said idiot DOES speak for the entire fan base. That is how buckeye assholes are.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:22 PM ^
Technically, it's two radio idiots. It was the aptly named "common man" who called Herbstreit a Fake Buckeye for suggesting that perhaps Desmond Howard should be allowed to continue living, Torg's Gameday viewership be damned.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:51 PM ^
Agreed. I will, however, point out that Herbstreit was forced to move out of Ohio due to death threats by their fan base. That's still probably a relatively small portion of their fan base, but this isn't just one idiot.
October 16th, 2012 at 4:57 PM ^
I have some choice words for that asshat. It's a joke that he's allowed to turn a Metro Detroit radio station into 4 hours of let's bash the Wolverine fan base.
October 16th, 2012 at 5:59 PM ^
97.1 hosts ordered by how horrible they are.
- Pat Caputo
- Terry Foster
- Mike Valenti
- Dennis Fithian
- Jaime
- Karsch
- Gator
- Wojo
People can fit Stoney, Bill, and whoever else in there wherever because I don't listen to them. The point being that at least Valenti doesn't pretend to be neutral.
October 17th, 2012 at 9:36 AM ^
I generally can't get through more than a minute or two of Caputo before turning it off regardless of what the topic is....Truly an asshat.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:12 PM ^
but it seems to happen time and time again
October 16th, 2012 at 1:42 PM ^
It does feel like the incidence rate is probably higher among the Buckeye fanbase.
October 16th, 2012 at 11:22 PM ^
Outside of cbus or east landfill and I would agree with you!
October 16th, 2012 at 12:07 PM ^
October 16th, 2012 at 12:09 PM ^
who hasn't forgiven Desmond's hesiman pose. What a hater...
October 16th, 2012 at 1:53 PM ^
to be posed on. Deal.

October 16th, 2012 at 12:13 PM ^
..no that happened when decided to poop in coolers.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:25 PM ^
Or when that guy dunked his face in hot wee in exchange for the price of one of my boots.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:21 PM ^
I'm pretty sure Herbstreit and his house in Tennessee think it's more than one redneck.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:25 PM ^
I think it's telling not only that he moved away from Ohio, but also that he deems the rednecks in Tennessee less crazy than the ones around Columbus.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:25 PM ^
I guess you haven't spent any time in Nashville. It is a very nice place to live which, from my perspective, has a hell of a lot more to offer than the city of Columbus. While receiving threats may have been the impetus for Herbstreit to leave Columbus, in my book he improved where he lived, and not only because OSU is located in Columbus.
October 16th, 2012 at 6:36 PM ^
I've spent extensive time in Tennessee, as my girlfriend and her family are from it. I actually like it there a lot, but one should always poke fun at Ohio when given the opportunity.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:28 PM ^
At least in any state other than that state. Of course all the tOSU fans are that way, including my dear aunt. I only speak to her 51 weeks out of the year.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:55 PM ^
"entire" is a very strong word. I would go with "complete, with a few exceptions". But if you're not (aka Herbstreit), they call you "fake"
October 16th, 2012 at 4:29 PM ^
You see, a pimp's love is very different from that of a square.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:11 PM ^
its amazing how quickly OSU turns against their own. herbstreit is a perfect example of "when keeping it real goes wrong"
October 16th, 2012 at 12:13 PM ^
Well... to be *perfectly* fair to the Torg, I am sure he did later apologize if anyone was offended.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:50 PM ^
Do you honestly believe that "apology" was sincere?
October 16th, 2012 at 1:07 PM ^
and that's why it was phrased as it was. There are 2 "apologies" in modern society. There is the "I'm sorry for what I did" actual apology, and the "I'm sorry if I offended anyone" faux apology. The latter states "I am not sorry for what I did, I'm sorry for your reaction to what I did". That's not a real apology.

October 16th, 2012 at 12:18 PM ^
Is 97.1 the official radio frequency of the big mouthed douchebag?
October 16th, 2012 at 1:07 PM ^
Empirical evidence seems to suggest that the answer to you question is, "YES".
October 16th, 2012 at 12:18 PM ^
I really don't know why Ohio fans dislike Herbstreit so much. Is it really because he's one of the most objective commentators in the mainstream? To be honest, Desmond is a homer, although not quite as bad as Holtz, and I wish he would be more like Herbstriet in his commentating. Sometimes I find homerism embarrasing. But maybe that's just me.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:22 PM ^
This guy would like a word with you.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:56 PM ^
I don't watch Game Day too often, but I don't think I've ever seen Desmond be a homer. Most of the time, if he would appear to be a homer from an outside perspective, it seems to me that it's in a scenario like the one before the Purdue game. Everyone picked Purdue. He picked Michigan. He was right.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:04 PM ^
October 16th, 2012 at 1:18 PM ^
See, that's a bit outlandish, but that's something I didn't see, which is why I wouldn't think of him as a homer.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:25 PM ^
I really don't know why Ohio fans dislike Herbstreit so much.
Because he's not enough of a homer, and dares to put on his objective commentator hat and criticize his alma mater. The trailer wing of the fanbase thinks he should be their guy on the inside, and he isn't.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:26 PM ^
Herbie seems like a pretty cool guy. Good dude.
October 16th, 2012 at 2:01 PM ^
I agree completely, I have more respect for Herbstreit after listening to his comments. Good man Herbie.
October 16th, 2012 at 9:35 PM ^
I actually think he is pretty good on Gameday. Don't get me wrong I can't stand the Buckeyes as a team or oranization but rivalry aside, he seems like a good person.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:30 PM ^
October 16th, 2012 at 12:32 PM ^
There's a whole long dark backstory to why Herbie is Ohio's #1 frenemy, but among other things he's had an.... adversarial relationship with Terrelle Pryor even before Tat-gate, he dropped OSU from #6 to #9 after the 2010 sugar bowl that never took place, he said he wouldn't send his kid to play offense under the Tressel regime, and there's of course the whole bit about moving to Tennessee.
They're pretty thin-skinned here in Ohio, although their amateur-hour loathing of Herbie has got nothing on our hatred of Rosenberg and the Boren Snowplow Conglomerate.
And lastly, re: 97.1 in Columbus... if anyone of you have also listened to it, sure Common Man and the Torg are par-for-the-course bad, but Dimitrious Stanley is 100x worse to listen to.
October 16th, 2012 at 12:41 PM ^
Kirk was pretty much right on all those things.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:13 PM ^
And that's why I have more than an ounce of respect for Kirk. His coolness towards Pryor was palpable from the beginning, and he was right to not jump on that corrupt bandwagon. He obviously bleeds OSU colors, but can step out from behind the blinders and see the big picture.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:06 PM ^
We're talking about football!!! Herbstreit isn't hurting anybody or even insulting anybody. He is offering up, seemingly, unbiased opinions about a game and getting death threats for it. There simply isn't any justification, rationalization, etc. for any threatening behavior, except, "It's Ohio."
October 16th, 2012 at 1:06 PM ^
Somehow, I think ESPN and College GameDay will find a way to carry on without "the Torg" viewing their program.
October 16th, 2012 at 1:25 PM ^
Maybe I'm missing something but why can't Torg (whatever the Hell a "Torg" is) want Desmond removed from Gameday? Why is he on the timeout step for tweeting he doesnt like listening to a particular announcer?
I feel the same way about the Notre Dame announcing crew or the Yankee-loving asshats at TBS/TNT. Are we not allowed to voice our displeasure anymore?
I don't agree with Torg at all but I'm missing exactly why he's not allowed to voice his opinion here. And how is saying he wants him removed so he can start watching Gameday again "offensive"?
October 16th, 2012 at 1:32 PM ^
Wishing for someone to die might be, unless the statement is explicitly phrased in such a manner that humor is obvious. Since Mr. Herb seems to have a problem with it, I'm guessing it was delivered in a Dantonioesque fashion.
