I have my MLIS from there but I will laugh hysterically at this for the next few minutes.
August 30th, 2012 at 11:57 PM ^
Why did they tackle him? They should've waited until he got to the endzone and scored 2 for it, lol. Maybe next time...
August 31st, 2012 at 12:25 AM ^
& then goad him into tossing you the ball for a TD.
"Don't throw that ball at me"
August 31st, 2012 at 9:04 AM ^
Everyone was just so confused by what was happening that instinct (i.e., tackle the guy with the ball) bumped reason out of the way momentarily. .
August 31st, 2012 at 9:28 AM ^
If we forget that the people who tackled him probally had no idea hwat was going on, they should have tackeled him inside the 10. In a perfect world they would have tackled him at the goaline.
August 30th, 2012 at 9:17 PM ^
Not sure what's worse. The Kent State players returning it the wrong way, or all of Towson actually trying to chase him down to prevent him from getting the safety
August 30th, 2012 at 9:25 PM ^
the trash talking after the 'return'
August 30th, 2012 at 10:50 PM ^
Epic would have been his own teammates having to tackle him to prevent the safety.
KSU guy on the 10, high stepping and starting to prematurely celebrate a bit and one of his teammates spears him. I would have lost at least two internal organs due to laughing.

Question: With the new taunting rules in place, if he had high-stepped his way into the end zone, would the refs have nullified the safety? MIND ASPLODE
August 31st, 2012 at 10:15 AM ^
Yes, the penalty would nullify the safety, but of course Towson would decline the penalty and take the points. I assume that no team has ever declined an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, but this would be a situation where you would want to do that.
August 30th, 2012 at 9:18 PM ^
Dudes were blocking too! Great stuff.
August 30th, 2012 at 9:19 PM ^
I thought a muffed punt couldn't be advanced...err, declined? Either way, still hilarious.
August 30th, 2012 at 9:26 PM ^
I guess the NCAA never thought about this happening when they made the rules
August 30th, 2012 at 9:21 PM ^
Nice way to start the year, Kent! Who is coaching this cluster$#@#%?
(OSU coaching tree, I believe.)
August 30th, 2012 at 9:22 PM ^
Huh, maybe some guys do play football while stoned.
August 30th, 2012 at 9:24 PM ^
Not shocked if they were. It's Kent State....
August 30th, 2012 at 9:23 PM ^
Wait a minute, Wait a minute, HOLY MOLY
August 30th, 2012 at 9:30 PM ^
Ok. Did ANYONE else think of Little Giants?
"I'm gonna score a touchdown! I'M GONNA SCORE A TOUCHDOWN!!"
August 30th, 2012 at 10:24 PM ^
Works great with your sig too haha
August 30th, 2012 at 9:35 PM ^
I'm fairly confident he thought the return man touched the ball, hence the return.
August 30th, 2012 at 9:37 PM ^
Still doesn't explain running backwards....
August 31st, 2012 at 12:00 AM ^
We are laughing at you, not with you.
August 30th, 2012 at 9:40 PM ^
I can't imagine being this poor guy. The best he can hope for is that this gets him free drinks in Akron for the rest of his life.
August 30th, 2012 at 9:50 PM ^
He becomes Kent State's top return man, catches the eyes of NFL scouts, gets drafted and makes the Pro Bowl.
But he will probably have to settle for being the #1 play on Sportscenter Not Top Ten Plays
August 30th, 2012 at 10:25 PM ^
Dear lord I hope the first scenario doesn't happen for the sole reason that I don't want to hear about it everytime Musburger is on a broadcast.
August 30th, 2012 at 9:47 PM ^
He talks shit afterwards too, and it looks like he doesn't realize it until he's halfway off the field.
August 30th, 2012 at 9:50 PM ^
Please?
August 30th, 2012 at 9:52 PM ^
It sure seems like Kent State would benefit from a preseason or an exhibition game, but I'm sure glad they weren't afforded that opportunity.

August 30th, 2012 at 10:18 PM ^
The return man attempted to get out of the way of the ball but then tried to catch it off the hop and fumbled, the Towson players tackled Parker instead of letting him run for a safety, and a few Kent State players threw some blocks on the "return". And it was a pretty impressive return even if it was the wrong way.

Hello not top 10!
August 30th, 2012 at 10:20 PM ^
Can someone who has played football at a high level explain what any of these people are thinking? I don't understnand how this can happen.
August 30th, 2012 at 10:41 PM ^
1. This is not football at a high level.
2. The instinct to tackle the guy with the ball overshadows any nagging thoughts like "Wait, WTF?" The kids were probably thinking it was the wrong way, but none of them wanted to be the one to stop pursuing, especially since everyone else on the field was playing as usual. Herd mentality is actually a pretty cool thing.
August 30th, 2012 at 11:47 PM ^
is still a D1 football player. Most likely it's somebody who has been playing the game since they were a kid, you think running the ball in the correct direction would be ingrained into the player's brain at this point.
August 31st, 2012 at 1:03 AM ^
A high school player with even one MAC offer is in the top what, one percent, of football players nationwide? Even that might be a little on the generous side. This is definitely high level football, even if KSU isn't super elite like the bigger conference schools.
August 31st, 2012 at 1:46 AM ^
Much more of a time commitment. If I could do it all over again, I would try to get into one of the DIII lacrosse schools in Maryland (assuming I could learn the game).
August 31st, 2012 at 1:58 AM ^
I was actually talking this evening about how I was glad DI hockey wasn't an option for me. I was ripping on a certain softball coach yet again and realized what life would be like in a high level hockey program (and how little chance I would have to get tons of ice time). Forty hours a week plus classes spanning two semesters doesn't sound that appealing at this point.
Of course, to high school justingoblue that might be a different story.

can fuel efforts that may seem impossible to a more jaded older adult.
For college chess, my options were basically UTD (no), Chicago (possible), or Maryland. There are some other teams but those are the biggest three teams. We talked about setting up matches with other schools at the Michigan chess club but I never participated in a match.
August 31st, 2012 at 2:12 AM ^
I did as well (another case of "would have been a terrible fit"...I think). If so, what was your essay topic? It's plenty nerdy, but still interesting to hear.
August 31st, 2012 at 2:21 AM ^
Chicago did not have a great engineering school so I did not wind up applying there. Maryland had the strongest engineering out of the 3 so likely that would be my "chess school". Nowadays I rep Team Michigan in intense correspondence chess battles.
August 31st, 2012 at 2:37 AM ^
has no engineering school. This is the essay prompt I responded to:
The University of Chicago has a venerable tradition of seminar-based learning, in which students and professors gather around the classroom table to discuss ideas. Less venerable, but no less valuable, is our tradition of conversation around another table–the dinner table. Indeed, on any given night you will find members of our student community breaking bread together, discussing everything from The Symposium to The Simpsons. We in the admissions office would argue that a community can be defined by its table—by its shape, by who finds a seat there, by what transpires there, by what is inspired there. Tell us about your table.
Still one of my favorite writing pieces I've done, even though a Buckeye made a paragraph long appearance (to be fair she wasn't all scarlet and grey at the time this was written, there was some good left in her, ala Return of the Jedi).
August 31st, 2012 at 11:14 AM ^
Chicago doesn't have an engineering school yet Fermi built the first nuclear fission reactor under the grandstands of thier football field at the time.
August 31st, 2012 at 11:04 AM ^
Would ever do this....

Sorry to be the one to say this, but the refs ended up making the correct call: Kent State ball at the spot of the fumble recovery (the Towson 7 yard line), first and goal. None of that wrong-way return actually happened.
The punt was not fumbled; it was muffed. A muffed kick can not be advanced if it is recovered by the kicking team.
