OT - NFL docks Redskins $36 million and Cowboys $10 million in Cap Space
http://nfl.si.com/2012/03/12/nfl-hits-cowboys-redskins-hard-by-docking-…
Not sure how this works since it doesn't seem like either team did anything outside of the rules. $36 Million (even if spread out over 2 years) is a huge hit and will end up changing the NFL FA landscape.
it seems like both teams front loaded contracts to take advantage of the uncapped year (i.e. setting up a contract to have a large hit in a year where there was no cap). The NFL supposedly, allegedly warned teams not to do this. Now they are smiting these transgressors with the might of Thor.
NFL is penalizing each team for cheating the system during the uncapped 2010 year. Both teams front-loaded contracts. I guess the Redskins did much more of it.
THANKS DAN SNYDER! ANOTHER GREAT MOVE!
What a disaster of an organization. St. Louis came out of the RGIII trade with pure gold, Jerry!
seriously, who thinks the redskins won't have a top10 pick next year as well?
they wont, they traded it. the 36 mill wont hit the Skins too hard. it will be spread out over 2 years. even if they take 17 mill this year they will still have more cap room then 50% of the other teams in the NFL.
That's my point, St. Louis got a high #2 in 2012, and given how hamstrung Washington will be with the cap, a high #1 in 2013 and 2014 as well, for moving down 4 spots.
the Skins arent hamstrung with the cap. even IF this 36 mill. stand, they still have almost 30 mill in cap space. but i agree that they will still only be a 5-7 win team this year.
By all accounts, he was a business wiz and started and merged several businesses successfully at a very young age, yet he's an utter failure as an NFL owner. I suppose ego must be one of the answers, as by all accounts he also is a dick.
Snyder gets a bad wrap, even from us Skins fans, but his problem is the same problem you would have if you owned your favorite team. sometimes you try too hard to be good.

Thats his problem, the most successfull owners are more hands off rather than fancying themselves talent evalulators.
Sometimes I like the NFL for a few minutes at a time. Mostly I ignore it entirely.
Warn teams not to go over cap. Then penalize them 2 years after the infractions occur.
A real shame, because the Redskins had 40 mil in cap space to buy RG3 some new toys to play with. The 36 will have to be paid over 2 years, maybe 18 this year, and 18 the next year. It's manageable for the Redskins, as long as they go Moneyball. They were thinking of going after Vincent Jackson, but that might not be such an good option now.
I suspect the NFL is on shaky legal ground here. Isn't this tantamount to punishing teams for refusing to collude?
I'm sure there will be a legal challenge and I'll be interested to see how it turns out, but I'm pretty sure the NFL is going to argue that this is about the way the contracts are structured, not the amount they are for. There was no collusion to curb spending that year, but Dallas and Washington treated it as a loophole to circumvent any future cap.
I think the NFL isn't quite legalized slavery (like the college game) but it certainly takes as much as possible from the product and squeezes out millions without concern for the players past, present, or future...
RG3 can throw, catch, and block for himself this season. Cause the Redskins just are one lost franchise.
vincent jackson can catch just fine for him.
word on the street is the Skins and maybe the Cowboys will sue the NFL if they try to holdthem to numbers that have been given
I made this thread earlier but my choice of words to describe the situation was I guess not approved of thus stripping me of all mgopoints... (Insert Dick Vitale ARE YOU SERIOUS?!) I guess I should have said "Shafted" or "Hosed" instead of what I wrote down...
On topic though... This is a really bad deal for both teams since they essentially broke no written rules.
It is especially bad for the Redskins who were counting on Free Agency to re-build. (Not with old guys this time.) They may not have made the RGIII deal if they knew this was coming down the pike, although some sources say they knew per WJFK in DC.
Maybe my Browns should offer a trade to the Skins for that #2 pick they now cant afford to get any talent around. Let's see.....we'll give them our #4 pick and......maybe a could of 5th rounders.
Enjoy Danny.....enjoy!

have Rexie, right? What else do you need?

They need to make all bonuses count the year they are paid. Why bother having a cap if you are going to allow teams to "loophole" them? The system needs to be streamlined so that agents have less power to pull shenanigans. In the long run, it would help both the owners and the players.
The only people who would be hurt are the agents who take their percentage of signing bonuses off the top but are nowhere to be found when the team sues to get half of it back.

I kind of doubt they'll pay the whole amounts because they more violated the spirit of the uncapped year than anything else, but I do expect some penalty of sorts to be paid. I do think the NFL needs to grow up a bit with all of this "competitive unfairness" crap - this is a multi-billion dollar sport with millionare/billionaire owners. They know what they are doing, and acting like the owners of Dallas and D.C. shouldn't be able to spend their money how they want seems silly.

I was just reading analysis about the Redskins gameplan, which was stockpiling draft picks and changed dramatically because they had cap space and got the #2 pick from the Rams. This again will change everything for them and make Shanahan's job that much more difficult....AGAIN.
