OT -- Potential Buckeye infestation
According to Jeff Masters's weather blog, USDA updated its Plant Hardiness Zones, shifting Ann Arbor 5 degrees from zone 5 to the warmer zone 6. That puts us squarely in the area that the Ohio Buckeye tree thrives. In fact the USDA Forest Service expects an infestation.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Scroll down to February 10th.

*Maize. If we could just get people to wear maize to our Maize-outs, that'd be awesome.

Que se quema? Los arboles se quema, se quema los arboles.
(For the non-barcelonistas, this is derived from a Barcelona chant "Que se quema? Madrid se quema, se quema Madrid!")

Seeing as they will be an invasive species, I see no quarrels with cutting them all down and burning them in effigy.

...can we get some of the folks at the med school to bio-engineer a tree-eating, warm weather tolerant wolverine?
February 17th, 2012 at 4:41 PM ^
Our trees now, let's build a bon fire!
February 17th, 2012 at 4:45 PM ^
So this means we can release hundreds of wolverines in Columbus so they can pillage, correct?
February 17th, 2012 at 5:03 PM ^
Wolverines are more the plundering, not pillaging, type

Where can I donate to the eradication of this invasive, nasty, putrid plague of parasitic treedevils?

the stench.

The fruit of the ohio buckeye tree is also known as the stinking or fetid buckeye. This is compared to the yellow buckeye tree, the fruit of which is known as the sweet buckeye.
So there you go - Ohio Buckeye = stinking or fetid. Yellow = Sweet. Coincidence? I think not.
Hurrah for the Yellow (and Blue)!

I think we might need to consult Harvey Updyke... though we wouldn't stoop to the level of those Alabama fans... would we?

The Buckeye trees have been here for decades.....look down the right side of the 9th fairway from 100 yards in.....

Saw some buckeye fans in town today. Looks like some have decided to arrive early.

unfortunately, i live in ohio. i had 2 buckeye trees in my front yard taken down.
February 17th, 2012 at 6:46 PM ^
No worries, we'll just cut them down and use them to build toilets and other things you can crap in.

"Buckeye" and "infestation" are two words that belong together.
February 17th, 2012 at 8:00 PM ^
I say we embrace it. Plant a couple Buckeye trees on the Quad and TP them when we beat Ohio. Or we burn the damned things down. Whatever.

an affirmative. just like varmit poontang. the only good varmit poontang is dead varmit poontang. the only good buckeye trees are dead buckeye trees.
maybe we can ship the trees down to Texas A&M for their bonfire.

I think we can start a new tradition for the ohio game....the buckeye bonfire
February 18th, 2012 at 1:59 AM ^
That would be a pretty neat tradition to get started, do a pep rally/ bone fire Friday nights before home games.
February 18th, 2012 at 5:43 AM ^
if you have a bone fire, shouldn't you get some penicillin
