WR Recruiting
With Stonum dismissed from the team, is there a chance we lure another 1-2 WRs in the class?
We have a slim chance with Payton at this point - but any dark horse receivers still in the picture for Michigan? Anyone think Diggs might come to Michigan with the lure of early PT?
January 18th, 2012 at 5:07 AM ^
damn it's 5 am. shit. yeah im thinking early PT is enticing now that it's clear there's a need. i wouldn't be surprised if we snatch an extra WR or if a new name pops up at some point. then again, it's not like Denard is TOM BRADY or anything so that might kind of temper the PT lure. here's to hoping we don't need as many jump bals to win games next year as we did this year!
January 18th, 2012 at 8:46 AM ^
Whoever comes now only has Denard for one year so they'll be looking past him to the next QB. It's a chance to play with a Heisman contended for one year, then 5-Star quality passers.

Shane.
January 18th, 2012 at 5:29 AM ^
Diggs and DGB and Thomas Johnson and Agholor.
January 18th, 2012 at 10:11 AM ^
At least we're keeping perspective.
January 18th, 2012 at 5:32 AM ^
In all seriousness they need to grab someone, unless the staff envisions Gant or Clark moving to WR. The passing up of Devin Lucien and Hakeem Flowers last year is becoming increasingly disappointing.
January 18th, 2012 at 6:26 AM ^
Gant is too slow to play wideout.
January 18th, 2012 at 7:11 AM ^
Jeremy Clark, on the other hand, is 6'4" with 4.47 speed according to scout. He also had some big play ability scoring on several special teams and defensive returns.
January 18th, 2012 at 10:49 AM ^
your too slow
January 18th, 2012 at 2:07 PM ^
January 18th, 2012 at 6:48 AM ^
Not two. I don't see them taking or getting two quality wideouts this late in the game. Agree about Lucien and flowers. That sucks
January 18th, 2012 at 7:00 AM ^
the staff told Payton that they want 3. Madaris is on campus this weekend. Hoke is in home with Jordan on Thursday. The extreme back up plan is kenny lawler. He was commited to ASU but when there coach got fired he opened up and reached out to us. No offer was ever given but from what I am hearing there is a lot of mutual interest at this point. by the end of this class, we will have 3 really good WR with atleast one guy that will probably crack the starting rotation next year.
January 18th, 2012 at 7:31 AM ^
Rivals needs to update Kenny Lawler's page.
Kenny Lawler 'reminds us of...' Sam Hurd.
Is it fair to say that recruits should not be compared to criminals? Or are they going to start comparing bruising RBs to OJ Simpson and speedster WRs to Rae Carruth?
January 18th, 2012 at 8:10 AM ^
Hoke is recruiting drug dealers. Grab pitch forks! Fire hoke!!!!!
<br>%s
January 18th, 2012 at 8:10 AM ^
I hope Rivals doesn't compare a running back to Craig James. Afterall, who wants to be compared to someone that killed five hookers!
January 18th, 2012 at 8:17 AM ^
Those poor hookers...
January 18th, 2012 at 9:03 AM ^
allegedly homie. CRAIG JAMES allegedly KILLED FIVE HOOKERS WHILE AT SMU. Urban Meyer's whereabouts at that time is also unaccounted for.
January 18th, 2012 at 10:11 AM ^
No, actually Urban has a pretty clean alibi- he was busy BANGING 5 CO-EDS at the time...
January 18th, 2012 at 10:40 AM ^
"...someone WHO killed five hookers!"
C'mon, let's get our grammar straight. This is Michigan, fergodssakes.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:35 AM ^
Let's be honest - O.J. Simpson did more than "bruise."
January 18th, 2012 at 8:40 AM ^
He's a real slasher, makes very clean cuts.
....Too soon?
January 18th, 2012 at 10:09 AM ^
It will never not be too soon...
January 18th, 2012 at 8:32 AM ^
Lawler was offered months and months ago, before he committed elsewhere.
January 18th, 2012 at 9:07 AM ^
ahh well that was my mistake then. I thought I read somewhere that he didn't have an offer yet but good to hear he has one. thanks magnus.
January 18th, 2012 at 9:23 AM ^
To be a little clearer, he was offered a while ago . . . but that offer may have disappeared when he was committed elsewhere and we still had Standifer. Perhaps Michigan hasn't "re-offered" since that time, but at one point, he did have a committable offer.

Monty is going to MSU this weekend:

he was suppose to come last week but when that didn't happen tom said on a forum that he was intending to head up this week. Now apperently thats not happening either. Another talented kid that was said to be a Michigan ( and FSU) fan growing up that probably won't end up here. I don't get recruiting sometimes. All I will say is that I trust the coaches, and we have damn good ones too.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:16 AM ^
about all of the DL / OL / LB (pre-recruiting 2012 monster class) depth problems.....so I just assumed we had just been recruiting a bunch of skill position players....now I go to find out we don't have any suitable replacements for Stonum.....WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY DOING ON THE RECRUITING TRAIL FOR 3 YEARS?!??!!? Yes....yes I know they got Denard...and yes...I know that Rivals rated our classes pretty highly during those RR years....but what was going on there? Either NOBODY has developed, or there were some serious issues with allocating spots to positions leaving out most of the important ones.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:29 AM ^
Its not they weren't recruiting but it boils down to two words:
Slot Ninjas
January 18th, 2012 at 8:32 AM ^
Just go through the old commit lists and see how many kids are still with the program. There's the problem.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:40 AM ^
We recruited lots of guys, but the retention was poor. Feagin? Gone. Conelius Jones? Gone. Je'Ron Stokes? Gone. D.J. Williamson? Gone. Stonum? Gone. Teric Jones? Gone. That's two 4-star guys (Stokes, Stonum) and four 3-star guys who could have been playing WR for us who are now elsewhere or out of football altogether. And a few of those slot receivers are still on the roster, but they're not really options at outside receiver, like Drew Dileo, Terrence Robinson, etc.
January 18th, 2012 at 1:04 PM ^
Don't forget about Devin Lucien from last year... a 4 star WR that was close to committing to RR and Hoke tried to re-offer as a CB. I hope Hoke's regretting it now, as we all were back then...
January 18th, 2012 at 8:31 AM ^
Everybody go back and watch the Amarah Darboh highlight tape and you'll feel better.
January 18th, 2012 at 1:57 PM ^
Thanks. I needed that.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:40 AM ^
Why did DJ Williamson and Je'Ron Stokes have to leave? Dammit.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:41 AM ^
Almost everyone thought Stokes would be good...
...but my question on Williamson is "Why did he have to get offered in the first place?" I still don't understand that one.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:52 AM ^
I blame Shawn Conway...and the dude who was dropping racist remarks in his committment thread. (not really, but your mention of Williamson reminded of the Conway saga for whatever reason).
January 18th, 2012 at 8:57 AM ^
Yeah. Do you have any insight as to why Stokes left? He looked decent in the spring game...I thought he could develop into something.
January 18th, 2012 at 9:04 AM ^
I don't really have any scuttlebutt on why Stokes left. I always assumed it was because he was going to be buried on the depth chart, but maybe I'm wrong. I was never that impressed with him on the field, and his catch in the spring game was the highlight of his career...so maybe that was the best move for him.
January 18th, 2012 at 9:26 AM ^
TomVH tweeted that Madaris is going to MSU this weekend, not to us. Color me confused.
January 18th, 2012 at 9:38 AM ^
has also been reporting that Madaris is visiting MSU and, per his coach, is expected to make a final decision this weekend from a list of schools that "includes Michigan State and Cincinnati."
http://cincinnati.com/blogs/recruiting/2012/01/18/moeller-wr-monty-mada…
January 18th, 2012 at 1:05 PM ^
Some list...only two schools. They should have called it a sticky note.
January 18th, 2012 at 1:29 PM ^
I assume he's pared that down some. And "includes" doesn't imply there aren't others, although I'm guessing his coach has an idea where he's leaning.
I hope it's Cincinnati--I think their offense is a good fit for him.
January 18th, 2012 at 9:29 AM ^
Moved back to wide receiver than sit on the bench behind several underclassmen at linebacker.
He has the size and experience at receiver. He can't be slower than Junior H.

January 18th, 2012 at 10:15 AM ^
The need at TE is dire. The need at WR is just so-so. I think Funchess will stay at TE, although we could use him in the slot. But I wouldn't expect him to play WR full-time.
January 18th, 2012 at 1:16 PM ^
Well, if we get Sam Grant, then we can use Funchess in the hybrid TE/WR role that the Patriots have used Aaron Hernandez at.
January 18th, 2012 at 11:09 AM ^
I hope not. We're almost as thin at TE as we are at WR.
