Actually it's interesting even if it's total bullshit.
September 16th, 2011 at 11:19 PM ^
makes complete sense from a money making stand point. good luck to both schools. HELLO: wvu
September 16th, 2011 at 11:20 PM ^
Honestly, I think this means that BE AD's believe that WVU is in talks with the SEC. Pitt isn't about to bail an even slightly viable BE for the ACC, in my opinion.
September 16th, 2011 at 11:21 PM ^
The ACC is going to be awesome...in basketball.
September 16th, 2011 at 11:24 PM ^
I heard UT and ND to ACC also this week. Its interesting to me that this is even a possibility, since its been a long-standing gripe of UNC coaches, that even in winning seasons, Kenan Memorial is never sold out, not even close. The bottom line in the ACC is football is the red-headed step child of the media and fans. People love basketball here. FSU and the U were supposed to bolster ACC football but they have been down ever since they entered the conference. As someone else said, its great for basketball, that's it. Oh and I call bullshit.
September 17th, 2011 at 12:20 AM ^
FSU has won two national titles since joining the ACC, and ruled over the conference like it was a private fiefdom for a decade. Were you thinking of VT?
September 17th, 2011 at 10:41 AM ^
I think he means Da U.
September 16th, 2011 at 11:24 PM ^
I know this is all about football so basketball has no bearing on these changes but it would be very interesting if this happend. ACC (which is argueble the best conference out there) would get to really good teams that are traditional good (Syracuse more than Pitt) and the Big East would lose two of their better teams and the over-inflated balloon which is that conference in bball would shrink too.
September 16th, 2011 at 11:28 PM ^
This is anectdotal, but I have heard several times that even without selling out, UNC generates more revenue from one football game than they do from their entire home basketball schedule. I'm sure this doesn't include all the merch sales from BBall, but its telling in and of iteself.
September 16th, 2011 at 11:34 PM ^
Kenan: 62,980*$50=3,149,000
Smith 21,750*36.47^=793,222
^This is their 17 game ticket package, not including the stronger conference teams, so this might be off.
September 16th, 2011 at 11:43 PM ^
Parking is generally free at the basketball games. I have never paid in 20+ events. I have paid $20 every time I've been to Kenan. Basketball concessions are usually one soda and a hot dog. Football games are at least double that. Like I said, it was anectdotal and from the mileau of UNC alums I find myself among on a daily basis.
September 16th, 2011 at 11:46 PM ^
I wasn't trying to say it was one way or the other. Just took a look at ticket sales and what they did. Honestly, unless you can see inside the ACC TV contract and figure out how much is football and how much is basketball, nobody could know. TV brings in way more money than parking, tickets, concessions and everything else. With TV dollars counted, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that you're spot on.
September 17th, 2011 at 12:26 AM ^
Looking at your numbers I would think TV revenue is significantly less than the aggregate of ticket sales, concessions, parking. ACC schools get $11.9M each for basketball and football combined. While the breakdown isn't known, their previous separate contracts were fairly close to 50-50. Football was a little higher, but the basketball contract was signed a few years earlier. I know numerous people have stated that almost all the money is in football and basketball is inconsequential in expansion talk. That simply isn't true, at least in regards to the ACC and Big East.
September 16th, 2011 at 11:36 PM ^
That doesn't really surprise me too much. College football is such a big business now-a-days that this seems very plausible. It's kind of sad though. I'm only 19 and I feel like this game I grew up loving that was small-ish and personal is turning into a large, face-less coperate money grab (cough*Pro Combat uni's*Cough). I can't even imagine what those who grew up with one game a year being televised feel about all of this.
September 16th, 2011 at 11:26 PM ^
And I wonder if the "left behind" from each conference get together, like the WCHA-CCHA did.
Also, I hope the B1G sits this one out. Twelve teams is enough for me
September 16th, 2011 at 11:28 PM ^
That'd be sweet from a basketball perspective. As a Duke fan, I'd welcome this. I doubt it's gonna happen though.
September 17th, 2011 at 12:00 AM ^
One thing is for sure, the ACC tourney would be sweet.
Edit: And since I shamelessly double posted below, I'll add some more detail here about the ACC tourney here in RTP. In several of my clients offices this year, nothing gets done during that week. Conference rooms are booked with tvs during the daytime matches so people can watch the tournament. Everyone leaves early. Its like some religious holiday that I'm not a part of.
September 16th, 2011 at 11:33 PM ^
Recockulous double post.
September 16th, 2011 at 11:32 PM ^
This stuff is so out of control. Anyone else not that excited about having 3 super conferences?
September 16th, 2011 at 11:37 PM ^
September 16th, 2011 at 11:52 PM ^
The ACC has something in common with the B1G, they care about academics.
September 16th, 2011 at 11:58 PM ^
But it seems like they'd make sense for the SEC
September 17th, 2011 at 12:05 AM ^
September 17th, 2011 at 10:44 AM ^
Sure, South Florida in the ACC. And maybe the B1G could invite Cincinnati and Toledo.
NOT.
September 17th, 2011 at 12:23 AM ^
Could this mean that the ACC is nervous about defections (FSU, VT, and Clemson being the most likely)?
September 17th, 2011 at 12:28 AM ^
Also, I believe Virginia and Virginial Tech. are a package deal....kind of like Oklahoma and Oklahoma St.
September 17th, 2011 at 12:31 AM ^
They don't want to lose their conference championship game and FSU is supposedly looking around.
September 17th, 2011 at 12:47 AM ^
Looking "around" or looking at the SEC? Where else would they go if they were going to leave the ACC? The Pac-12?
September 17th, 2011 at 1:32 AM ^
Of course they're saying to the SEC, "Look at us", without mentioning their name. If they don't come calling, FSU will issue a statement about how the ACC is the perfect fit for them.

September 17th, 2011 at 12:33 AM ^
but Pitt would be one of my top choices if they did.
September 17th, 2011 at 1:13 AM ^
I seem to recall during the last round of realignment someone at Notre Dame said they wouldn't consider joining a football conference unless the Big East had a major change or collapse. It'd be interesting to see what happens with them, I still like the idea of them in the Big Ten if we weren't already such a large conference.
September 17th, 2011 at 6:17 AM ^
I am waiting for the day when there is simply "The Conference".
September 17th, 2011 at 7:20 AM ^
my hopes up for a Cuse + (ND, Rutgers, or Pitt) to B1G down the line, but sounds unlikely at this point.
September 17th, 2011 at 10:38 AM ^
ND to the ACC would hurt...
September 17th, 2011 at 10:46 AM ^
I don't want to see the ACC expand beyond 12 if it doesn't have to, but Cuse and Pitt would be two of my top three choices if we do. So so so so much better than Texas.
