2024 Spring Game Instant Takes Comment Count

Alex.Drain April 20th, 2024 at 3:26 PM

Team Maize defeated Team Blue by a score of 17-7 at today's 2024 edition of the Michigan Football spring game. A game that was preceded by the championship ring ceremony and had numerous departed heroes strolling the sideline, the focus on the field was instead on a number of young players trying to make a name for themselves. As in past years, I'm not going to give a play-by-play recap for an exhibition game, but instead will give you a batch of instant reaction takes on what we witnessed:

Offense

Alex Orji's potential... and areas for improvement. Orji quarterbacked the first drive for Team Blue, as well as the last, with  intermittent snaps in between. In that time we saw some good and some bad from Orji. He varied his touch on throws that showed a decent understanding of quarterbacking, but was mostly throwing checkdown passes. The final drive in particular saw the defense back off (Team Maize had a 10 point lead), ceding the underneath routes and Orji was efficient in connecting on those. But that's what you'd expect any QB at this level to be able to do, so I'm not putting much stock in that.

However, there were more tantalizing moments. Orji delivered a pass to Max Bredeson with good zip and then sensed pressure before scrambling for a touchdown on the first drive. He also seemed to have another touchdown scramble on the last drive, but it was overturned on a questionable "sack" (the referees blew the play dead in rather dubious fashion). The athleticism and the ability to hit the easy stuff was on display but there were concerning moments. He put a ball behind Tyler Morris on the first drive and forced a laser into double coverage looking for Zack Marshall on the last drive. Orji also showed good pocket presence on a different snap a couple drives earlier, dancing in the pocket and eventually finding an open receiver on 3rd & 5... but he way overthrew his target. I'm not sure if the accuracy and reads are completely where they need to be, but Orji wasn't a total wreck and gave us enough reasons to believe he could plausibly be the QB in 2024. It didn't answer all the questions at the QB position, but there was enough on display to believe Orji could be a successful QB at some point in the future (whether that is in '24 or '25).

Takes on the other QBs. Davis Warren was the starting QB for Team Maize and just like prior seasons, Warren looked pretty damn good. His arm talent is 100% there, which was most on display on a bomb to Kendrick Bell for a TD:

There were several other strikes that Warren uncorked and he may well have been the most impressive QB today. However, it does feel a little difficult to take all of it seriously because Warren has looked terrific in spring games prior too, which hasn't necessarily translated to regulation games.

Jayden Denegal was a bit of a disappointment in this one I felt. His drives for Team Maize had some moments, but ultimately left a lot to be desired. Yes he did hit a bomb to Fred Moore, but he also threw a wretched interception to DJ Waller (which was punched out and recovered as a fumble), threw a ball that was batted at the line, fumbled a snap that killed the two minute drill in the second quarter, and had a couple other iffy looking throws on the fourth drive. Based on the feel of this game, it would appear that Orji and Warren are the main two in-house contenders for the starting QB this fall.

Jadyn Davis didn't play a ton, as expected. He threw a nice ball down the sideline for Peyton O'Leary that was PBU'd which showed off his arm talent, but he did appear to miss a wide open receiver on that very play. That was Davis' most notable moment during a short afternoon and based on today I would expect him to redshirt this fall (nothin' wrong with that).

[AFTER THE JUMP: more takes]

[Patrick Barron]

Donovan Edwards looking good! I thought one of the best sights in this spring game was Donovan Edwards' sharp effort. He played early on in this game and from an eye test standpoint looked as good as he did at any point last season. Edwards was making good cuts, breaking tackles, showing his speed. After a frustrating junior season (until the National Championship Game), it looks like Edwards is on the right track here in spring and that's nice to see.

Receiver/TE highlights. Kendrick Bell had the TD that I already clipped a few points above, amid several catches in this game. Fred Moore was the most impactful receiver, hauling in a long catch-and-run TD from Davis Warren that showed off his speed and open field ability:

Tyler Morris and Semaj Morgan both played some early on, mostly receiving short stuff. Perennial spring game hero Peyton O'Leary had some moments as well, but we've come to expect that. The tight ends did indeed show some Marlin Klein, but I was most intrigued to see a lot of Zack Marshall (he had a bunch of targets) and a little of Deakon Tonielli and Hogan Hansen. It was a bit tough to asses how far along the young TEs are on first watch but they were not short on playing time today. Marshall getting a lot of action today perhaps is a good indicator for his spot on the depth chart.

Don't ask me for OL takes. As always with the spring game, the OL is very hard to evaluate in real time. That'll be a job for Brian and Seth this week when they dig through the tape.

Defense

Both CB2 candidates had moments. One of the main areas of focus coming into this spring game was the CB2 battle between Jyaire Hill and DJ Waller. I thought both looked pretty solid, with Waller having the aforementioned interception, not to mention a couple tackles in space on screens and helping out in the run game (he was credited with a 4th & 2 stop). Hill had a PBU and was also involved in the run defense. Both guys showed up in my notes a few times and mostly for good things. That's all a good sign and a notable departure from last season's spring game, when the hyped CB2 option (Amorion Walker) was given extensive problems by a walk-on receiver.

TJ Guy sack! Mentioned in my spring game preview, EDGE TJ Guy has been a major talking point in the spring buzz, so it was nice to see him get a sack in this game. I am 90% sure it came against true freshman tackle Blake Frazier, so probably not the most meaningful indicator, but that's what a player in line for playing time needs to be doing against an inexperienced tackle. I also had him down for a run stuff on 3rd & 4, so Guy was active in both phases of the game. While we're dealing with a sack bullet point, we should note that Kechaun Bennett was also credited for a sack. We've seldom heard about Bennett in his time at Michigan, so it's always nice to see something from him.

An assortment of young guys who had their names called. Zeke Berry had some solid moments in the run game that I put in my notes and was credited for the "sack" on the play where Denegal fumbled the snap. Didn't see a ton from him in coverage live, but again there's a lot going on during each individual play. Ja'Den McBurrows had a great tackle and there was a pressure for Team Blue that I credited to a duo of LB Jimmy Rolder and EDGE/OLB Breeon Ishmail. That play may have been the first time that Ishmail's name has shown up in any practice notes, regulation or spring game action since the Ohioan joined the Wolverines in the 2023 recruiting class. Rolder also had a pressure that forced a sack one play later, which drew a penalty on tackle Evan Link.

Ike Iwunnah batted a pass from Denegal at the line that appeared to be intercepted by EDGE Aymeric Koumba, but upon further review the ball bounced off the turf. True freshman EDGE Dominic Nichols popped on a 3rd down run stuff and also showed up in my notes on another play later on in the game. Another true freshman, LB Cole Sullivan, helped Jyaire Hill make a stop on 4th & 1 on the penultimate Team Blue drive to help secure the win for Team Maize. I'm not sure what, if anything, any of these plays mean, but it never hurts to get positively credited for a play in the spring game.

Special Teams

Adam Samaha missed a field goal. Not much to report on here, but Adam Samaha went 1/2 on his field goal attempts. He made a 31 yarder (tucked it inside the upright) but missed a 30 yarder. Not ideal. Panic if you want.

Where are you getting sub-50% completion percentage for Milroe in high school?  The Texas commentor on here wrote he was a 65% passer at Katy playing a dozen D1 defensive back recruits while Orji was the one at 50%?   Don't think ON3 has ever had a 5 star high school QB that threw less than 50%.

Agree on Warren as QB1 and Tuttle a close second. The latter would likely hold the position if he stayed healthy this full year. He seems to hold the edge in everyday leadership amongst all the QBs.

Warren has an excellent arm and good wheels. He can make the offense go. Ideally he would add 15 lbs to absorb the blows and run with a bit more force, but that is unlikely at this point and we have a poor man’s JJ. He can do enough with broken plays and distribute the ball to move the chains. Everyday leadership is a complete unknown, so in Campbell we trust.

Having attended in person, here are my takes

  • Orji is serviceable as a thrower
  • We have a bunch of good RB options behind Donovan
  • Fred Moore may have shown us why some other WRs are transferring for playing time.

DJ Waller is a physical specimen

Orji needs another year of technical refinement. There’s definitely proof of concept for a future first rounder, but we’ll break him (like Gardner) if we force him in as the FT starter this year.

Best case scenario, we’ll be able to use the portal to reinforce strengths (DL, DB, and maybe even OL) and then win with one of the Davis’ at QB.

I think we can settle for a Tuttle @ QB, and/or take our chances with Orji and Warren. Basically no one is happy looking at the QB room right now, but with our defense & coaching we'll be able to put together a semblance of a winning offense. And honestly, I'm happy to not bring in a multi-year starter at QB since we have Jaydn Davis & then Carter Smith coming in behind him. Rather give snaps to guys on the roster, also in terms of development for next season.

Cancel all that out if we're somehow able to bring in 2 starting WR's thru the transfer portal - then I'd like to see us push for another portal QB since the starting defense is capable of making a push for the title.

I don’t mean to be alarmist here, but how in the world do we only have 3 commits for the 2025 recruiting class?  We are currently ranked #56!  Oh, by the way, OSU is #1 with 13 commits including 3 five star recruits.

We just won a National Title (which I greatly enjoyed and appreciated!), so shouldn’t we be doing better than that?  I get we had mass turnover in the Coaching staff, but how is this possible?  I’m concerned because I care.  Let’s hope Coach Moore has a plan in place.  I love this team and don’t want to see what Coach Harbaugh built fall off a cliff.

To be completely fair to Sherrone, Harbaugh is the man who careened the program towards the cliff. He pretty much put all his eggs in the basket of these last two teams, with the 2022 class being the last hurrah. You could’ve fielded one more CFP favorite this year by retaining the early departees who DID leave, but it’s been pretty clear for a while that we weren’t set up to thrive beyond the upcoming season.

We had a coaching change, could have been smoother but idk not worried about it.  Recruiting will catch up im sure.  Im also sure some of those ohio recruits will recommit.  Things tend to even out in recruiting, a huge early lead in recruiting doesn't mean much.

tough to asses

Wonderful typo. I was pondering this exact thing recently because of swipe typing on my phone. Although "tough to asses" sounds like a colloquialism like "dollars to donuts".

Orji is a plus athlete that is going to put defenses in a bind trying to contain him. Unfortunately, he throws with a low arm slot like a baseball catcher. This is going to result in more blocked passes and flat trajectory throws that are more prone to being intercepted, both across the middle and as overthrows. Since there will be more QB runs, something many of us have clamored for, he will also be more likely to get dinged up. This will require some depth at the position. Best comparisonn is a slower version of Denard with added power. Probably more suited for a Rich Rod style offense, but we'll see. I also suspect Orji will not be the best option if we fall behind or end up in a shoot out game, so our defense and running game need to be dominant. At this point in his development, he is ready to start, but perhaps not lead a team to glory. Warren has shown he is talented enough in spring games. Needs to play well in a meaningful game for a better evaluation. Denegal isn't ready, nor is Davis. Tuttle has been unable to stay healthy. This is the #1 issue going into the season by far.

If this team resembles more of the 1997 champ team than the 2023 champ team, I'll take it.

QB (like Griese) who does a good job managing the game.  Excellent run game, and perhaps the best D in the nation.  That's not just a playoff team, that's a deep-run playoff team.

Seems to me the key for a QB is the ability to pass the ball to keep the defense honest.  With our RBs, we will run the ball effectively if only opposing defenses have to fear the pass.  Accordingly, whichever QB is the better passer is the guy we need.

Don't be surprised if Warren wins job. He battled injuries last year and didn't travel for numerous road games. He has a strong arm and can run but we all know the QB job is up for grabs.

I agree that Warren has done this before in the spring game but his rep was JJ-lite, so if he can reach that level (and there was talk he was nursing an injury last year, I believe, so that probably hurt him a bit) then that's a positive development.  I'm not sold this isn't just spring ball legend material but I just don't think Orji is quite there yet and so a Warren/Orji/Tuttle competition that's actually got options would be nice.

I thought the receivers looked fine but they don't have a Wilson type who can just burn defenders, and so we'll see how they handle that schematically.

RBs looked good, but that's not a huge surprise.

Defenses are always hard to read in games like this but, yeah, CB2 not being roasted by a walk-on is a big positive.

Orji was very unimpressive. First 2 passes terrible next 2 perfect. But we can't win with 2 out of 4. The last few completions were against the prevent defense.

Quarterback concerns me the most.

I was thinking Texas was the 2024 season opener, but we actually have Fresno State the weekend before.  I think we'll probably see QB 1a get the 1st half of that game and QB 1b get the 2nd half.  Hopefully we'll have the right guy for hosting the Longhorns (and treating Sark's team very inhospitably).  Arkansas State comes in the week after Texas, right before hosting USC, so that presents another option to move some pieces around.  Even with the difficult nu skool B1G schedule, starting off with 5 straight home games will be helpful for this team to gain experience and find their footing.

Watching the highlights, and Orji made those easy throws look easy. Not sure why everyone is so hard on him on the comments - he's going to be a good player with some more experience.

Also, impressed by the younger Bell - he caught the deep ball & also made 2 blocks on that Fred Moore long TD run. Also Marlin Klein is going to be a beast playing with Loveland.

If both Moore and Bell had passed Clemons and English, their transfers make a lot more sense. While our depth is perilously thin, if you’re 5 and 6 on the Michigan depth chart, you’re getting maybe 5 targets over the course of the season and everyone above you still has multiple years of eligibility left.

I’d love a tall grad transfer to round out this group for this year but I see a lot of potential for this WR room down the road.

It's hard to come in right away in your first big game opportunity & be on point. So obviously he needed a couple throws to settle himself down.

Look at everyone getting down on Denegal. He came into the game to basically run the 2 minute drill before halftime as the 4th QB. He was put in a tough spot to begin with, may have influenced how he played the rest of the game?

Bottom line, there's talent in the current QB room. I'm okay with whoever wins out & starts week 1 in our current roster.

Dono def looked better in the few times he ran. Looked more explosive! Fred Moore has the "it" look. Gives off a vibe of a game breaker! Hopefully it carries into the season.

I think people need to pump the brakes on Warren on a bit. He had two great throws: one was a wide open bomb where Bell just ran passed a walk on on a go route. The second, he scrambled around and found Moore wide open, who then ran away from a bunch of back ups.

Orji’s play reminded me a lot of Milroe for Alabama last season. Short crossing routes and check downs, escapability from the the pocket and hard running style. His passing on those routes should get better (throwing more in front of receivers) as he reps with them. If this is what can be expected from him this season with very little downfield passing, then Michigan will be ok and competitive in every game.

Warren looked good throwing the ball, but the question is how will he do when there is a real defender in his face and he will actually be hit.

Denegal doesn’t seem ready yet.

Davis reminds me of a freshman JJ. Will Coach Moore use him as a change up like Michigan used JJ that season? I believe he can throw it downfield with ease and his mobility will be a plus as well. If he can replicate a freshman JJ type season I’d certainly be ok with a burned redshirt.

The defense is going to be ferocious again as many of the two and three deep looked very playable.

My take is poor damn Sherrone Moore has had a ton to deal with the past few months, from being named HC to rebuilding half of a coaching staff to NCAA penalties to OWIs.  Now with real football stuff he has his work cut out in developing his QB room and then planning an offense around not JJ.

Sherrone is earning every penny of his salary.
