Sorry if your relatives suffered at the hands of the British but your schadenfreude and vengeful attitude are emblematic of all that is wrong in the world today.

Then what he is really saying is that he really wants to make the tournament into more of a made-for-TV exhibition, which is what the football playoff is going to become instead of a bona fide playoff to crown the best team as champs. Unlike football where the mid majors are rarely truly credible candidates to be the best team, plenty of mid major basketball programs can hang with the teams from supposed power conferences.

I agree. There is something…

I agree. There is something sentimental to the winning of a title that only belongs to the people part of the team and organization that accomplished the feat.  For instance, I don’t understand why someone that had no part in contributing to a Super Bowl victory would want a Super Bowl ring, no matter how cool it looks. That person is just a poseur.

No. Teams play to win the…

No. Teams play to win the national championship. That’s why most of our upperclassmen came back. The national championship is the motivator. I have never heard anyone in sports with a legitimate chance to win the top prize say it is more important to win a rivalry matchup. The rivalry matters not just because you want to beat your rival but because winning holds the key to doing bigger and better things. And who cares about rivalries when the teams are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. If that were so the whole country should tune into Harvard-Yale every year. The only game where this is not the case is Army-Navy because it symbolizes something that transcends college football and petty local rivalries on a national emotional level.

All of this is true, but in…

All of this is true, but in theory the players are also amateurs and enrolled students while the coaches are and always have been acknowledged as professional coaches. If something isn’t done to put some guardrails around contractual obligations that players must fulfill to their program/university then college football will become a completely professional game and will lose a lot of the interest from the traditional fan base. My interest is quickly fading as the game becomes filled with mercenaries. If neither coaches nor players give a damn about the places that they supposedly represent, then why should the fans?

Michigan went undefeated and…

Michigan went undefeated and beat other teams that had zero or one loss. That is not how this will turn out when teams sneak in with three losses because x conference was “tough” this year. When you add more games you add more variables that come down to luck over skill, like untimely injuries. This will impact outcomes and almost certainly result in an underwhelming and undeserving champion at some point.

^This. Hence why it will no…

^This. Hence why it will no longer credibly be a national championship but more of an exhibition tournament championship comprised of major brand name programs that the players will eventually decide to sit out of, just like they do at today’s bowl games. P-Titti Ana his minions are once again too clever by half.

Six is ideal but eight could…

Amen.

Six is ideal but eight could be defensible. Twelve or sixteen is too many to be crown the winner anything but a tournament champ because it disregards the total body of work over a season. The BCS and four team playoff at least preserved that even though there were almost always questions over the last team to be chosen. Usually a case could be made for the number five and six ranked teams as their resumes were close. But once you got beyond the top six it was obvious that those teams didn’t deserve to be in the conversation as national title contenders. This is just a money grab that further professionalizes the game and eats away at the charm that makes college different from the NFL.

I’ve said as much as well…

I’ve said as much as well. We have the forever satisfaction of having won the last true college football national championship when things still look like college football with an emphasis of only the best teams being in the playoffs and at least a vague connection to the illusion of the amateur student-athlete ideal. Going forward what we will get will be a NFL-style tournament that dilutes the value of the regular season and includes teams that may get hit at the right time and win the tournament but not necessarily truly deserve to call itself national champ based on the total body of the season’s work. Could easily see a 2007 style ending where the college equivalent of the 10-6 Giants gets hot and lucky and beats an undefeated Pats type team. Sixteen teams is too many. Heck, twelve is too many to maintain the integrity of what a national championship should require. Eight, or better still, six should be the number of participants. But it’s all about the Benjamins. Worse still, P-Titti is leading the charge for sixteen teams.

Which finally evens up the…

Which finally evens up the score. Northern teams always play on Southern teams‘ turf with the advantages of traveling fanbases and weather. Now, we get to see how the SEC deals wirh circumstances that are not always to their advantage.

True, but think about the…

True, but think about the circumstances of those "disputed" titles. They almost always came from either the pre-BCS or BCS era. Deciding on the top two teams  is more art than science and as per this year it’s often very close between the top six teams. But rarely do you get beyond the top eight and conclude that one of those teams might be the best team in the land. If they were truly merited they‘d already be in the top eight or so because most of the time the teams in the top eight have no more than two losses and even then you can tell that one or both of the two stragglers are clearly inferior, either because the teams ahead of them have beaten them or by eye test. I grant you that there it can often be close between teams four, five, and six. But generally once you go beyond that it’s pretty clear that other teams are just a notch down in level. I’m all for expansion. I just think that six or eight make sense than twelve because by the time you get to teams nine through twelve there is usually a pretty obvious flaw or two and letting them into a national championship tournament dilutes what better teams have accomplished and rewards the merely good teams.

We can feel good about our…

We can feel good about our national championship. It is the last true national championship decided by the actual best teams. This is really a tournament championship like basketball, meaning that it is basically a second season and the key will be peaking at the right time. Doesn’t mean that it isn’t a valid title if we win the tournament, but it’s just not as special as only having a chance to get in if you have no more than one loss.  More often than not you expect the best teams to win but there will definitely be occasions when a borderline "Cinderella" gets in with a 9-3 or 10-2 record, wins it all based on streak play or a fluke, and it has us all questioning whether the team that won should really be considered the national champs.

Right on. Something,…

Right on. No one should excuse it or validate it but we are probably the last fanbase that should be high-and-mighty.

True, but in a way you could…

True, but in a way you could interpret that depreciation as accrued anticipated future capital expenditure/facility upkeep and maintenance charges. The only difference is in the timing of the cash flows and the net present value of those charges. Let’s hope that the actual cash is well invested so that $4 million of accrued surplus translates to more actual value than the reported number so we can earmark more dry powder for the future.

Careful, that charge could…

Careful, that charge could be levied at all Power 5 schools now, including Michigan. With the influx of money, non-stop coaching departures, transfers, and lack of alignment in emphasis placed on the other elements of the college experience it’s really difficult to assess any athletic department as being anything more than professional sports franchises and sometime marketing agency for the schools. We should all get off our high horse even if the cooler poopers in Columbus have somehow found a way to sink even lower into the depths of hypocrisy.

I agree based on how the…

I agree based on how the offseason had transpired.  We have no reason to gloat and may reap our karmic rewards the next time we meet the Buckeyes. Seems more like we just crossed the finish line and the wheels immediately fell off. Certainly glad to have had the national championship season but we have not parlayed that run of success into anything resembling a momentum builder. This is no time to emulate Ryan Day and company and hold fast to arrogance,

Hate to say this but I think…

Hate to say this but I think it is becoming apparent now that Jim does a lot of things out of spite and because he doesn’t like authority. Maybe that’s why Warde had a problem with him.

Just read the tea leaves. He leaves the the 49ers after disagreements with Baalke and York. Not sure he ever wanted to leave the NFL and probably stayed in college longer than he ever wanted to. The pattern continues in college with all of the issues he has had since.

I‘m okay with it because that’s what innovators and driven people do. They don’t color within the lines. That’s how we got a national championship.

However, we are now seeing the downsides of this. I wouldn’t doubt that Jim feels that he is doing what’s best for his current team and believes that Sherrone is talented enough to make his own imprint on the program.  But it is coming at a tremendous short-term cost and really was done in an underhanded way. I now understand why Jim rubs many of his bosses the wrong way.

Im still happy. We are national champs and no great accomplishment comes without some sacrifices.

If we have to a rebuild, so be it. Just need to make sure to have patience with Sherrone. He thought he was getting the keys to a Ferrari. He is finding out how expensive it is to maintain a finely tuned machine.

Wait a minute, you mean you…

Wait a minute, you mean you are supposed to stick those up your butt? Now that explains why they weren’t working!  —Fake Warde

Might be a quid pro quo so…

Might be a quid pro quo so whereby the CFP committee got the benefit of Warde’s services in exchange for Michigan not being stripped of the national championship.

If so, it was a brilliant chess move by Michigan convincing the other CFP committee members that they are getting a genius visionary chairman to run the playoff in exchange for nothing more than agreeing not to punish Michigan. Perfect for Warde too as he gets to show off his core competency of saying as little as possible to justify the actions of the committee.

Brings to mind the quote from the Austro-Hungarian diplomat Konstantin Josef Jireček, but in a reworked form suitable for Warde:

"We, the unknowing, led by the unwilling, are not doing the possible for the grateful. We have done so little, for so long, with so much, we are now qualified to do nothing with everything"

—Warde Manuel’s AI avatar 😂

Two words: succession…

Two words: succession planning.

I mentioned this before and I am glad that MaizeBlueA2 corroborated it from an AD’s perspective. At Warde’s level you should always have a business continuity plan in place, which in this case means having hiring contingency plans for attrition events. Especially when your head football coach has been interviewing the last three offseasons. That should be a clue.

With all of that said, I have never believed that you can fire your way to success. Everywhere that I have been that approach has backfired, killed morale, and made it much harder to attract and retain talent. I just don’t know if Warde can right the ship. He seems like a good person with a genuine commitment to upholding the values that Michigan stands for.  And I think the NIL problems are more of an indictment of the NCAA and the culture of college football than of Warde. But the coaching retention and succession mayhem is largely on him.

Look, I don’t think Warde…

Look, I don’t think Warde has done a terribly great job in the optics or communication departments but to say that he was unsuccessful at UConn is just not true. During his three year tenure UConn won 6 national championships, which I believe makes him one of the most successful of UConn’s ADs. Of course you can argue that Warde didn’t have to do much since  most of those were basketball titles, but they cleaned up under his watch and if he is gonna take blame when things don’t work out he also gets to take credit when they do. Fact is, I know nothing about how he runs the AD and neither does anyone else here.  The worst that I can say is that he does not inspire confidence in me and seems to play everything too close to the vest.  But that could be because he it ia out of his control and he is on a very short leash. He may be merely following the directives of the administration or the regents and would like to appear more engaged but cannot for fear of ruffling feathers. Or he really could be oblivious to how his leadership is publicly perceived. We just don’t know. But apparently someone must have confidence in him because he is still here…at least for now.

None. Santa is the President…

None. Santa is the President of the university which encompasses things of importance far in excess of the athletic department.
