This game was the season in…

This game was the season in a nutshell: finding a way to lose.

8 point lead, and...Hunter misses a layup.  Nova scores three the other way.  M turnover, compounded by a foul, giving 2 free points without the clock running.  Turnover. Score.  Turnover. Score.  Now down by 1, still a chance to win it.  The shot clanks off the rim, the tip does not go.  M loses by 1.  Finding a way to lose.

JH will just put an extra…

JH will just put an extra tight end on the field.  Probably was going to do this anyway.

A healthy Mike Morris will…

A healthy Mike Morris will make TCU's job even tougher.  They bounce runs because they aren't very good at running up the middle, and he is effective at setting the edge.  The don't pass protect well, and he is M's sack leader.

We'll find out if their…

We'll find out if their gaudy offensive stats are real, or mainly a function of playing against Big 12 defenses.  If they can't run between the tackles, and have issues with pass protection, it's hard to see how they put up a lot of points against a really good M defense.

The section where I don't…

The section where I don't predict the same thing KenPom does:  Michigan by more than 7

On the second drive it was…

On the second drive it was Edwards that got stuffed on 3rd and 4, not Corum.  Edwards looked like he had the first down, tried to bounce it for a home run, and went two yards backwards instead of gaining the first down.  Then the punt was blocked for a TD.  If Edwards had made the proper decision, the punt never would have happened.  It was a 'little thing' but a hugely costly mistake as it turned out.

Bombs away!  Have you seen…

Bombs away!  Have you seen the Sparty secondary?  This is the game that JJ passes 30 times for 300+ yards.

Never heard of Davis Warren…

Never heard of Davis Warren until just now.  What is his unique story?

Meanwhile, Tschetter was…

Meanwhile, Tschetter was reputed to have a sweet outside stroke, and he barely got on the court.

One thing I noticed about…

One thing I noticed about Diabate, in contrast to his generally elite athleticism...weak hands.  Is there any way to work on this, or is it just something he is basically stuck with?  If he is regularly getting the ball stripped in the lane in college, how can he be a post-up threat in the pros?

So all we have to do is stop…

So all we have to do is stop them from hitting 3s?  I mean, they don't run much, they don't post up, except sometimes the guards, they don't really get to the hoop.

Why not put either Frankie or a big guy on Gillespie--cut the head off the snake, with either pressure or length?  Crazy thought, could Moussa check him, make him shoot over a 6'11 guy?  Then we just need to take care of the ball, pound it inside, make a respectable amount of shots.

Never again do I want to see…

Never again do I want to see Johns pump-fake on an open shot from the three point line,,,

We have a chance if we can…

We have a chance if we can just eliminate that patented play where a guy drives, has a pretty good shot from about 12 feet (with a big man underneath for a potential rebound), instead decides to rifle a fancy pass, into traffic, to the big man...turnover

Getting Cornbread Maxwell…

Getting Cornbread Maxwell flashbacks...

Watching the game, it was…

Watching the game, it was hard to understand how IL ever manages to lose!

Also, glad to see you observe that Eli is under 6 foot, a poster absorbed some ridicule for saying that a while back, with other posters insisting that he is at least 6 foot 2...

From now on play Houstan at…

From now on play Houstan at the 4, use Moussa and/or Bufkin, maybe TWIII at the 3

I just don't understand how…

I just don't understand how people can think that Dickinson is not an NBA player.  Yeah, I get that the NBA style has moved away from the post up.  But he is 7 foot 1, unstoppable down low, is developing his right hand, now is adding decent three point shooting, is showing an accurate mid-range jumper, is a really good passer.  Sure he won't be a lock-down defender, but, not an NBA player?  That's just crazy.

We need shooters on this…

We need shooters on this roster--period.  Of course, it is better if they are also great athletes.  That is what is generally supposed to happen when you recruit 5 star wings, but ours seem to not be able to shoot, or not great athletes, or both.

If you have to recruit a 3 star or a 4 star who is adequate on defense, and can just stand in the corner, and provide spacing by basically being automatic on open 3s, then recruit the 3 star.

It seems that the recruiting playbook has shifted markedly from specific basketball skills, to athleticism.  If we can't get both, maybe we need more of a mix.

The coaching staff whiffed…

The coaching staff whiffed on the PNR coverage against Sparty. Then it nearly lost to winless NW, by playing its best player, leading scorer, and really, only threat on offense, only 23 minutes, even though he only had two fouls the whole game.

Not so sure it is the 'coaching staff' that is limited by the talent of its players, rather than the other way around.  Individual players and the team always progressed throughout the season under Beilein.  Not sure we can assume the same under this staff.

If Juwan were a baseball…

If Juwan were a baseball manager, he would only pitch his best relief pitcher in the 9th inning...and even then only if his team had a lead.

If Juwan were a football coach, he would punt on fourth down every time, even in opponents territory, unless a near-certain field goal attempt was available.

Facts, logic, statistical probability, reason?  Nope, gotta follow "the book"...

We have 3 freshman former…

We have 3 freshman former McDonalds All Americans on the roster but Bryce McGowens was the best freshman on the floor tonight, by far, with 24 points.  Diabate may be better eventually, but 6 points and 2 turnovers.  Houstan...1 for 7 from the floor.  Bufkin, 0 for 3 from the floor, and an astounding +/- of -16 in 13 minutes on the floor.  I mean, young or not, if you are a McDonalds All American, you should be able to at least hold your own at home, against the worst team in the Big Ten.

I assume that Juwan is not…

I assume that Juwan is not lacking in brainpower, since he attended Michigan...but there is only one word to describe his auto-benching of Dickinson--STUPID!

Juwan ensured that his team would be without its best player for nearly 15 minutes of the first half, and as a result M entered the half trailing by 7 points.  Dickinson finished the game with...2 fouls!

This, in a must win game.  If you are already on the bubble and lose at home to winlesss-in-the-Big-Ten Nebraska, you can kiss any tournament dreams goodbye.

You GUARANTEE that you will be without your best player for 15 minutes just to insure against the slight chance that he might foul out.  Stupid!!

It just seems strange to see…

It just seems strange to see you refer to Houstan as an 'extremely limited athlete' when he is a 5 star, top 12 in nation type recruit.  Also, as far as the eye test, while he is admittedly not great yet on defense, it is no disgrace for a guy his size to not be too effective at guarding the 3 spot, and he also shows some promise in the mid-range game and occasional forays to the hoop.  I would describe him as a 'pretty good, but not elite' athlete.

Well,  Sparty had no answer…

Well,  Sparty had no answer for Ryan Young, who put up 18 and 8 on them.  What are they going to do with Hunter??

Regarding Houstan, Hummel…

Regarding Houstan, Hummel commented that he really liked the way that Juwan was using him at the 4, and said that if he can guard the 4, that makes him so much better on offense as well.  This is dead on!  (Although I've never really understood why a guy can't play one position, say, the 3, on offense, and guard another guy, say, the 4, on defense...in this case I would consider having Moussa guard the 3 but play the 4 when we have the ball, and Houstan, vice versa)

Hilarious sequence where, I…

Hilarious sequence where, I think with the shot clock running down, Frankie threw a shot over the backboard.  The announcers then went off on how he had hit the shot clock.  Later, right before intermission, when someone else did the same thing, one of them said something like, "Wow, not often you see a team hit the shot clock TWICE in one half, and still lead by 20!"

I actually enjoyed watching…

I actually enjoyed watching the game, though it was an ugly game.  Loved the fight that M showed.  Loved watching Frankie and Kobe (why don't they play more?), and especially Jace.  That play where he dove to the floor and threw a bounce pass to Jones for the three was one of the best plays you will ever want to see, plus he got a block on Kofi!   More time for Jace, I would play him over Williams and Houstan at this point.  Moussa is going to be really good, but is just so young, so we have to settle for the flashes for now.  I felt badly for Faulds, he battles so hard and finally got a chance, but was really just overmatched.

Not complaining, the coaches…

Not complaining, the coaches did a great job this year, and it happens, but Georgia had a great game plan and we got out-coached in this game.

When they had the ball, Georgia took away our edge rushers with screen passes, getting the ball out quickly to their playmakers.  They figured out how to get mismatches with their tight ends and running backs, for big chunk passing plays.  The second half was better, but we never really adjusted.  Having a quarterback who could hurt us with his legs also was key.

After getting punched in the mouth on the first drive, Harbaugh probably should not have gone for it on the second drive on 4th and 4 on about their 40.  A punt could have pinned them, and set up a field position battle that might have kept us close until we started to play better.  To me, four yards was too much, and perhaps showed premature desperation.  Georgia took it right down the short-ish field for their second score.

When WE had the ball, somehow we could NOT create mismatches or negate the strengths of the Dawgs defense.  Every time we tried that screen pass that worked so well against OSU and Iowa, they were ready for it.

Now, the recruiting disparity is obvious.  Still, I did not expect us to get dominated by their defense.  We have the 'best offensive line in the nation' three very good running backs, excellent tight ends, a developing group of receivers...everything except a fleet quarterback.

Likewise, strictly from a talent perspective, our defense should not have been dominated by their offense.  We have the best pass rushing pair in the nation, and all of the other position groups are at least solid.  To me, this was the 'Georgia screen pass and wheel route' version of the 'OSU slant route' evisceration.

Again, it happens, and Georgia DOES have a ludicrous collection of athletes but their game plan was much better yesterday.

You could chalk it up to a…

You could chalk it up to a couple of guys just getting crazy hot...but then again, someone seems to have a career game against us every game, so...maybe our defense just isn't all that good?

12 players scoring, good to…

12 players scoring, good to see Kobe and Zeb get some run.

Jones also a good game, let's see if they can repeat it against better competition.

So far this year, hitting 3s at a decent clip=win, clanging them=loss.

Great writing, hilarious.

Great writing, hilarious.

Matt--agree, we have only…

Matt--agree, we have only one guy who can defend shot creators--Moussa.  Is there any reason why Moussa could not defend the 3 spot, and have Caleb defend the 4 spot?  Then they could flip that on offense.

Also, playing Zeb more cannot hurt.  Or, just play a zone??

The question is, why not…

The question is, why not this year?  On a team that can't shoot, Barnes, Tschetter, never see the floor.  Bufkin only occasionally...

You can't play 4 on 5 when…

You can't play 4 on 5 when you have the ball, but that's what it is with Jones out there, defense giving him a 10-foot cushion, daring him to shoot.  It's not like Zavier who could at least make up for it with his defense, great passing, and drives.

If Brandon is pump-faking and TW5 is not on a rare hot streak, it becomes 3 on 5.

Play Bufkin, Zeb, even Tschetter--anyone who can hit a three.

What is Juwan thinking playing Jones all those minutes??  I know Frankie can't shoot either, but at least he has some quickness and leaping and can give you some on the ball pressure.

Well, there's the formula:…

Well, there's the formula: pack the paint and dare anyone but Eli and Houstan to shoot.  All the traffic causes Hunter turnovers, and no one makes you pay with the outside shot.

No one on this team can create their own shot.  Working inside out is the solution, but then you have to have shooters, and we don't, or at least they aren't playing.

TW5 and Johns go 0-for 2 from the field, combined.  A one game fluke against Nebraska.  The bench only gets 31 minutes of action.

Jones cannot be on the floor, period.  What is Juwan thinking??  You can't play 4 on 5 when you have the ball, and it's not like he is all that good defensively, either.  His forays to the hoop do not translate against better athletes.

With all its small…

With all its small conference transfers, playing Minnesota is like playing a MAC-level team, except with no cohesiveness because everyone is new.  Nebraska, but with less talent?  I mean, they even made MSU look good!

Hard to imagine that this…

Hard to imagine that this Minnesota team can win at Crisler.  We have a size advantage and likely, a shooting advantage.

Jones would be a real stud…

Jones would be a real stud...if he were 6'10!  Seems as if all he really does well is rebounding and shooting the floater.  I'd move him to like, 8th or 9th man, give the minutes to Frankie (quickness, on the ball pressure), Zeb (length and defense), or Kobe (length and shooting?).

Does anyone redshirt anymore…

Does anyone redshirt anymore?  Because it sure looks like Barnes and Tschetter are redshirting.

Nebraska was awful.  As was…

Nebraska was awful.  As was pointed out on the broadcast, it looked like a pickup game (more accurately like Juwan took his team over to the IM building to challenge the best team there).

So, a great way to kick off the Big Ten season, but may not tell a whole lot about how M will fare against a real team.  It does show the potential, though.

Houstan's length created…

Houstan's length created havoc in the press.  He still hasn't shown that he can guard half court.

Stay up on their just a…

Stay up on their just a shooters, press the daylights out of them, box out, hope that we can hit a few shots.

6-3 Michigan (field goals,…

6-3 Michigan (field goals, that is).  M 18-9

(Seriously, though, M will probably score at least 1 touchdown)

Start Frankie and give him…

Start Frankie and give him more minutes, keep using that press, add the shot blocking and athleticism of Mousa, aka young Hakeem (and by extension, less Johns)...now you are starting to form an identity!  Won't shoot this well from deep every game, but no coincidence that once you get a threat of someone who can take you off the dribble, the court opens up.  Also, the pressure D creates easy buckets.

Frankie is electric!  Doesn…

Frankie is electric!  Doesn't really know what he is doing yet, can't shoot a lick, but great athleticism, can get us easy baskets.  Got into the lane for a layup, had a steal for a dunk, these are the kinds of easy hoops we have been lacking.  Plus, the threat of him getting to the rim opens up the floor.  Clearly a better choice than Jones.

Houstan  much better, he and others hit a few threes and, what do you know, Hunter starts to get some scores in the lane.  Zeb got a few minutes, looked lost out there, still too soon to draw a firm conclusion, but would not be surprised if he transfers, with Dug coming in next year.

Now let's see if Juwan reads the message boards, figures out that Frankie has to get most of the point guard minutes...

We have given up more than…

We have given up more than 18 points three times all year, once when MSU caught us off guard by using tempo, against Nebraska, which used an excessive amount of trickery, and the other time to the 'greatest offense in history.'  None of these probably apply today...

17 points should be enough.  Aidan and Ojabo screaming off the edges against tackles that can't block, a quarterback who can't throw, and receivers who can't create separation?  That leaves Iowa to try to run against a stacked box.

Unless we match our season's turnover total, in one game, it's hard to see a plausible window for Iowa to score enough to keep up.

At least Juwan started…

At least Juwan started Moussa.  Now bench Jones, stop playing Johns entirely, start playing the freshmen...all of them, plus Zeb.

Johns double-clutched every…

Johns double-clutched every single time that he was open behind the line, even on the one that he eventually took and made.  Caleb hit a couple early then did nothing the rest of the game.

May not be Jones' fault but...he is clearly not a point guard, and probably not a shooter either, he is not particularly big, so where do you play him?  it just looks like his athleticism and talent does not translate well to a higher level.

No pressure, lots of cushion…

No pressure, lots of cushion?  A good day to flip it to Corum or Edwards out of the backfield and let them operate in space?  Or hit the tight ends off of a play action?

Absolutely need to see more…

Absolutely need to see more Frankie, for now and the future.

But then, it is not just about individual talent, but about chemistry, and if you have Frankie out there it just makes the need for shooting all the more urgent (Jones isn't great from deep, but probably still better than Frankie).  Eli can play off the ball, but somebody at the 3 or 4 spot has to step up and hit threes, or at least stand in the corner and present enough of a threat to provide spacing.

Football school again??
