Soccer penalty shootout…

Soccer penalty shootout format, but with 2-point conversions instead. i.e. each team gets 5 chances to go for 2 (teams alternating attempts), winner has the most conversions out of 5. You can cut short if the outcome is determined before all 5 are played. If still tied after 5, then each team goes for 2 until one team converts and the other doesn't.

Aiden showing up in KFaTAotW…

Aiden showing up in KFaTAotW every week except a blowout NIU game has to be a record, right? Award this man the Heisman!

If both the #1 and #2 WR …

If both the #1 and #2 WR (counting from outside) are considered "on the line", then the formation is legal.  The #2 WR is then covered, and he actually barely makes it to 3 yards past the LOS (so is borderline for illegal man downfield) at the time the pass is thrown. Arguably, that's legal if #1 was lined up on the line.

However, the #1 and #3 WR are clearly off the line of scrimmage by the same amount while the #2 WR is lined up basically in the neutral zone.

How much consensus is there…

How much consensus is there that the play (3Q, 1st & 10, O48) is an arc read RPO that Cade's missing? i.e. are you 99% right or maybe 75% right?

I'm about as newb as it comes, but to me, it looks like Henning is not looking to receive, and is trying to find who to block and there's an OLB threatening his slant. Is the throw supposed to happen right away before Henning passes behind the OLB? or after?

About Wilson, I meant to…

About Wilson, I meant to point out that opposing DBs can tell this is a guy that doesn't want to block, and so if Wilson is covered by the formation, then the DB responsible for him can just leave him alone and join the run game, knowing that it won't be a screen, and even if it were a screen, Wilson's likely to whiff his block.

There's too many men in the backfield on the last image

The X receiver is supposed to be on the line (and covered by the Z receiver) making it an unbalanced formation.

There was one play where Wilson was the covered receiver! This guy is the most averse to blocking on the team, why is he covered? He's not going to block!

Thanks for this! I was wondering why this was such a "trick play". One question--in a typical game, backfield motion (1 guy in motion, everybody else is set) is common, yet formation shifts (everybody unsets, and then sets for the required second) are incredibly uncommon. Why don't we see as many formation shifts like this to confuse the defense?

From the image with the article, it looks like Isaiah Livers got new tattoos on the fronts of his thighs. Can anybody read chinese? I can tell the left (his right thigh) character is "dream", but what's the other character?

That's my read of the picture as well. Think of it as just a 16 team tournament where the first round has 5 byes (and thus 5 fewer teams). With the added complication that the second round is re-seeded based on rank.

Odd that the article says 15 games, when this results in 10 games (3 dec-1 games, and then a 8 team tournament).

But then the quote "Nobody would play 16 games" doesn't make any sense, unless he assumes the winners of the first-round dec 1 games won't make the championship.

DOWNTOWN Clay Davis?…

DOWNTOWN Clay Davis? SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIT

Was the bubble screen to DPJ…

Was the bubble screen to DPJ an pre-snap read RPO? The line look to be run blocking and there is a fake handoff to the RB, but Shea doesn't seem to be selling that fake very much.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn3b-6_DgcM

I'm cautiously optimistic that this a correctly-executed RPO and Shea's seeing the safety alignment being so far off and that there's only 2 defenders on 3 receivers there and making the bubble the right read.

The rule is you must have at…

The rule is you must have at least 7 players on the line of scrimmage, and of those players on the line of scrimmage, only the outermost players can go downfield on a pass play. In this play, Nico is the outermost, and DPJ is on the line "covered up" by Nico, making DPJ ineligible. DPJ should have moved back to be in the backfield (or indicated to the line judge that he intends to be), because there were only 3 players on the backfield and 8 players on the line.

I'm surprised to see so many against it.

You get fouled on a made shot, the and-1 free throw remains the same

You get fouled on a missed 2 pointer, you get 1 free throw worth 2 points instead of 2 free throws worth 1 each.

You get fouled on a missed 3-pointer, you get 1 free throw worth 3 points instead of 3 free throws worth 1 each.

All it changes is it increases variance, but long term expected value should remain the same. But since the changed rule is only in effect in the first 46 minutes of the game (last 2 minutes + OT go back to traditional rules), the increased variance hopefully evens out somewhat. If this speeds up the game, it's worth it.

I appreciate these deeper…

I appreciate these deeper looks into specific plays but I sometimes get confused by the descriptions, having never played organized football before.

Can you help a football noob understand terminology? In the first play (counter trey), which side is the frontside, and which side is the backside? Is it the same for offense and defense?

My guess was that the frontside would be playside, the side where the pulling guard and tackle are going. i.e. the offense's right side in this particular case. The backside would be the leftside that they vacated. This seems to match the first paragraph description:

Then they swing two blockers from the backside

But then the second paragraph begins

So Michigan is attacking the frontside, Wisconsin is attacking the backside and motioning to the frontside

And now i'm all confused about how to parse this as it seems to have flipped which side is front and back. The slot motioned offensive right to left, so now the left side is the frontside?

That last play (15)-- the…

That last play (15)-- the corners to the bottom of the screen are lined up 10 and 12 yards off of the receivers :( Am I missing something here? I hope at some point they add the opportunity to audible to a hot read here. Are quarterbacks taught to look at the entire field on called zone reads? or is he so focused on the relevant players to the play call?

Also, don't really understand the play call to run a zone read here. The previous play was an incomplete pass so the clock is stopped, there's 8 seconds left with 1 timeout left so it looks like they wanted to run a 'safe' play, call a timeout and kick a field goal? I'd much prefer more aggressiveness here as you're already looking at a 43 yarder which is makeable.

I'm not sure on alignment,…

I'm not sure on alignment, but I counted 5* times in the game we lined up with a covered slot. All 5 times we ran the ball. 4 times the covered up slot released downfield into a DB playing 7 yards off and backpedaling. That covered slot is an ineligible receiver--him releasing downfield is a flag if it's a pass play. So I'm not sure why the DB would play so far off a covered up slot. It seems to me if you (as the DB) recognize your man is covered up, you want to play much closer to the LOS and be thinking run, because your man is not eligible to receive downfield (yes, he can still receive in the backfield, so you need to be aware of that)

*there was a 6th time where there were 8 men on the line, so it's possible the outside receiver was meant to be off the line but didn't line up properly.
